A new client came to my office today. They thought it was messy. I was about to tell them to take a hike.

Was surprised to see how cheap the tickets were..

We live in Fresno so there is no direct flights from here to the East Coast..We typically have to drive to LA or San Fran to get a direct flight to Toronto..Or pay much more for a flight from here to there..

I was able to book a flight out of Fresno to SF and then to Toronto for only $300 with everything included..Not too bad at all.

There is no comparison on airline costs Canada vs USA. Way cheaper. When I book travel for the family we fly out of Buffalo since we save approximately $1,500. However the 2 times I flew with Otto we did it out of Pearson since the savings outweigh the travel to Buffalo and because I was lazy

not true. Landlord tenant act heavily slanted towards tenants. Gray phrasing like ‘reasonable attempt to pay’ make it easy to not pay rent.

A few years ago I was going to buy a rental property for an income stream. I took a 3 hour Landord/tenant act seminar held by a lawyer. By the end of the seminar, I was no longer interested in buying the rental house.

Iím continuing to pay the rent. Problem is, they think they raised the rent a year ago, but failed their duty to tell me (and continued to accept the old rent for 9 months before ever mentioning anything - and even then, it was only because I inquired on a related matter)... and now they send me a bill for the difference.

They have a legal requirement to notify you in writing in advance of any rent increase. If they didn't do it, you don't owe it.

This...

Everyone thinks its easy to make money with rental properties..So many laws, fees and headaches that go along with it...It can be done, but lot to know and administer.

Right. They claim they did.

I guess I want legal advice (or equivalent?) telling me that my best course of action is to continue paying the rent as I calculate it and to ignore the bill they sent me.

I did talk to a tenant hotline person about this a month or two ago and received that advice (though explicitly told it was not legal advice).

I'm almost certain the notice of a rent increase has to be in writing.

It does. They claim it was delivered, I never received it.

To complicate matters, effective Jan 1, the City sent me a letter automatically lowering by rent by 0.91% (a provincial policy in the event that a multi-unit residential building's property tax burden decreases by a set amount or more).

Shortly after receiving that notice, I received a notice about a rent increase for April 1, 2018 (which would mark the 2 year mark of my tenure in this apartment). Legally, of course, they were able to increase the rent at any point after April 1, 2017 (with written notice 3 months in advance). This is all legal so far.

My rent started at $1050. April 1, 2017 passed without me getting any notice, so I continued to pay $1050. Late 2017, I get the notice of decrease, so I start paying $1040.44 on January 1st. I get the rent increase notice in late December 2017, telling me the guideline (maximum increase) for 2018 is 1.8%, but the new rent amount on the notice shows an "increase of $19.18 to $1084.93".

The math doesn't check out. Even if they didn't apply it to the newly reduced rent, the max I would be paying is $1050 * 1.018 = $1068.90. In reality, the increase must be calculated against the decreased rate, so my new rent, starting April 1, 2018, should be $1059.18.

So I call them to ask about the discrepancy, and that's where it all came out that they claim they gave me notice back in late 2016 for an April 2017 increase. That's all it really boils down to. My lack of receipt vs their claim of delivery.
