Tiltinagain 973
what's common core math? The most nonsensical way of teaching math to unsuspecting kids ever devised.
Napa Lite 3,278
It's actually highly intuitive and is how most intelligent adults eventually figure out how to do mental math except we're fast tracking children and teaching them to think about how math works as opposed to just memorizing formulas and theorems.
SuitedAces21 2,722
wow, two of my three main guys disagree. i can't choose.
Napa Lite 3,278
I bet Tilty has gotten his education on common core from Facebook posts and Fox News and hasn't actually looked at the core standards because if he had he would see that they don't specify one way of doing math but focus more on the why and how of math while trying to make kids better at mental math and problem solving.
SuitedAces21 2,722
couple dozen beers and we'd be solving the einstein problem. there's no stopping three true bros that love each other.
BigDMcGee 3,352
I haven't taken Common core, but literally anything has to be better than the way I was taught math in high school , so I'll side with Napa

BigDMcGee 3,352
I'd bet against Brvy siding with common core

Tiltinagain 973
I have nephews in grade school. They have to be taught the "right" way to do math before they can figure out how common core works. My bet is Napa has never tried to actually do common core with a 10'year old to see how counter intuitive it is to them. I still love ya though.
Napa_Don 688
I make it a point to not hang out with 10 year olds. And my parole officer doesn't appreciate it. I have looked over various levels of curriculum though. The whole point is that it isn't intuitive to children. That's why we have to teach them. Not my fault they're lazy millennials and not willing to put in the work. The way this economy is going you're going to have to be able to understand programming and a solid understanding of math theory is essential to advanced programming and the sooner we start teaching kids that, the better.
SuitedAces21 2,722
i think the hard truth is that anyone under the age of 25 is probably too far gone to be of use to society going forward. better to put them in labor camps now and be done with it. math has no meaning to them.

brvheart 1,752
I don't know anything about common core, but I'm all for teaching kids with a system that works for the individual. So as long as there are multiple options, I'm going with that one. I homeschool my kids. I could care less what happens to public school kids.
