So like, say a 45-year old defenseless woman is mugged outside of her apartment building in an apparently bad part of Winnipeg and then stabbed 7 times with a knife by two assailants... she miraculously survives and is now in the hospital... police pick up at least one of the attackers...

Is that the kind of thing you'd expect to find in some sort of news publication, because I can't find a single mention of it anywhere.

So... the above story was about my aunt. And it happened late on Monday night. She’s apparently ok. Had surgery overnight and they fixed some things. Outlooks are good. They arrested the second person earlier tonight.

Still nothing in the news. I don’t know why, but it bothers me quite a bit. Seems newsworthy to me. Or I don’t know how frequent and not unusual random stabbings are in Winnipeg?

I think maybe I was just looking for answers and details that I couldn’t ask my family about. Maybe that’s why the lack of news coverage bothered me.

Sorry to hear about your aunt.

I honestly don't know if its something that happens too frequent to be newsworthy, or just something that was missed up til now.

And frankly speaking, I'm fairly confused by what is and is not considered newsworthy by most people, at this point in my life.

I know the first post about this was kinda weird. I was just bothered and had no other outlet that felt appropriate.

Seems like it’ll be all ok and there’ll be not much of a public thread since both attackers have been arrested.

Apparently one was 16. (Which may have contributed to the lack of coverage?)

Its the same reason why they don't publish all crimes in Jane/Finch area.

My Dad back in the day had a huge knife pulled on him at our restaurant, our neighbour got busted for selling weed & had weapons in his restaurant, pizza guy getting stab for his pizza, etc.

Happens alot they don't publish

Wish a fast recovery for your aunt

Sorry to hear about your aunt Zach. I’m glad it wasn’t a lot worse and she recovers soon.

Sorry about your Aunt Zach, Hope she makes a full recovery.

As far as the news, it is definitely newsworthy if they catch wind of it, but I imagine it would be pretty easy for something like that to just go completely unnoticed by the news outlets.

I have a police officer as a client. All he says when he sees me is that I don’t hear about all the stuff in my neighborhood. He sees it but we don’t hear it

Thanks guys.

The Winnipeg police released a media statement about the arrests and incident today.

So heartbreaking to read. Absolute miracle that she’s alive and will probably make a full (physical) recovery.

****ing idiots in the PC party voting in a moron like Doug Ford as their leader is going to force me to vote for the freaking NDP. I so so hate the Ontario Liberals.

To me, NDP and Liberal are pretty interchangeable. Like, both are relatively progressive. I guess NDP, theoretically more so, but Liberal still a bit. So, in these types of elections, I'm pretty happy to just go with whichever of those two parties are most likely to beat the PCs.

The Liberals really do need to go, so I'm happy the NDP seems to be somewhat competent and coherent this time around. The Libs have been a pretty big disappointment since the last election.

Hoping more of those Liberal votes swap over the to the NDP in time for the election.

I actually got door knocked by the NDPs this weekend, which is a first for me, for any political party at any level. Turns out the NDP won my riding last time around, and the dude seems to be pretty good. So I know where my vote is going.

I land in Toronto on election day..Probably right after the polls close. I checked the laws about Canadians living abroad voting..I got this from the elections canada website..Its for federal election however..Not sure how it applies to me..I guess I can vote..

you live abroad, you may apply to be added to the International Register of Electors and vote by special mail-in ballot in future federal elections at any time.

To be included in the International Register of Electors, you must:

  • be qualified to vote (i.e. a Canadian citizen at least 18 years old on election day)
  • have resided in Canada at any time before applying
  • confirm that you intend to return to Canada to reside by providing the date on which you intend to resume residence in Canada, and
  • confirm that you have resided abroad for less than five consecutive years, or provide proof that you fall within one of these exceptions to the five-year rule:
    • You are employed outside Canada in the federal public administration or the public service of a province – or live with someone who is;
    • You are employed outside Canada by an international organization of which Canada is a member and to which Canada contributes – or live with someone who is; or
    • You live with a member of the Canadian Forces or with a person who is employed outside Canada by the Canadian Forces as a teacher in, or as a member of the administrative support staff for, a Canadian Forces school.

I would love to hear why you all hate the Ontario liberals so much. At first it was only my annoyingly conservative and/or uninformed people hating on them, and their conplaints were the same kind of derivative complaints they’d have said against just about any liberal government at any time. But the last few months...I’m not sure I’ve ever seen such unanimous hatred. Not the ‘lame duck’ disinterest but real hate, and from people who don’t form that opinion for no reason.

Since I don’t follow Ontario politics at all, I’m really just curious what everyone’s beef is, since I almost never hear specific complaints or any huge scandals.

So from that I understand I cant vote after living abroad for more than 5 years, unless I provide a date in which I will resume residence in Canada

And as per Bob’s post, I know everyone hates the other options but I hope a great many people come to the conclusion that Ford is just not an option. We learned from Trump that “they’re both bad so vote for lower taxes” is not a sufficient thought process. So hate all you want, vote NDP or liberal, vote conservative next, don’t care. A vote for Ford crosses a line, in my opinion. (Though I’d personally wonder how to rationalize voting for the party that even nominated Ford in a future election, but that’s a topic for another day).

And this has nothing to do with my last post. I honestly know nothing about Wynne and the party but I fully expect to hear legitimate bad stuff based on the hardcore hate I hear from people I respect.

I can’t vote NDP and my hate for the Liberals is forcing me to vote PC.

The Liberals are crooks.

Why are they crooks? (Not saying I disagree)

I rather not say here. From what I saw and heard from reputable people I deal with they are crooks.

What makes me sick is Wynne trying to buy votes and putting Ontario into a further hole with the increase in min wage, free day care, free medicala for people under 18 (or is it 21) etc
