***the Official Miami Dolphins 2008-2009 Thread***

Recommended Posts

We are totally winning more games this year than last year. Book it!As the season approaches, I will offer more serious commentary. For now, let me say that I am enjoying Bill Parcells gestapo tactics.....especially flying in a famous PR guy to teach the players to handle the press in a Parcells way. Gold.

The Dolphins don't deserve an official thread.
God doesn't deserve a whole forum section, but he's got one. At least the Dolphins exist.I'm sorry, that was uncalled for. Keep the Phin's bashing outta here, or at least confined to the Phin's fans.

spoken like a bandwagoning slut. It would take a lot more than one horrible season to get me to give up on the Fins.So what are everyone's thoughts on the QB "battle" (using that term loosely).....do the safe thing and start off the season with McCown or let a young guy take a shot.

I was going to write that yesterday but I got sidetracked picking on Brvhrt.Parcells is a vetern's coach, and as much as he says that he isn't running things, I have very little doubts that he is very hands on, so I think McCown gets the nod unless he's horrible and Beck is a phenom.

Beck should be the starter. I'm still someone who thinks he did a good job with what he had last year.Starting McCown won't get them anywhere...they should be thinking about their future. No matter who starts, McCown should be the back up.

Few thoughts...I'm sick of the Jason Taylor drama. If he's really done after this year, then why not trade him and get anything at all for him? Even a fourth rounder is better than nothing. He's really of no use to us since we're not going to turn it around in one year. If he has a great year, Miami wins 4 games, and then he calls it quits how does that help us at all?Let Beck have another go at it. Again, we're not winning the SB this year so let the kid take his licks. But Mex is right, Parcells is a veteran guy and even though it's not ultimately his choice, I wouldn't be surprised if Beck ends up the backup. I don't know if I posted in this thread at all last season, but that's probably because I was trying to convince myself it never really happened.

Did you watch the games last year? He was terrible. Don't get me wrong, I don't put it all on him, but think back to that Buffalo game on the road. First pass in the flats, pick 6. He fumbled a snap, the ball slipped out of his hands. 10th grade shit. He needs to improve. I agree that McCown isnt the future, but with a solid line and a good scheme, even a 6th rounder can be a hall of famer. Hence this years draft.

I never get tired of seeing that, but I digress. A 4th rounder is like giving him away so it's better to keep him, let him impact some games, which is worth a win or two. Let him show some of the younger guys how its done. Half of the 4th rounders don't even make the teams, so better to keep him. I think Beck should get the PT. I prefer a guy learn on the job, but if he's awful, then he's awful

Am I the only one who wants to see Henne start? I see zero in Beck and he is already 32 years old or something because of his mormon mission. And McCown is just a stop gap.

26 I think, but let me ask you this, and I only ask because I know you're a sports guy, go to lots of local sporting events, but also a law student and full time hen pecked hubby, poker player and son to a jewish mother, so I know your sports viewing time is rather limited. Have you ever watched Henne play? I've watched a fair amount of Michigan games over the past 4 years and I never once thought that he was a top tier QB and never pined for him to QB my team. He's gritty gutty, a games, but doesn't throw a pretty ball and inaccurate as hell, if my memory serves me. He would shine when his superior receivers would toast bad corners on deep balls, but I just never saw much. They were a running team first. You're brighter than that, so I won't say that you shouldn't get hung up on the fact that he's a Michigan QB and so was Brady. I just think he's a product of a major college program and a game manager at best, but not even at the highest level. His record against top tier teams wasn't great. Basically, I didn't like the pic. I hope I eat my words.

You would surprised (maybe negatively) how much sports I manage to squeeze in.....I was impressed by anyone who could start from day one at Michigan.I did see him play a bit. I always felt like he was mis-managed....Lloyd Carr and his staff just did a terrible job calling games.Yes, his record against the Buckeyes is a concern but frankly, Ohio State always had the better team. And he did shred the Gators in his last game. Just shredded them.Obviously, I dont like him just because of Brady. I just saw nothing in Beck (not even flashes of ability) and I know what we have in McCown (nothing special). I will admit I wanted Brohm over Henne. (Unlike most, I thought Matt Ryan was the 3rd best QB in the draft....I just dont see it with him). I liked Brohm best, then Henne, then Ryan. (I never say Flacco play....saw the others multiple times).Anyway, I like henne because he has an NFL arm and because he handled the crushing criticism/expectations at Michigan pretty darn well. Is he ideal? Nah. Is he a better long term option than Beck? I think so but I am willing to be proven wrong. Is he a better long term option than McCown? definitely.

I don't think he gives a shit about showing the younger guys anything. Seems like he either wants to win now or be a movie star. And I still don't think one or two wins really matters this season. It just sucks, I've always been a huge fan of his.

I would wait until the season starts and someone has a pass rusher get hurt. Then pounce and try and get at least a 3rd rounder.fwiw, I am still a huge fan. Taylor has been a great competitor for this franchise. Even last year, he gave it everything he had. And lots of veterans would have just gone through the motions in last years situation. He deserves to be a little selfish now and not want to rebuild in his career twilight. stupid parcells probably could have gotten a late 2nd rounder from the Jags if he had not been so greedy. That is where I put my blame.

Well, since I thought Beck was the 2nd best QB (after Trent Edwards) in last years draft class, that's why I think they should at least give him this season to see what he can do.(Yes, I had Russell #3 and Quinn #4)

yeah, I kind of agree. But what does make me laugh is all of these football players want to go out and act, yet they buy the hype and fail to realize that the only reason producers want them now is because they are tapping into the NFLs huge fan base, and once these players retire, the producers won't want them anymore. But somehow, the players can't seem to fathom that. They don't realize that 99% of them are not great marketing vehicles when they aren't playing football, yet they all threaten to quit football to act.

Henne is tall, has good vision, a strong arm and can throw a good deep ball into some fairly narrow spots. He could use some work on tight throws across the middle which have been problematic for him, but a big part of Michigan's offense was throwing to the TE so he isn't horrible at it.

Yeah, I'm still a fan of what he does on the field. It just frustrates me to see him now more focused on Hollywood than football.

But he can't do anything under pressure. No anticipation, he can't see what's happening before it happens (throws too late too much because of it). He doesn't move much either in the pocket...not even move a step to the side to avoid the rush.He has a strong arm, yes. That's about the best compliment I can give him.

We expect too much of our players. Is he really more focused on Hollywood? All he did was appear on a show. He was back well before traning camp (not that he needs training camp). He is entitled to a life. And even if he is more focused on Hollywood....so what? Athletes are people too and they need to prepare for career changes just like the rest of us. All he did was lay the groundwork for a TV position in football or maybe something with even more substance. I applaud him for having the brains to prepare for life after football instead of pulling an MC Hammer like so many athletes do once the game is behind them. Also, I dont think any fins fan on this forum honestly thinks that Taylor wont be the best player of the field for the dolphins this year (assuming he plays). That alone makes this argument moot.

I do believe that Taylor won't be distracted once he steps on the field. It's so much different these days than it used to be. Back in the day, guys used camp to get into shape. Nowadays, most players work out all year round, use state of the art techniques to get in shape, watch tape on their own, etc. I couldn't care less about OTAs.Taylor has been in the league long enough to not need much to be game ready, a la Strahan last year. I think coaches today over prepare. I know the game is complex, but 17 hour days, every day for the whole season is ridiculous. You can only watch so much film and know so much. (Belichek joke here) Ultimately, football is football. Line up, beat your man, make a play.

Let Henne sit a year. Roookie QB's are -EV.Believe me I know. We have had more QB's start than titles in Ron's gay men porn collection.

I would be ok with him sitting for a year. But if they do that, then they need to find out this year what they have in John Beck. The only scenario I hate is going with McCown. We are not going from 1-15 to the playoffs so there is no point in wasting time with a journeyman QB. He should only play if they dont want to push Henne in right away AND Beck is a nightmare.

Don't get me wrong, I'm not against him setting himself up for life after football. If you have a chance to make more money in Hollywood, go for it. I just got the impression from what he said during Dancing With the Stars that the bright lights caught his eye and all his comments about still being committed to football and not being concerned about his situation in Miami were contrived. I'm just naive and old-fashioned when it comes to stuff like this, and since the Dancing with the Stars/Bill Parcells drama there's been a lot of other stuff for him to deal with.

looks like Taylor has zero interest in going to Green Bay. I think Miami missed their window to trade Taylor.....they wanted too much for him during the draft....and now they are "stuck" with him. at least he will be a good mentor to the two new DE's the fins drafted.
