Answer To Quizz Question #15

Recommended Posts

This is a pretty close decision, but it's one of those key decisions that seperates a decent Stud 8 player from a great one. Several things to consider:1) The open 99 doesn't necessarily have trips. Remember, he called a raise from a Q. If he did that with split 99's you'd have to assume he is a bad player.2) You have two different three card straights and a three card flush draw. That might outdraw the 99's. If you don't, you are still a favorite to make a low hand.3) This was a raised pot on third street with multiple callers.4) The player with 10-7 showing likely has a three card draw to a 7 low. Any idea what all that means? It means you should raise. For one, you want to get that player with the 10-7 out. If you just call the bet, you'd be allowing the 10-7 a chance to get a great price to take a card off and get back on the low draw. You DON'T want that, you want him out. If you raise and the Queen calls, sweet. That means you'll be in a three handed pot where you are the only player going low. Hit a low card on fifth or sixth street and you could find yourself in a great positiion. Also, if you happen to pair one of your hole cards on fifth or six street, you might get a free card from the 99 (assuming the pot it heads up and the Queen folded for your raise.) If all your opponent had on fifth street was a pair of 99 and a busted three flush, if you catch a pair of fours on fifth street you'd be in excellent shape as two pair might even win it for you. The ONLY terrible cards you could catch on fifth street are a 9, 10, J, Q, K that are NOT a club. In Super System II, Todd Brunson goes into great detail explaining why the raise is correct.

The 99 scooped the pot with trips. As for ALWAYS making the play, that would be a yes ONLY if all of the following parameters were true. If for example you had a hand like 2-4-5-6 with three clubs against the A-Q and the 7-10, you'd actually want them BOTH in.

LOL about the 99 scooping the pot w/ trips...guess the 99 did call the raise from the Q up on 3rd street w/ split 9's?? So who was the bad player...LOL? As always, tks for the insight DN...always appreciated...and congrats on the half mil cash game win...hope to hear more of these kinda wins instead of sick beats!

You caught 3 bricks eh? Thats just brutal. Your right, the player that called a raise from the Q with split 9's was a bad player. Now, I have a question on this. If the same situation happens in a 8 or Better Tournament, do you make the same decision. I have seen a similar situation and the raise actually ended up causing the pot to get capped.
