Boston Marathon Bombing

Recommended Posts

6 thousand years is pretty much instantaneous in geological terms.

I'm really sad this thread has devolved into a religious discussion instead of how people suck, capitol punishment or even bigfoot.

I usually think of the sick thread first, and go there first. Then I go to twitter, cnn, 4bb, and then usually back to the sick thread, which might be finished loading.

Humans are the worst.

I'm pretty sure that the response to the marathon bombing vs the response to the Texas explosion are vastly different because one was an accident, and the other was purposeful.

The thread did get hijacked, cause no one reads the religion one anymore.

Couldnt God exist, with false fables?

Absolutely. I have no problem with belief in God. I have a problem with religion and/or people acting on their belief in ways that effect others.

Most soup is flat nasty so, yeah.

Interesting turn this thread took. You all are an odd bunch. I like it.

I avoid religious discourse though. I like the concept. Some of the themes. Find the general execution piss poor. Mostly, I just like to live and let live, and let the chips fall where they may.

When it comes to dealing with God, Id rather have some idea where the chips are falling.

Count me in that bucket as well, when I have any idea I will be the first to share it. Until then the process of elimination is never ending.

I'm intrigued - what do you mean?

He posted he doesnt like religious discourse. He just ignores it and wat will be will be,When it comes to a possible afterlife, I want to hear as much as possible, and not just hope for the best.

That doesn't effect others unless they choose to be effected by it. Logic continues to confound you.

So society doesn't benefit from groups helping the poor?

I think the word logic has a different meaning then you think it has.

Unless you think that nothing that makes society better matters, in which case I see your point, I just disagree.

I continue to be intrigued? Do you explore different religions? Have you found one (or a combination) that you think is correct?

Is this a Pascal's wager decision, or do you have other reasons for believing in an afterlife?

If you do believe there is an afterlife, how do you envision it - do people go to some type of heaven/hell, do some people just not get one? What proportion (approximate!) of people either get an afterlife (if not everyone does), or get a happy one (if everyone gets something) - in your mind, is it "very difficult" (i.e. only the very pious), or is a general life of being "good" (whatever that means) sufficient?

I have no judgment on this, just curious to learn more about a belief system that varies so differently from mine. Personally, I don't think there is anything after you're in the ground, nothing good or bad, no immortal soul in our bodies, etc. But that's my opinion only, and I don't begrudge others who feel differently. It's unknowable and some of the smartest people I know have different opinions on it than me.

I agree. Basically I don't care much what people believe as long as they don't hurt others. But to an extent beliefs do matter, and some are harmful which was the point I tried to make here recently. Desires are the only reason for action that exist. Belief plus desire results in (intentional) action. We have many good and strong reasons to attempt to thwart the desires of those that believe and act on many religious claims such as teaching creationism which hurts children and our country. Or flying planes into building. Of in some cases the child abuse that religon can perpetrate etc.. Basically, morality is concerned with promoting or discouraging desires themselves. There are no intrinsic values that many people claim.

If I was positive about any particular faith or religion, I would shout it from the rooftops. Unfortunately, I have no idea wat is true and wat isnt. I just believe in God, and as a christian believe Christ was divine. However I have b=no idea if God is male, female, a combination of both or neither.Idont believe in hell per se, that is a place of insane torture for eternity. But, I believe there is some form of punishment for the truly evil. And Ill leave it to God, to define truly evil.

I have to believe in some sort of afterlife. Whether it is going to a place, or reincarnation

Watever happens I do believe God is fair. Say for example that christianity is true, isn it really fair for someone raised in a contrary faith to be judged the same as one who is raised in a christian family? Maybe as one philosopher once said, "There are many mountain tops and they are all reaching for the stars".

Interesting, thanks for sharing. Why do you "have" to believe in some sort of afterlife?

I really think that if there was no afterlife, no ultimate consequense to actions, then this would be a brutal world world to live in.

Are you saying that human beings, if left unchecked by religious consequence, if left to their own devices, would behave like animals, would kill/rape/steal/lust, so as to be indistinguishable from beasts?

Like Rwanda?

Mao's China?

Stalin's Russia?

Pol Pot's Cambodia?

Hitler's camps?

The Massacre of the Latins in the 12th century?

The Cyprus Massacre in the 16th century?

The Tripolotsa Massacre?

The Massacre of Praga?

Chios?

Elphinistone's Army?

Armenian Massacre in the 19th century?

Yea, I would say without a healthy fear of consequences for their actions, the world would be a much much worse place.
