Some lighthearted talk here plus this will make sure that I can read this again sometime as it's a good story, at least for me. If it wasnt for posting all those apartment stories I would forget almos

I debated posting this, because I might be overdoing this topic this week, but I made a sort of personal promise to myself that I am going to promote more positivity and try to never be negative or pu

Danny.... Thats a great attitude to have, and you will be amazed at the progress Owen can make with that kind of attitude and persistence on your part. On Feb 4, 2003, the diagnosis I got was that

Serge, I hope any family you may still have in Turkey are okay. Crazy stuff!

We have a lot of friends. Not much family. It's crazy stuff going on.

Turkey is such a beautiful country and had the potential to be a world superpower. But they are messed up.

Anyone following the NSA bullshit?

Not really...I've been under the assumption for a decade that anything you say or do online or on a cell phone is tracked and monitored, so finding out I'm definitively correct is pretty anti-climactic. It's not that I don't care, I just don't think anyone cares that I care.

Well sales of 1984 are way up as is the use of George Orwell avatar pictures

The reality is that Big Data exists and we all need to realize that.

Metro the grocery store knows exactly what I buy from them and I'm fine with that since they send me coupons for stuff that I actually use.

That's a defeatist attitude.

Sorry, but I value my right to privacy more than 25¢ off whole wheat bread.

A couple of years ago in the middle of the Iraq War II in the midst of the double-speak about the existence WMDs, "victory achieved", etc, etc I made the observation that we haven't used 1984 has a cautionary tale but rather a how-to manual :(

Looks like it's only has gotten more extreme since then.

i heard that places like Target will send you coupons for baby stuff if you haven't bought tampons in a while. Everyone is tracked some way or another.

I read the full breakdown of backstory. The idea is that consumers only really change their shopping habits a few times in their lives -- the birth of a first child means that people go from hopping between multiple shops and go to one megastore (like Target / wallmart /etc). I believe they were tracking people through the use of loyal cards.

More than stopping using tampons but they also noted people going to non-fragranced hand creams and a bunch of other factors. The system got so scary good at predicting that it triggered a maternity coupon pack to a 16-year old girl... Dad flipped out but maned up an apologized a week later when she told him that she had gotten knocked up (!).

So after that they started being a little less obvious about their targeting. eg: if the maternity coupons were triggered they would also throw in one for a riding lawn mower or something else irrelevant.

Loyalty cards are in many cases all about getting data on their customers so that they can target market to them.

I'm fully aware that Metro knows every item I purchase and can connect that through my Air Miles card to my real name, address and e-mail address. They tailor their marketing to me and I end up gaining at least $100 per year in extra value. I choose to trade that information for the benefits but I understand that it can make a lot of people very uneasy. The key thing is that I'm aware that I'm being tracked in such detail.

Maybe I'm naive but why would I care if the government knows what I'm saying online, what I'm spending money on, etc?

To my knowledge, I'm doing nothing suspect, nothing illegal. I don't know why I should "value my privacy" so much.

It's not like it's intrusive. Have you ever really felt abused over it? Felt like you'd been taken advantage of?

I don't know.

Bob addresses this well - I choose to have Air Miles, loyalty cards, etc. I choose to give the retail employee my postal code when she asks because I'm fine with being tracked. I signed up for it. That's a big gap to "the government is using secret courts to require private corporations to give them information on completely innocent people, with no disclosure that you are being tracked or that the laws even exist. Oh, and the companies have to lie about it if anyone asks."

President Obama could conscript 100 minority children from across the United States, line them up, and shoot them in the face with a bazooka, and that would be less Constitutionally inappropriate than this NSA stuff.

Read Dale's article. Your opinion is one of someone who has lived their whole life in a very sheltered environment.

Not to get all Godwin on you, but I'm guessing the Jews in the 1930s and Japanese in the early 1900s and Syrians right now and a billion other people weren't doing anything wrong when the goverment having information about them didn't work out so well.
