While NCAA Division 1 is usually reserved for kids that are on the pro route and NHL draftees, there are a lot of schools that offered Division 2, Division 3 hockey. Also ACHA, which is the American Collegiate Hockey Association has club hockey that offers scholarships at various levels.

Just so you know...

There is no NCAA D2 hockey. Only D1 and D3.

ACHA does not offer scholarships. There are school that will offer "financial aid" to make sure a player they want on the club team can go to the school, but those are few and far between. That being said, ACHA D1 has some very high level of play. There are several teams in the Pgh area that I have seen play and/or reffed. Lots of Jr A guys and NCAA D1/D3 transfers. Even ACHA D2/D3 hockey, which can vary much more in skill level from the top to the bottom, has some very good players and teams.

Oh, and hi there!

It took me a while but I think I am finally grasping how the system works. I know a few kids locally that have moved on to D3 NCAA and some ACHA D1...Skill level is not too far off..

I think the college hockey system in the US is stellar and a great opportunity for kids playing hockey here. I would love if my kids can get into a program and play hockey in school.

On the flip side more and more pro players are going thru the college system. I think unless you are in the top percentile of junior players that can play pro hockey at 18 years old, its the best option for most kids.

Oh also like you said ACHA doesnt offer scholarships, however I am on the board of directors of a College program that will be affiliated with ACHA next year, and we will forego costs of some players.

The high end D3 teams can compete and even beat some of the low D1 schools. In the NE, they will play each other early in the season sometimes to save on travel costs.

I played ACHA D2 at Purdue. We did not have a rink on campus so we had to drive an hour to Indy to practice and play. That really hurt us in getting and keeping players that went to school due to the large time commitment for a club sport.

And I agree on the college route being the best option for most.

Oh also like you said ACHA doesnt offer scholarships, however I am on the board of directors of a College program that will be affiliated with ACHA next year, and we will forego costs of some players.

Right, there are definitely teams and schools that do what they can do to get players there.

I hear talk about scholarships etc in soccer and softball (for my girls). I always said screw them. I don't want my girls going to an US school. I actually want my girls to get a Canadian education. I have 2 clients who kids got scholarships and one is in track (full). The father keeps driving to Albany at least 3-4 times a month. The other is golf and it's not full. He pays huge. At the soccer banquet one of the rep coachs kept going on about how 3 of his boys are being scouted for scholarships in the States. Parents have this gleam in their eyes while I am thinking what the heck is wrong with a Canadian education? Otto's bestfriend had a chance for a D2 scholarship in football but went to St. Mary's instead.

Also I know someone who's daughter got a soccer scholarship. In her 2nd year she got pregnant and is now living in Georgia with 2 kids (and no degree).

Another thing is the cousins in DC always talk about tuition costs etc. I just shake my head and just pay Otto's tuition with a smile. Mind you I am also paying the wife's Masters since she enrolled at CMU (ughhhh).

I played in a tourney in May. That was the only time I have skated in about a year. I am hurting today. So out of shape.

While its been a very tough year for Adrian's team he had a pretty big tournament this weekend in San Jose. It was the Silver Sticks which a huge North American tourney winners were to go to Canada. We didnt qualify( his younger friends on the Peewees did however)

So Adrian's stat line for the weekend.. 2-1-1 110 shots against ...3 GA.... 0.75 GAA .973 Save percentage with 2 shutouts (shots were actually more, as one game the scorekeeper wasnt paying attention)

You would think that would be good enough to at least make it to the final of a tourney..Unfortunately the team scored a total of 4 goals and we lost a weird mathematical tie breaking procedure where we needed one more goal to advance.

While its been the worst team he has been on overall, he is turning some heads as he had some suits watching him at the tourney. He has gained a lot of confidence and has handled the added stress very well. The way the team is set up, if he has an off game the team has no chance to win. Last year he would have off games and the team would pick him up by scoring 6 or 7..Not an option this year as we are typically outshot by a huge 2-1 or even 3-1 margin.

He is going to a fairly large tryout in two weeks , where its the first step in identifying the top American hockey players at different ages. He got a special invite to try out, even though he doesnt play on a "tier" team. If he makes it then he will go to a camp with all the top kids in the Pacific district.

He is at an age now, where if he wants to pursue this, he has to want to work at it. I ask him every day and so far he seems to want to. While playing pro is not in the cards, there are a lot of opportunities to play at a high level Junior team and possibly get a college scholarship.

I read this thread from the beginning sometimes, just to see how far we have come along in Minor hockey.

That’s good Serge

Not sure if anyone knows but my wife likes to shop. We have been hitting Black Friday for 20 years and pretty much base it out of Detroit.

On Friday night we went to a Dick Clearance store. Spent $300 and the stuff retail for $1,200. Shopping Cart was packed and the lineup took 1.5 hours. So as I stood in line for a long time I always make small chit chat with folks beside me. One was a couple with a beautiful young 20 year old daughter who purchase a Nyquist authentic Adidas jersey for $45. I kept telling her she was buying the wrong team

The other couple behind me the father love to golf. He said he was going to play more because it was the last year for his daughter who played softball (no scholarship) and is off to University. He said he absolutely love the time during the years for his daughter and would never trade it for anything. I than told him both of my girls play. His face turn to jealousy since I had 2 and he saw the younger one. He said to me just enjoy the ride. The memories will definitely last a lifetime. I told him some of my memories (not good ones) and we laughed. The time talking to him about girls softball really shorten the time in line.

As I type this my knees need to be ice since I was my daughter catcher for practice tonight

This was posted and people are upset with it:

High School Prospects Camp

Sunday, February 3, 2019 - 9:00 am to 12 noon.

Fieldhouse Athletics

5230 Harvester Road

Burlington, ON L7L 4X4

For any high school students (Grades 9 to 12) wishing or interested in continuing their softball careers at the Canadian University of College level. The Prospects Camp is an opportunity to showcase your fastpitch skills in front of coaches from the various Ontario universities and colleges.

The camp will be held at Fieldhouse Athletics, one of the country's premier training facilities for high performance baseball and softball development. It has multiple batting cages and has an open area with rubber infill ProTurf, ideal for long toss throwing, and for infield/outfield drills.

Kirsten Grant and Lana Van Dyken from Fieldhouse Athletics and ex. North Carolina State players will be conducting the fielding and batting drills for the Prospects Camp. The camp is not only creating exposure for you, but will also develop your skills to play at this level.

It is a great opportunity for players to learn about the fastpitch programs at the various Ontario universities and colleges and to connect with some of the coaches. It is also a chance for coaches to see some of the great players from our rep programs.

Space is limited to 45 players

Registration Fees $100.00

So the Ryerson Fastpitch team is putting this together and people are complaining why they are doing it. Ryerson is doing it as a fundraiser for their team.

Will I be sending my older daughter (she is in grade 9). No.

So you think its a scam to make money rather than showcasing the girls?

It’s selling parents on scholarships. Ryerson set it up to make money for their team.

There is a team in Burlington that is setup for players to get scholarships in the States. Cost is very high and parents pay it. However we played a Burlington team late September and beat them.

All I can say is my girls will play for the enjoyment of the sport. When they don’t want to anymore I will pull them out

But I remember speaking to my wife how the girls will not play Rep sports. Well I guess that didn’t work out well

I bought my daughter (Malone) her first pair of skates for Christmas or her 3rd birthday (Jan 10). I also got her a helmet/cage.

I also got my wife her first pair of skates for Christmas because she's been giving me shit about buying Malone skates but I have never taken her skating in 7+ years.

My older daughter also plays for a Rep soccer team in Scarborough. They have a Wednesday practice at a high school on Galloway.

I felt a bit insecure when leaving the school at 9:30 pm.

Yes both soccer and softball are year round training

Wife wanted to put the younger one on a soccer team and I said no. Don’t think I can deal with 4 teams. However to get on a team now is hard since no one takes another girl spot unless you are really good

Is soccer go all year? I guess they are practicing inside

Every sport goes all year now. I was just talking to my friend who has a 9, soon to be 10, year old about that. His kid plays baseball and football. The kid was discouraged by this summer's baseball because a lot of the other kids progressed much more than him. Well, those kids played fall ball and spring ball. My buddy's kid played football in the fall and enjoyed free time in the spring. Also, the coaches also did fall and spring with those players so his son feels like they're all buddy-buddy where he is the new guy and not in their clique.

At 9-10 years old, he is already feeling pressure to pick one sport, stick with it, and play year round. Crazy, right? But some of you have probably gone through it with your kids?

Yes the pressure to play one sport. My older daughter knows this well. However she does love both sports right now and wants to play both. It’s a little hard during the summer but we are going to give it a shot. I believe that is the reason she didn’t make one softball team since I put down she plays soccer too. The softball coach for my younger daughter actually called me and asked if she play other sports before she offer a position
