I'm going to get Daniel's book soon, just wondering what other books people recommend?I might get Doyle's book, but I don't know. I was going to join his site and upload the minimum for the book, until I seen his site switched to the Prima Network. I'd rather eat my prostate than play there again.I'm leaning towards Ace on the River, by the The Great Jew, Barry.I don't know what else.. seen a book by Phil Gordon with Lederer tips. Yea, if I want to lose, this would be a good book.Any tips? I've read Helmuth's book, texas holdem for dummies 1 and 2.. that's about it.

I haven't read Ace on The River. but this is a good list to start. I'm not sure how new you are to poker, but I'd also read Phil Gordon's Little Green Book. Yes, I know, Phil is considered a douche by many, but I still think you'd be better served reading that book than anything written by that other Phil. Once you get through those, I'm sure a lot of people would also recommend Sklansky's Theory of Poker and Small Stakes Hold 'em: Winning Big with Expert Play, by Ed Miller, David Sklansky, and Mason Malmuth. HOH is amazing.

If you are more of a beginner, I would look at Sklansky's Theory of Poker (though I do get annoyed at the amount of Razz examples he uses) and I'd follow that with the Lee Jones book on low limit hold'em (or one of Lou Kreiger's books). Get some good fundamentals going first. Most players these days are reading advanced no limit strategy without good fundamentals and their game ends up being disjointed.Following this and fair bit of experience, take a look at Hold'em Poker for Advanced Players (Sklansky et al). Once you've got a grasp of the concepts and the game and played a lot more, move into the super system books. The first super system is a terrific book for no limit hold'em and seven card stud. For limit hold'em it gives you a solid game plan without being revolutionary. But in 1978 (when it was written), I'd say that semi-bluffs and pot odds were probably widely unknown concepts so your game wouldn't have needed to be very good to win against most opponents. But a player who has read Hold'em Poker for Advanced Players and had a good grasp and application of all its concepts would probably beat a player groomed on the limit hold'em chapter in the super system. The ace-to-five draw lowball is redundent, as is the hi lo chapter and draw poker chapter. The second super system is good for pot limit omaha and absolutely stunning for limit hold'em. I would say that if you read the standard set of poker books about limit hold'em, Jennifer Harmon's limit hold'em chapter in super system 2 helps you put it all together so that you can tackle mid limit games and higher. It describes how to play cunning, yet solid poker without getting too fancy, which is basically what's required in limit hold'em. The no limit chapter in this book is surprising disappointing (due to the fact that it doesn't advance much on the first super system) and is filled with promotion for Doyle's Room. Chapters relating to games like triple draw lowball and seven card hi/lo are very good, but the games are rarely spread and low and mid limits, even in vegas.I also strongly recommend According to Doyle, later retitled Poker Wisdom from a Champion. As for Ace on the River, I think it is an excellent book, but certainly not for beginner or even intermediate players. If you have actually played a lot of poker and befriended lots of people in the poker room, etc... then you'll have a full appreciation of this book and if you have a good game, it'll probably help fine tune it a bit. But it's more of a reflection on playing poker and a terrific discussion of topics rarely raised in other books - topics mainly pertaining to being heavily involved in poker for a living and pitfalls to avoid (eg... lending money, lifestyle issues associated with high limit gambling - namely drugs, bankroll management and even sex and having a sex life). These are really important issues and can ultimately make the difference between you being a good life long winner and player on a collision cause with disaster if you are a good experienced player. However, you really need to have played a lot of poker - home games and casino - to fully appreciate this one. Good luck.

uh........shoudn't this thread be in the "Poker Books" section???? :club:
No, no one *ever* posts/looks in there. It's a legitimate poker-based question, and just fine for general imho.1. ) Avoid anything Tom McEvoy has ever written. It was -EV 10 years ago and a complete embarassment in our modern age, especially online.2. ) There's a NLHE book by Ken Warren for Hold Em cash games that is an excellent, excellent read that you can usually find in Borders. It's not the best book out there, but it is one that most players don't automatically put on a list that has some nice stuff in it. 3. ) If you have the cash, there is 0 excuse for not havnig all 3 HOH's, and SS1 and SS2 on your bookshelf. Ditto for Skalansky's TOP and Barry Greenstein's Ace on the River.

lol. now that you mention it, I myself have never looked or posted in the poker books section!
You just gave me a great idea!ATTENTION MODSInstead of "Banning people" outright, couldn't we just banish them to the Pokerbooks section?Imagine a section of the forum, where FWP, Ryland, Ripptyde, JFarrel, Ally, and the like are mindlessly bickering and attention whoring... It's quite an idea, although I'm not sure it's wholly feasible.

I was going to say, Helmuth's book didn't even really help. I guess now I have general play characteristics categorized by "animals".. i'm an elephant. hahaI'm going to get my mom to buy me harrington on holdem for christmas. She's always whining I never want anything.I'll pick up Doyle's book today sometime.

Make sure she knows it's HOH volume 2. (get the others later, Vol 2 is the be-all-end-all for NLHE tourney literature).
