a good tournament structure

Recommended Posts

The following structures could be used for both your home private games or the big tournaments on TV. In fact, I think ALL major tounraments should adopt the following structure:10,000 starting chips25-5050-100100-200100-200 (25)150-300 (50)200-400 (50)300-600 (75)400-800 (100)500-1000(100)600-1200(200)800-1600(200)1000-2000(300)1200-2400(400)1500-3000(500)2000-4000(500)3000-6000(1000)4000-8000(1000)5000-10000(1000)6000-12000(2000)8000-16000(2000)10000-20000(3000) For the major events this structure should be used with 90 minute levels. For fun little home games you can up the blinds every 10 hands, 10 minutes, or every round (depending on # of players). It is a fun way to also learn how to play the big events.

We use 1000 in startchips1 x 5003 x 1005 x 255 x 105 x 5Blinds5/1010/2015/3020/40Chiprace25/5050/10075/150100/200150/300Chiprace200/400300/600400/800500/1000600/1200800/16001000/20001500/30002000/4000Works fine, on a good night there are 36(ish) playing and we spend about 4-5 hours finding a winner, levels are 15 minutes and 15 minute breaks at each chiprace and sometimes we take a break later in the tournament.

Some friends and I are planning a 2 day event. And advice/thoughts would be great from anyone...esp Daniel as he has a bit of expeirence as to what a good tournament is.30 players17 hours (12 first day 5 second) with the final table being on the second day.10,000 starting chips for $50.00 with 1 rebuy for first 2-3 hours and 1 add on. So we hve more than average chips available...My main concern is that the blinds are still too much....starting the second day we estimate 750,000 in chips to be in play...with a BB of 10,000 avg stack has 7.5 BB is this typical or just plain wrong?I have a few questtions on modifications based on this info. With fewer players over a long time we have the antes a little lower. We reach a 200 ante when we get to the 1500-3000 level.(here is the structure)day1.jpg We plan to enter the final table with blinds of:Day 2 Sunday day2.jpg*Sorry for the images... getting thewhite space right with forums is annoying. All those tags and nothing for preformatted text :(Cheers,Tyler

two things.first.TylerMayes a two-day 30 person tournament is a little over the top. 30 person tourney with 10K in starting chips should at the most take 6 hours. At the absolute most! it will probably be done in less -somwhere around 4-5 hours.second.as daniel said, to avoid mess start your tournaments with fewer chips.split as follows. 1 x 5k chip2 x 1k chip5 x 500 chip5 x 100 chipno need to color-up.employ a blind structure as follows (ante in brackets)100-200200-400300-600400-800500-1000 (100)600-1200 (200)800-1600 (300)1000-2000 (400)1500-3000 (500)2000-4000 (500)2500-5000 (500)3000-6000 (500)5000-10000 (1000)8000-16000 (1000)10000-20000 (1000)15000-30000 (1000)

Suggestion, upi the byu-in. That's a whole lot of time for a minimal payout. 1st place is barely getting $1K.

Some friends and I held a 21 person tournament using the suggested blinds and chip amounts, with a 40 minute blind structure. It took us 8 HOURS to finish the madness. Now fortunately i won the tourney but why did it take so long? Is this just the tail of the normal curve for length of a tournament this size or do we need to make shorter levels? Ideally it'd go about 6 hours.ThanksDoug

I like the 10K starting chips idea... we usually start with 1500Use these blinds:10 20 20 40 30 60 -----break-----50 100 75 150 100 200 -----break-----150 300 200 400 300 600 -----break-----400 800 500 1000 600 1200-----break----- 800 16001000 2000 1200 2400We don't use 5/10 or 15/30 to avoid needing '5' chips...Seems to work...

we usually only play 10-20 dollar buyins + unlimited rebuys for one hour and people generally don't like it running too long(plus we like to build the pot with donkey all-ins, whihc is more difficult with a higher starting stack), so the structure I generally use at my home games is:3000 starting chips12 x 2510 x 507 x 1006 x 250 (or 3 x 500)blinds:25-5050-10075-150100-200150-300200-400300-600400-800but, I am planning a single table, 10 person, $75 dollar buyin tourney sometime near christmas with 10000 starting chips, no rebuys, same blind structure, going up every 20 minutes.

If this is what all major tournaments should adopt, we should change FCP to this structure as well.
