I have a major problem with tilt. Everytime I take a really bad beat I just get so frustrated and can't play. I always say to myself before i play If I take a bad beat I have to stop playing for a couple hours but never do it. Any advice on how to deal with this and not let my emotions get the better of me?

I used to have this problem too. A lot of it is just seeing more hands, playing more tables and knowing that you're going to recover from it and it's going to happen.I remember reading SS2's section with Mike Caro where he talked about bad beats. He said, "Every time you suffer a bad beat and just HAVE to tell someone about it, don't. Nobody cares. I might pretend to care, but I'm really thinking about what I'm going to do tonight." (I paraphrased) I also heard a video clip of a speech he gave where he said that bad beats are the result of you doing everything right. So, when you have a bad beat, remember that YOU likely played the hand correctly and be proud of that.

Try to remember all of the times that the others awful play has given you money, the big pots were people have had a bad hand and not gotten lucky. Bad players are a good thing even if it does get frustrating. If you want to be successful at poker you either need to learn to handle bad beats (not let them effect your play) or learn to quit when you on tilt, without those disciplines you will never be a great player. Good luck on improving in that aspect of poker.

You playing with a tight bankroll ?
No, I have another job poker is just a hobby but I am very competitive and hate to lose.
You should stop playing poker then.
This is an option but I really love it. Every time I sit down at a table it is a great experience. It doesn't matter wether I win or lose however I would rather lose to a better player than throwing all my money away while on tilt.

Here's what you do...tell yourself the next time you start to tilt that you will walk outside for 5 minutes before you take another hand. Don't worry poker is like water it is always there. you won't miss anything. If you do this once and you make it habit then you can start to get away from tilting your money and concentrate on giving it to the better players.

you need to understand what makes you tilt. in your case it seems to be that youare success oriented.define success in your own terms.success should be making the right play not winning the hand.if you define success by others perceptions of it you'll always be a looser because you can never win enough money.life is want. want is suffering. learn that your wants are actually what others want and cannot get (they suffer) and so they bring you down to their level by making you want them too.
