Tournament Winning Percentages

Recommended Posts

I have been playing small buy in sit and go tournaments trying to build my bankroll. I have had decent success over the last 4 months and if I had just stuck to my plan and continued doing this without getting involved in the other games at this point I am sure that I would have allot more to play with, and would be up to the higher buy in tournaments online. It is important to me that I enjoy poker but do it in a financially responsible manner. I believe that if I can't win enough to play in the $20 sit and goes then I am not good enough and don't deserve to be there anyway. Well in the last 4-5 weeks I can really feel my game progressing. I am placing in the money about 38% of the time(18 player tourney finishing at least 4th) and I am placing first about 1 out of 3 times I finish in the top 4.My question is how many times do I need to win, place, etc over the course of however many games to know that I am a very good player at this level online? I need to know what to shoot for.My thought was if I could place in the top 4 at least 50% of the time and then take 1st 50% of the time that I finish in the top 4, I would be doing great. I am not sure if this is too good to shoot for or if it is reasonable. All feedback would be greatly appreciated. Thanks,

STT SNGs (3 places pay)? I think you need to place ITM atleast 40% of the time, winning 1/3 of those, at low buy-ins (<$10). At $10 buy-ins, this puts you between $10 - $15 per hour played (depending on the number of 2nd place finishes). Cut those in half for $5 buy-ins. Anything less, are you really profitable?

I think you're really close to the right amount of win percentage for sit and gos, especially two tables. I did this exact thing exclusively for a couple of months and noticed a good profit from it placing in the money about 50% of the time. If you're doing two tables you can reduce the percentages because you get a better return on your buy in. What I suggest you do is keep track of all the tournaments you play in and keep track of your net win/loss ratio. It will become evident how well you are doing.

I may be going about this the wrong way but I wasn't really looking at it from an hourly rate of pay stand point. Maybe because of the buy in being so low I didn't want to be depressed. LOLI was mainly looking at it as how many times do I place and win percentage wise for how many tourneys I play. I wonder if Daniel played 100 S&Gs how many times he would place in the top 4 out of 18 players and how many times he hit the top 4 would he win. Obviously I don't expect to be at his level but for a good player I wonder what their percentages would be.Thanks for all the feedback,

I would think that you're doing pretty well at 38%. When I played sit and gos exclusively for a couple of months I made a pretty good profit and I would estimate that my win percentage was around the same that you are at right now.
