I Called In Sick Today

Recommended Posts

Just you wait, baby cakes. I appreciate you always wanting to be fresh to death, but house stuff is never ending and all encompassing. Just depends on if you plan on staying in this place for a while

So excited for you. Living alone for now, right?

and after 3 days, he is risen!

If you are paying $20 for a haircut, I imagine people assume you did it yourself anyway.

Pocket change cost me my first and only black girlfriend.   It was in the middle of a roaring poker boom and I was flush in ways most men don't even bother dreaming of. Money, it was like dirt to me

Nah, I get it. Already I’m looking around at stuff I need to do and that list just keeps growing. Throw in it’s an older house and I know there will be a lot of unexpected expenses.

Can’t rmemeber if I mentioned it or not but I’m putting in a small gym area in the 3 seasons porch. The plan is to use it, obv, but at least I can cancel my gym membership I’ve been paying for years and hardly ever using and use that to pay for shit. Immediate plans is a squat rack/pulldown machine and then some room for plyo/body weight stuff. “Won’t it get cold in the winter?” Yes, which is why I’ll put up insulation panels and insulated curtains plus a space heater for the winter.

I’ve got a buddy moving in to live in the basement. He says he’s only planning on staying short term until he can afford a house but I imagine it will be at least a year based on his income and spending habits. He’s currently living with his parents and asked if he could live with me and so I’m like sure. He’ll be a big help with Mack and since he’s a commercial pilot he’s gone a lot and most weekends since he’s low man at work.

You need a project spreadsheet. List expense descriptions, amounts, and priority. All that info informs the sequencing of everything. I watched my girlfriend screw up her sequencing on her new place, and it was so painful. Like, Dumb and Dumber “just picked up some essentials” style shopping, and then later finding out that she needs to wait on something much more important.

It hurts a little that you think you need to tell me that.

Started it about a month ago and it’s been super helpful in really deciding between needs and wants, especially. Also, since I started it before I really needed a lot of this stuff I’ve been able to come in way under budget by being able to take my time looking for sales and the like.

I am developing a like of excel, but a project spreadsheets? You guys are great.

We made multiple lists and priced out stuff, but not a spreadsheet. If someone makes one, i’d love to see it.

Also of note, we went over budget

How does an insulation panel work on an outdoor patio?

Will your equipment get beaten down by the weather, rust, etc?

The room has glass windows so shouldn’t get hit by any weather. The foam insulation panels will just fit into the window frames to cover the glass. And then the curtains will cover them up, too. Throw a space heater on a smart plug and turn it on 30 minutes before the workout and should be golden.

Oh, I didn’t realize it was a covered 4 wall room. I was thinking it was the outside deck

Nice.

Exercise equipment is expensive and rarely on sale. You’re better at this stuff than I am, but scour Craigslist and Facebook market, etc.

Yeah, I got those bow flex dumbbells a few years ago at my old job when they would give us $300/yr for fitness stuff (same with a bench), I got a 300 lb Olympic weight set + bar from sears during some recent sale for $200 with $150 back in sears bucks which I’ve then been using to buy stuff for the house on my list, got a power cage from amazon for $300. Wasn’t on sale or anything but I’ve been looking at Craigslist and such and that’s about as good of a price as you can get, got some of the pull down accessories during a recent eBay sale, some nice heavy rubber mats from a local store that just happened to have them on sale when I was looking. I should be good to go for a bit. I saw plans for a plyo box that is basically 3 different heights that I’ll build once I get the circular saw my sister bought me. Should be a legit setup once it all gets here.

I think the best thing you could get for your gym is a good elliptical, to go bananas on before you weight lifting. People will talk shit, but it's the best option for low impact cardio (besides swimming, but I don't imagine you have the option to do laps), and low impact is important as you age (and weigh more).

Essay, they are straight up playing you. If you continue to take this shit, they will continue to shit on you. If you're not prepared to walk away from the firm (or make that threat credible), they have no reason to advance you. Why would they pay someone to do level 3 shit, if they can pay them level 2 for the same work? You need to create leverage or develop a skat fetish.

Once I get everything in there I was going to see if I could fit an elliptical. I mean, i can for sure fit one in there but i would kinda like to keep some of the room open for it's stated purpose of a 3 seasons porch in the summer. I guess I could just move the elliptical out during the summer when I'd rather take my dog for a run or walk than do indoor cardio anyways.

But, really feels like a "want" rather than a need at the moment. Maybe if I see a super good deal on craigslist or something.

I was the biggest running evangelist there was throughout my 20s, probably because I was super lucky and never really got hurt. But slowly I started to have knee soreness and shit.

My partner stopped running because we were afraid it was going to make xer feet unattractive. Xe bought an Arc elliptical like a year and a half ago and never looked back. I made fun of it until a few months ago, and now I'm fully on board. They are dope, especially for those into footplay.

I don't think running is a practical option in the twin cities, unless your gym has a track. You really have to be a maniac to street run in Minnesota in November, let alone January.

i have to agree with you, and i am prepared to walk away, but not until next february when i get my annual bonus- which is worth waiting to get. i will begin applying to other firms january 1 no matter what happens with this. the only question is how selective will i be. every year at least one person leaves the company on march 1 after the annual bonus hits the bank account, and i want to be that person next year.

It's time to start your own shop. Next round of meetings you have with the trust beneficries, you offer them greater access to the trust funds, if they agree to adopt you as their personal lawyers (and you know these trust fund jerk offs are going to have legal troubles).

Then when you jump ship and start Essay, Terranova, Beans and Coen Associates, you'll have a nice base of clients to build your firm from.

Now, trail running is an option I would consider. I like to trail run in a snowy and cold climates in the middle of winter, but that's a lot lower impact and a lot less dangerous than icy concrete.

mcgee that would be highly unethical, and therefore i would never even consider it (wink).

running outside is dangerous business. look what happened to this poor girl in iowa. i don't want that to happen to my napa.

Napa isn't running hopped up on weed and horse tranqs, he's going to feel the cold more than you

for hank's benefit here's a bunch of bullshit

IF

you don't want to jump ship, there's a cast you might want to check out. I'm not advocating one way or the other as I think staying or going could both be viable options in your position. However, your situation does remind me of one I've been in where I'm doing the job of someone a rung or two higher than me and feeling like I'm being take advantage/taken for granted/getting pissed on and told it's raining. One example is where the company had posted with a recruiter for another position on my team for a salary 15% or so above mine. I told them I would be better off quitting and then applying as an external candidate. That, among numbers analysis of standard merit increases for someone hired at the external minimum vs. my internal promotion maximum resulted in a 20% pay "adjustment." But I had also intentional gotten myself in front of some Chief and Director level execs, both in work and non-work related contexts, prior to dropping my balls on the table.

If there is one piece of manager tools guidance that fundamentally altered my perspective on managing my career it's this one. The podcast is titled "solution to a stalled technical career." While they use IT professionals as their example animal, it is applicable to ANY field that requires a fairly extensive depth of specialized knowledge. In fact, they specifically mention lawyers as well. The short version is: technical expertise and such plays a much smaller role than most people realize in advancing their position once you get past entry level stages. there are, fundamentally, 3 types of power in the office: expertise power, role power, and relationship power. role power, we all know. it's the authority granted to you by the organization giving you a title and position in the org chart. expertise power is your knowledge (certs, cont. ed. hours etc) of your field. relationship power is your influence within your organization and it is how you really get things done. without promotion/demotion your role power won't change. changing expertise power in a short time doesn't really happen and, I would argue, you can only get so many certs or hours of training before you start seeing diminished returns. However, developing new and/or stronger relationships in your organization can yield some pretty stunning results and in pretty short order. As does creating relationships outside the organization.

Keep in mind that jumping ship might be a quick fix for this specific situation, it's not a viable long term career strategy. I think as time goes on, each move is going to increasingly approach lateral.

PM me your email address and I'll send you a (malware laden) pdf with the shownotes if you'd rather read than listen.

if you are 99% on leaving I would say ask for specific, actionable feedback on what it's going to take to get her to put in the request as a way of re-raising her bluff raise. and/or I would absolutely convey the attitude of "you don't want to work here" to the prospective recruit. saving her from a shitty situation might pay dividends to you professionally (wink wink bob's your uncle say no more) down the line.

Hey can you unquote that for my lawyer Uncle hanky. I don’t need him getting in trouble while I have lawsuits pending.

Edit: Love you. Also, there's a indoor pistol/rifle range a block away from my new place. Pretty sure the actual range is underground, which is nice.
