Legalizing Poker!!!!

Hey everyone just want to say love this site!! I live in Texas now and I am from Canada. I think it is stupid that card rooms are illegal and want to know how we can change that. Being from Canada I do not know that much about how laws are made in Texas. I really want some ideas on what the first step might be i.e. a petition. With the popularity so high it seems like the time to strike is now.

Im also from Texas and all I have to say is wait till you're legal age to play Poker. For now just play home tournaments. Theres no need to do a strike... Im only 17 and Im just going to patiently wait until I can hit up the cardrooms and casinos.

First off, if you are from Houston, like me, there is no need for casinos. John Smiley and Matt Dean have created a Houston based poker community. Multiple cash games running every night, tournaments all the time with average of $1,500 for 1st and a big ass trophy...not the kind you got in tee ball either! Big glass trophies with engravings and stuff. They have a website and a forum with upcoming events and all sorts of neat stuff. Great group of people. Pokercampus.comAs for legalizing gambling in Texas...we've been trying for years. It won't work for two big reasons. 1) We have too many baptists. That's not a joke.2) Louisianna would be pissed if we did. That's not a joke, either.Alot, lot, lot, of Louisianna's gamblers come from Texas, and alot of folks that have to go to Louisianna to gamble would drive fewer miles if Texas had it's own casinos. We would almost cripple the Louisianna economy. I may be a conspiricy theorist, but I think some fat cats in Louisianna are paying off Texas polititions. That's not a mother f'in joke!! And with all the baptists that believe that gambling is a sin, would have a big "say so" in the petition. There would be a yes on 222 (legalize gambling) and the no on 222 (not legalize gambling). The baptist's are so abundant that I think they would win. Anyway, there is alot of ways around it. These are the laws to have poker in Texas:1) You can not hold a poker game of any form in a public place. (Bars, night clubs, etc.)2) You can not have money on the table at any time. (you have to have everyone's money exchanged for chips.)3) The house can not be payed. (no rake...even making people bring extra money to help pay for food is "iffy", although most of the time you can get away with it)4) Odds of winning must be equal for all players5) No person may collect economic benefits aside from personal winnings.So, you can abide by the rules and still have alot of fun, and make alot of money. My suggestion is to send out some flyers for a home game (make sure you have chips and a table), then once you get a few regulars, create a webpage that they can check up on to see who has already RSVPed a seat and what kind of game is going on (i.e. $50 NLHE tournament, $1/2 NL cash game, etc.). Have fun fellow Texans...sorry the post was so long, just big issure for us folks.PM if you are from Houston.-Chris-

That IS a joke. Texas is full of methodists and church of christ types Baptists are often much more liberal on their political thinking. At least up here in Colorado.

IT'S A JOKEBut seriously, methodists and church of christ. Anyone who's driven through texas knows there's a methodist church on every other corner, facing the church of christ on the opposite corner. ;)haha!

I'm being dead serious. I've done some research on this--I wanted to petition as well. The state of Texas is split between Catholic and Baptists. What I mean is, there is mostly Catholic and Baptists, the numbers being equal. Church of Christ and Methodists are the minorities. My county is a "dry county" due to the number of baptists. There is not one bar in Deer Park, resturaunts are not alowed to serve alcohol, and there is one single liquer store in the whole city...and it's right on the edge, man. Your area might be mostly Methodists and Church of Christ members, but as for the state of Texas as a whole...Baptists and Catholics are the majority. Read up on it. I promise.

We just voted here in oklahoma to legalize class3 gaming in indian casinos and they are building poker rooms as fast as they can. I think it started w/ the governor wanting the state to get a cut of the indian profit. they have to give 10% of the rake/ month to the state in return for class3 slots and non-house banked card games. This will prob. spill over to texas but until then come on up and play w/ us.....

I know you're serious. And, of course, baptists are the prominent group in texas, as they are in many states, with 4.5 million members, around 3 million catholics, 1.2 million methodists, and only 400,000 Church of Christers. Legalized gambling in Texas would not be any more likely were it true that methodists or CoC where in the same spot. Which was the point I was trying to light-heartedly make. However, I'm not well versed in catholic views of gambling, so I don't know where things would go should they be the majority, but I would suppose they wouldn't be much different.We have yet to escape the early nineteen hundreds organized crime tarnishing of everyone's view of casinos and thus, gambling. Aside from the misguided moral objections, there's the fact that nearly everyone who doesn't play poker has this view of it that you're going to bet away your house and wife and children. That has very little to do with religious or denominational dispositions. It's a ubiquitous cultural thing. Colorado's laws still mention organized crime in relation to gambling.

Why you gotta play like that? :x Anyway, we should just rid Texas of all the worthless baptists. Not only are they bad for the economy...All work and no gamble makes Chris a dull boy.
