Tournament setup question

Recommended Posts

So here's the problem. Are there any "standard" rules for the blind structure in a no limit hold em tournament. I am back home from college and my friends have a ridiculous structure. You start with 5,000 in chips the first level of blinds is 100-200 and is raised every 20 minutes. I first thought this starting amount was a bit high, but then I realized the next level of blinds is 200-400, then 400-800 they just pass up the middle steps (150-300 etc..).They are fairly stubborn people and didn't even like my suggestion to play those middle level of blinds. I found a different structure on homepokertourney.com, but I don't think that will persuade them. Does anyone have some type of official link that solves this? Maybe like in the wsop or on the wpt or even casino rules. Thanks for any helpBrando

its completely up to whoever sets the tournament up. if you really want to change it, tell whoevers in charge why, presumbly the tournament gets too much like a crap shoot too quickly and see if they'll change it. if they wont, because they dont have the time for a long drawn out tournament or they just prefer it that way, then you cant really do anything about it except set your own tournament up with your structure

A buddy of mine from work invited me and a few friends out to a hold em tourney one night. The format there was 10,000 in chips, blinds start 100-200 and double every 15 minutes (there was a timer set up). They doubled the blinds so much because they wanted to squeeze in 3 tourneys in a night ($20 buy in, $20 buy in, $10 buy in). We had never played with blind raises that intense. (we usually raise either every half hour, or with every player eliminated). I realized how different this made the game instantly and made the proper adjustments to my game. I was lucky enough to take First, fourth and second, which made me around $200 on the night, I think. My friends weren't as lucky. (one got busted by pocket A's with pocket K's twice) The adjustment to a game that quick and that different is pretty dramatic. I would ask your friends, first of all, why they play that way, and encourage them to at least give YOUR rules a shot. Either that, or volunteer to host the next tourney, then you can set your own rules. Hopefully either you can understand the benefits of playing their way, or they'll conform to your blind raises. Or maybe you can hit a happy medium where you rotate styles. Best of luck, and keep playing, no matter what. The blinds may affect your style and your usual methods, but it may make you a better player to try something different and expand your game.
