Cheap Thieves Rebuild Year One 2017-18

Recommended Posts

Really happy to see F Brett Howden, TB. moved to NYR. We were doubled up with Mitchell Stephens in TB as well and it looks like Howden will have a much better chance to make the NYR than he would TB.

In another move, Chris Bigras who has been a big disappointment in Colorado gets a new opportunity in NYR as well. Unlikely to pan out, but a change can't be a bad thing.

So goalie swap with a 12year old thrown in.   ooops, that sounded bad.

Dude, why no Vegas goalies?

I will do one meat free day

Cheap Thieves Roster Keeper Assets in Order of Value:

26. D Paul Ladue, LA. -3

27. F Jason Pominville, BUF. 0

28. F David Backes, BOS. 0

Joakim Ryan has proven to be a trusted NHL regular and of late he is adding some production to his game. He is an Aho eligible player that will certainly be signed for two more seasons. Nail Yakupov has a higher pricetag than most players on the team and despite being a first overall pick seems to be in the doghouse and not getting more than 10 minutes a game.

Farm Assets Ranked as Most Valuable:

1. F Sebastian Aho, CAR. 2.00

2. F Jonathan Dahlen, VAN. 0.50

3. F Klim Kostin, STL. 2.50

15. F Jesper Boqvist, NJ. 1.50 -1

16. F Antoine Morand, ANA. 1.50 -1

17. F Joni Ikonen, MTL. 1.50 0 -1

18. D Connor Hobbs, WAS. 0.50

19. F David Kase, PHI. 0.50 +1

With more production at the AHL level and some room opening on the depth chart thanks to Brett Howden leaving town, Mitchell Stephens could see some 3rd and 4th line duty in TB next year if he can keep playing at this pace. A case could be made for Dillon Dube moving up and possibly moving Kostin down, but we still believe Kostin has more high end upside and skill.

Both of these lists are complied using several factors for the formula:

1. Skill Level and Progression

2. Salary

3. Age

Hockey News Future Watch Latest Update:

F Logan Brown, OTT. 23rd overall, 1st- Brown actually made the Sens' roster out of camp. He was sent back to Windsor after a month in the NHL, and Ottawa was impressed with his development. Dealt to Kitchener after the world juniors, Brown has size, and the Sens' want him to use it more as he moves to the next level. "He made huge strides over the summer and really committed himself off the ice." Lee said. "That resulted in a very good camp. He sent a message to the coaches and is trending in the right direction."

2016 draft 11th overall (Age 19) Expected Arrival 2018-19

F Colin White, OTT. 32nd overall, 2nd- Injuries have given White an opportunity to play in the NHL. After breaking his wrist blocking a shot in camp, White went down to the AHL and has been used in all situations by coach Kurt Kleinendorst. "His compete level is really good," Lee said. "He knows its pro hockey and he has to get stronger. His hockey sense is great. He's got that grit factor that people don't really appreciate about him, but it's very good. He's one of those guys that will go to the blue paint and get those dirty goals."

2015 draft 21st overall (Age 20) Expected Arrival 2018-19

F Klim Kostin, STL. 50th overall, 3rd- Kostin is a big body who has the potential to play a power forward role. In his first year in North America, the AHL has been an adjustment for the 18 year old, but he shone internationally. "He had a great world juniors," Armstrong said. "He's finding his way in the minors. It's a grind because you are 18 playing against 22 year old men. Maintaining consistency is very important and that's hard with travel. But he's a powerful man. He's a big rig who has skill."

2017 draft 31st overall (Age 18) Expected Arrival 2018-19

F Dominik Simon, PIT. 3rd- Simon's calling card is his ability to play with top players. Jaromir Jagr was his linemate at the 2015 worlds, and he has played on the Pens' top line with Sidney Crosby for significant stretches. Simon can do that because he is skilled enough to play a give-and-go in tight quarters and responsible enough to provide a two-way element. Consistency and size are his drawbacks. "His game has a lot to do with how hard he's competing." Guerin said. "When Dom's competing at his highest level his skill comes through even more."

2015 draft 137th overall (Age 23) Expected Arrival 2018-19

F Jonathan Dahlen, VAN. 66th overall, 4th- Slowed by a bout of mono, he was second in scoring at one point in the Swedish second-tier league. From the top of the circles down to the corners, he has good presence and a knack for getting pucks to the net. He's expected to join Utica when his season ends to get acclimated to the North American game. "He has good, fast hands," Benning said. "And he's good in tight spaces. That's his best asset. His physical strength on the puck needs to improve to win puck battles in the NHL."

2016 draft 42nd overall (Age 20) Expected Arrival 2019-20

F Dillon Dube, CAL.-87th overall, 4th- Getting on the stage is one thing. Excelling in that situation is another. Dube's gold medal effort at the WJC can help him take the next step. "It's not only winning, its being a captain, a leader, having a critical role there, and performing." Treliving said. Dube has a high hockey IQ, is an excellent skater and has a finisher's touch, but his play in Buffalo was more than offense. It included elements needed to make the NHL- consistency, puck retrieval defensive awareness.

2016 drafted 56th overall (Age 19) Expected Arrival: 2019-20

F Vitaly Abramov, CLB. 4th- 'The Meteor Man' is blazing towards another 100-point season in the QMJHL His ability to score and create plays isn't up for debate. The concern lies with his size. What makes Abramov so dominant in junior is his fearlessness, the way he crashes the net like a big man. Can he play that same way against the behemoths on the NHL? He dominated at the prospects tournament in Traverse City, but faded at the Blue Jackets' main camp in the pre-season. It's a hurdle he'll have to clear.

2016 draft 65th overall (Age 19) Expected Arrival 2019-20

F Roope Hintz, DAL. 5th- A versatile player, Hintz has seen time at left wing and center in his rookie AHL season and has grabbed a big role on the Texas Stars. While he's slated for at least one more year in the minors, the Stars like what they have seen. "It's been a great year for him." Nill said. "He's transitioning to North America and a different ice surface." Hintz will likely have to break into the NHL on the wing but, as the Stars have shown with players like Devin Shore and Mattias Janmark, having experience at both positions can be an advantage."

2015 draft 49th overall (Age 21) Expected Arrival 2019-20

F Jaret-Anderson Dolan, LAK. 91st overall, 3rd- Anderson-Dolan has quickness and skill, but his most impressive trait might be his mental makeup. He has a positive attitude and a strong worth ethic, and can play center or left wing. The Calgary native doesn't have great size, but he possesses other gifts. He's confident, poised, and brings a quickness to everything he does. "Jaret has that speed that is so prominent in today's NHL," Emerson said. "He plays with pace, and is always very conscientious, always playing a full 200 feet."

2017 draft 41st overall (Age 18) Expected Arrival 2020-21

F Jesper Boqvist, NJ. 3rd- Boqvist missed the first two months of the season with a wrist injury, slowing his progress, though he came back in Decemberand was added to Sweden's roster for the WJC. "His world juniors were OK," Fitzgerald said. "It was timing and some rust in his game. He's playing well now." Boqvist has been used as a winger, but the Devils see him as a center because of his speed, peripheral vision, and the way he distributes the puck. He must improve defensively to play the two way game.

2017 draft 36th overall (Age 19) Expected Arrival 2020-21

F Brett Howden, NYR. 6th- Kills penalties, wins faceoffs, chips in offensively and his skating has come along.

2016 draft 27th overall (Age 19)

F Mitchell Stephens, TB. 6th- Good penalty killer, good on faceoffs, a 200 foot game, and he is creating offense.

2015 draft 33rd overall (Age 21)

F Kole Lind, VAN. 6th- Complete package. Good shot and better playmaker. Also has an edge to his game.

2017 draft 33rd overall (Age 19)

F Joni Ikonen, MTL. 6th- His play at the WJC was a disappointment, and his return to Finland has backfired.

2017 draft 58th overall (Age 18)

F Jayce Hawryluk, FLA. 7th- Agitator with good hands can complement skill guys. Injuries have set him back.

2014 draft 32nd overall (Age 22)

F Jeremy Bracco, TOR. 7th- Nifty scorer slowly adjusting to pros. Frequent healthy scratch. Improved in New Year.

2015 draft 61st overall (Age 20)

F Jason Robertson, DAL. 9th- Unconventional offensive player finds ways to put the puck in the net.

2017 draft 39th overall (Age 18)

F Antoine Morand, ANA. 9th- Playmaker hasn't seen spike in offense on a well-balanced 'Q' contender.

2017 drafted 60th overall (Age 19)

D Connor Hobbs, WAS. 4th- Hobbs, a two-way defender with a physical edge, showcased high upside in a breakout WHL season with 31 goals. What sets him apart is his shot, which Maloney describes as "special."The Caps envision Hobbs manning the point on the power play. For now, though, they are working on the basics after he missed several weeks with a broken wrist. "Moving the puck quickly, and getting back, moving his feet, those first three strides, getting back on the retrievals, those are the things we're preaching." Mann said.

2015 draft 143rd overall (Age 21) 2019-20

D Sebastian Aho, NYI. 5th- Aho has already logged some time with the big club due to a myriad of injuries sustained by the teams defense corps. And he is making the most of the opportunity. "He's efficient in the way he plays the puck," Cairns said. "He doesn't shy away from going to the boards or the tough areas and battling." The transition from the larger European ice surface to the smaller North American rink hasn't posed much of a challenge for Aho, which speaks to his skating and his ability to quickly adapt.

2017 draft 139th overall (Age 22) Expected Arrival 2019-20

D Ian Mitchell, CHI. 89th overall, 3rd- Mitchell jumped into a key role as a freshman for the defending NCAA champion Pioneers, including manning the point on the power play. He skates well and reads the ice to make quick, smart passes. Mitchell has to improve his strength, but he battles for loose pucks and plays a strong positional game. "He's become a better defender and quarterbacks our power play with confidence," says Denver coach Jim Montgomery. One quibble: Mitchell needs to get more shots through to the net.

2017 draft 57th overall (Age 19) Expected Arrival 2020-21

D Alexandre Carrier, NAS. 8th- Needs to improve speed slightly in order to make the jump to the NHL.

2015 draft 151st (Age 21)

We have a trade to announce that will bolster a future dynasty:

Cheap Thieves trade $5.00 in 2018-19

for

PK Dealers trade $5.00 in 2023-24

Should we maybe discuss a limit on these types of trades? Is there a rule to stop two GMs from trading $40 five years apart to give each huge bankrolls to take a run?

there are already minimum and maximum amounts of cash that teams can have to start the season to sign their team and use at the draft and in season minimum and maximum salary caps for their rosters.

over under on Cheap Thieves win PLUS Vegas Golden Knights wins:

55.5 is the line I have set..

That's an easy over. I won 16 games last year and should win over 20 this year. That means Vegas needs to win just 35 games. Your line is way off. My team will still be awful, but I will have Sebastian Aho and Nolan Patrick playing from the start of the season which has to be good for at least 5 wins.

I think its a good line, Ill stick by this one..

I believe that the Knights will regress this year. I saw one betting line had them over/under 101.5 pts. Thats roughly in the 43-45 win range. I am obviously not as bullish on the team. I have been wrong several times, but I put them around 34-36 wins. At the highest of that range the Thieves would need to win exactly 20 games to make this go over. Last year your team if you remember ran above expectation in the beginning with you getting some "lucky" wins. I expect your team in this rebuilding year will win 15 games. This would give me a good cushion of 5 games on the bet..
