some help on this situation please

Recommended Posts

I have been routinely plagued by a certain situation. Here it is: Let's say I raise before the flop (either on the button or in late position) and I hit, not the nuts but a good hand (top pair top kicker, overpair, etc.) The flop checks to around to me and I make a standard continuation bet as the board has yielded a draw or two so no time to trap. I get a call from a player who is out of position''. Turn comes with an apparent blank and the same betting ensues (he checks, I bet, he calls.) ''Then after a seemingly harmless river, he leads off with a very large bet or an all-in.'' I have experienced this situation a few times both in no limit cash games and in tournaments. How am I to decipher between a player who has trapped me with a monster and one who has missed his draw and is making a desperation stab at the pot. I have called bluffs sometimes and sometimes I have payed off big hands. Occasionally I lay it down. I end up reverting to pot odds and how pot commited I am. Usually in this situation I am given 2 to 1 or so and it seems as though that is unfortunately the exact odds I would say this is a bluff (about 1 in 3.) Your thoughts? Oh and "it depends on the player" is not acceptable!java script:emoticon''

It really depends on the situation. This is kind of like asking "I have AQ preflop, what do I do?" This really depends on the action in front of you, and the position you are in. I don't have the answer to your question. Post some specific hands in the strategy forums, and you may find answers to some of your question.
