Thoughts On Non-standard Picks...

Recommended Posts

So, excluding the obvious picks that everyone is going to choose, who else do you like?On looks alone, Chad Batista gets as much action as he wants in real life... He seems to be made for events like the WSOP. Kinda burning up a pick on him since he may not play too many events other than NLHE, but I picked him anyway.

This year I went w/ guys who I thought were due for a breakout WSOP, even though they're probably somewhat standards. Hence, E-Dog high on the list (I have him winning a bracelet and barely missing a 2nd) and Todd Brunson (just a weird hunch).

Being that the list isn't super heavy on Hold Em events, I tried to go with the best all around players. I guess my non-standard pick was JC Tran.My list:SeidelNegreanuTranForrestHansenLindgrenCunninghamIveyBenyamineGreenstein

I also went with Michael Binger. I was very close to picking Gavin Smith as he is also due sometime soon.Humberto Brenes or Chad Brown would'nt be bad picks as they have both been really consistent the last few years.Gavin Griffin?

IMO, you should go with non hold'em guys since the pool is geared towards the high buy in events. Also guys who will play a lot of those events. My short list as of now in no particular order:Daniel NegreanuDavid ChiuTed ForrestJohn HenniganPhil IveyBarry GnreenstienMike Matusow (Crazy I know :-)Allen CunnninghamJohn JuandaScotty Nguyen Notice a trend with all these guys. These are all guys who've been around before the internet boom and have grinded in cash mixed games for years. All can play stud games, all can play flop games well. I'm predicting smaller fields in the bigger buy in events which suits this group well.

I've picked Hennigan in every single pool before this one but neglected to pick him this year. Bob, watch for a PM to alter my picks, if possible....Johnny World, ftw!

I based my list on frequent top finished, atleast in the televised events i've seen, and then its clearly going to be the big horse event that settles the score. My list looks like this:Daniel NegreanuMike Matusow Dave Ulliot Andy Bloch Doyle Brunson Ted Forrest John Juanda Minh Ly Humberto Brenes Gavin GriffinDoyle, Mike and Andy is solely because of the horse event. Then i went with Juanda because he plays lots of diff events. Ulliot usually makes it deep in the omaha eventsHumberto is clearly the NL hold'em money man, along with gavin griffin (who have been playing a lot of horse at PS)Daniel, you gotta destroy the stud games! Well Ted too, but as far as i know you still owe little matt a finale table trip, so you have first prio :)Minh Ly is my out of the pack pick, i think. He just seems to be everywhere without ever being noticed.

Dammit stop posting your picks until the deadline is over. You are going to stop everyone wasting their picks on NL "specialists"Mike Matusow is on my list, I went on the amount of mixed games and tournies they played, Daniel had to go and give tips though.a few wierd picks on my list and one crazy one, imo anyway

A good strategy is to pick players like the ones DN has put forth, but not the same ones since most people participating will havethe same players. That said, I'm sure I'll include at least three or four from his list, but the others will probably be less big names, but still known to play mixed games at the WSOP.
