Sports Guy References Poker Again

Recommended Posts

So any long time Sports Guy readers know, he's the nuts, but he is clueless about poker to an unbelievable degree. Its embarassing really. His latest faux pas comes in his article today on the KG trade to Boston. Near the end he makes some stupid comment about shoving a flush draw and the odds of that hitting being 25%. (you need one out of the four suits I guess??)Anyway, please for the love of all that is good, take the time to email him and beg him to never write or reference poker in any way ever again. His form to submit email is here:http://sports.espn.go.com/espn/page2/story...dback/sportsguyHere is the article he makes the comment in: (its towards the bottom)http://sports.espn.go.com/espn/page2/story...=simmons/070730Thanks.Mark

/agree and it really bothers me even though it shouldn't. I feel like strangling him. The worst part is I don't think he would consider even reading a book to learn about poker because he thinks it's all luck.

Looking back, it was like watching the World Series of Poker and seeing someone say "screw it!" by going all-in with a jack-nine of spades after a flop yielded two more spades. Is it smart to risk everything on the 25-percent chance that you'll get the flush? Well, it depends on how many chips you have left. If you're desperate, and you're running out of money, and you need a momentum swing, maybe you do it. If you get the flush, it doesn't mean you were a good poker player, it just means you were losing chips and had to take an enormous risk because you didn't have any other choice. :club:

I don't have the link, but his article from last summer (a year ago) when he played the main event was the worst thing I have ever read. Basically yeah, he got sucked out on and just ranted and raved about how it was all luck blah blah.Mark

Trust me I know...I have been reading him since his pre-ESPN days and I'm pretty sure I've never missed an article. He is so spot on about so many things this just hurts to think about.

In the big scheme of poker, I know that I don't know shit about poker, yet. That being said, back last year when he wrote about playing in his first WSOP ME, and his bust out hand, I knew even less. I didn't know anything. And even I knew that him whining about his bust out hand was a joke, enough to write to him about it back then.K10 sooted from MP, and getting upset when AK called his push on a king high flop and sucked out two running Q's? Please. ps - I absolutely adore the SG, (esp. being from NE) and read everything he writes voraciously.

Sports Guy is entertaining. He's definitely clueless about poker and nearly as clueless about one of the big four sports that he writes about frequently as if he's an expert, but I won't say which one because it always results in an argument. :)He's definitely at his best when he's referencing pop culture and having fun and at his worst when he's gloating about a Boston team. I often think New Englanders don't realize that the Red Sox and their fans are just as loathed, if not more, than the Yankees and their fans.

Any real fans from around here whose families have been following the Sox since forever, do realize this. We loathe the pink Red Sox hats, and all the fans from wherever, that think they're Red Sox fans. Ohhh, you liked to root for the underdog when you were a kid, bc they're wasn't a team in D.C. or whatever? Whoop. Oh, you visited Boston once and went to Fenway? Big deal. Oh, you're grandmother dated a guy from Boston once? Great. You went to school in Boston? BFD.Completely understand why people hate us now. I would too. It's bandwagon central, and has been for a long time, well before we won the WS.The whole 'Red Sox Nation' thing is a joke. And a marketing one at that. And on that note, being at The Fours drinking the night we did win the WS, and the mayhem that ensued in Boston for the rest of the night, was one of the most incredible things I've ever been a part of, and witness to. :club: Because we all knew that it was a lot larger than just that team, or any one of us. There are people that would have literally died if they could have traded places and let their fathers and/or grandfathers be there for it.

Oh no, it's 35% to hit the flush. What percentage of his readers do you think are hardcore anal poker number crunchers that started complaining about pot odds and the holding of the TAG/LAG/Maniac that may call the bet?

So what if we started liking the Red Sox mostly because we hated the Yankees? Legit?(I am first and foremost a Braves fan and consider the White Sox my AL team...despite barely ever having been to Chicago. I will generally cheer for the Red Sox as long as they're not playing one of those two teams.)

We're all overlooking the fact that THE CELTICS GOT KEVING ****ING GARNETT! Woooo! My time as a depressed Celtics fan is overrrr.Oh, and I love the sports guy. Read every article he's written over the past 5+ years. Podcasts are a great addition to his site as well.

Same boat here. I'll root for the Sox just to spite the Yanks. I'm sort of obligated to like the Bravos, but my weird team is the Tigers.

BILL SIMMONS IS THE NUTS..........The most clever and IMO the best sports writer on the planet is from your home town and writes about OUR teams constantly..As New Englanders we are spoiled....When BS goes away it will hurt as much as Pedro, Brady and Belichek IMO.And please we need pics of Sports Gal someday.....

Disclaimer: I will defend Bill Simmons even harder than Gman will go to bat for Hellmuth. That said, remember, Simmons is not talking to a poker forum about the KG trade.. He's relaying a poker term to his general reader base as an example of a semi-long shot. The "25%" is simply to let the average joe know that drawing to a flush is not a 50/50 in poker (Even on PokerStars).
