three-betting instead of check-raising

Recommended Posts

an interesting hand came up today where i observed a great post-flop play by another player at my table (low limit fixed limit). i don't have the hand history but that's not really the important part.i was dealt JJ in middle position, folded over to me. i raised and got two late position callers and the big blind called. the flop came Axx (the A was the only overcard to my jacks), and the big blind bet. i like to raise on these flops to take control of the hand and see if i can isolate and get people to fold on later streets. one late position folded, the other called, and the big blind three-bet it. i knew i was in trouble, so i simply called to see if i could spike a jack on the turn, otherwise i was out. no jack on the turn, so i folded to a bet.here's the interesting part: the BB had AA, and rather than go for the checkraise, knowing that i would probably bet on that flop since i was the preflop aggressor, she bet into me knowing i would raise (as many preflop aggressors tend to do) so she could three-bet it and get in another bet. thus, although it's riskier in a way (the preflop aggressor might simply fold or call), it's potentially more +EV to get another bet in when you have the best hand (similar to checkraising versus betting and getting only calls).of course, her preflop play wasn't so hot, only calling with AA.i might give it a try if i have a medium pocket pair and i spike a set on the flop--bet into the preflop aggressor and see if he raises you (which he most likely will in a multiway pot).aseem

I like to just call a raise with AA or KK sometimes when I have position on an opponent and if it's only headsup or 2 players. I like to let a player lead out and bet with a worst hand than me, when your doing this, your maximizing profit potential rather than betting out and just getting callers. Of course, this is not the time to do so with multiple callers and in the big blind. You don't need to disguise your hand here, because you want to be betting out and in control of the hand. With a flop like that, the only hand that will pay her off is AK, AQ, AX possibly, and drawing hands so she has to bet out and not give free cards.
