David Frum: Canada The Best-governed Country In The World

Recommended Posts

It seems historical context is the thing lacking most from the GOP platform. Party of Eisenhower it is not. Hell, it's barely Reagan's party anymore.

So the republican party has an identity crisis?

Pretty sure this is just a democrat response to getting their clocks cleaned in the midterm election.

For the last 2 years its been non-stop: "The Rs are a party about to fail if they don't figure out how to be more centrist"

The truth is that we are an actual big tent ( Hello Ronald ) and have differences of opinion on issues. But the over all belief that a larger government in need of more and more money is bad.

This is hilarious to me but probably less so to all the RINOs out there. Justice Roberts had a difference of opinion once and then the next day every conservative drove over his body with a giant rhetorical bus. And you accuse me of being in make believe land. Just wow. Just make sure you meet 8 of the 10 criteria on the GOP purity pledge or YOU COULD BE NEXT.

LOL your best example is a judge changing the argument for one side in order to side with them to pass Obama care?

Yea...that's an example of Republican exclusionary attitudes, disagrement over something that 4 Supreme Court Justices also disagreed with.

Next you'll tell me we are ready to fail because of our inability to agree on Ginger or Mary Ann?

It's Mary Ann all day

Lol, the GOP is anything but a big tent at the moment. Sure, gays are allowed to vote GOP, but if they want equal rights, **** them because THE BIBLE.

The poor are allowed into the party too, as long as they quit freeloading off the government and agree to getting rid of Medicare (Ryan's plan) and social safety nets to pay for a stronger military.

Hey Women! Come vote GOP! And know that you're not allowed birth control. Or abortions to save your life. Don't expect protections for equal pay either - if you just fought as hard as men did, you'd have them already.

And Muslims...well, **** those guys too. No mosques anywhere!

Am I missing anything? Feel free to tell me how the GOP is fighting for these people...I'd love to stand corrected.

I'm aware that's a simplistic argument. I was being dramatic, though unfortunately accurate, in relaying popular GOP Leader lines that a quick Google search can confirm. And if you don't think the public is taking these ridiculous arguments as fact, you should spend a week working on a campaign.

Woman aren't allowed birth control?

Be honest..you were on a roll, got to the war on women rhetoric and got stuck, so you through in that silly argument hoping it wouldn't get noticed?

Muslims aren't allowed to have mosques? Yea, that was in the convention platform.

In fact the republican party only supports rich white men. Anyone else is a lacky slave who will be put under the boot as soon as we gain control!

If you want the government to save you, you better vote democrat! The party of freedom! FORWARD!

That would explain why the republican party only garners 1% of the vote every election...the top 1%

You're right man - social issues, Christianity, and lying don't work at all.

Ann Romney told a group of Latino voters that they just had to get past their own biases so they could vote Repiblican. It is hard to understand why the GOP is getting crushed in the minority vote with a pitch line that and the ones on here.

You should tell black people that if they were smarter (like whites!) they'd understand why they being done bad.

Given the way the math seems to be breaking down, they (R's) need to win them (Hispanics) or else the Republican Party is done for a generation or two.

Really, they should win Hispanics since a lot of their (Hispanic) values dovetail with conservative principles.

They are deeply family oriented, religious, very hard workers, believe in principles of self sufficiency and upward mobility. As minorities go, they are very much the anti-Negro. Illegal Mexicans live all around me in my neighborhood and I have no problem with them whatsoever, to the point that on the basis of what I've seen, I would absolutely consider going and living in Mexico (since I'm pretty much already there)

The downside is that they're usually gigantic shitheads when they're young- especially the browner ones concentrated in urban areas- so Whitey McWhitebob of the Republican base lashes out against THE ILLEGAL IMMIGRANTS KILLING 'MERIKA!!!!!!!!!! and winds up allienating a huge potential political ally. This combined with the hugely compelling narrative of racial victomology eminating from the left, what you wind up with are all but the whitest Hispanics voting for the Democrats like a good little minority should.

The Republicans need to get on the ball with this shit.

Wedge politics.

Start with the concept that if they don't start voting Republican, liberals will see to it that the black hordes move into their neighborhoods first.

You think they're cool with that because they both qualify for Affirmative Action?

They hate them worse than we do.

Pretty sure you are asking the republican party to actually become the racist party the liberals accuse us of being.

So that means we are in fact not racist since we don't do these things. Which interestingly enough proves that they are wrong again.

Although pretty much everything proves them wrong; facts, polls, data, science, birdseed..

I always know BG is desperately reaching when the word "science" appears in his post sans irony.

Amscray, I agree as a resident of Miami but I doubt the GOP's ability to not alienate minorities. It's what they do.

I think your generalization of the Mexican-American population is flawed.

A quick Google search pulled up this article on gay marriage: http://www.huffingto..._n_1658917.html

And I've read numerous other articles over the months that while they're religious, they tend to be moderate-liberal on social issues. The major issue they have with the GOP is that they keep hearing from GOP leaders and talking heads about how worthless they are in the US and should be deported immediately. A few of Romney's ever-changing stances on the issues have echoed the same sentiments.

I think until the GOP changes their views on immigration reform, they're going to lose more and more of the latino vote. Social issues aren't going to sway these voters, especially with the Dems promoting amnesty/temp citizenship/letting their kids stay. There's a reason Dems are making such massive pushes to talk to them in Texas - there's a good chance it becomes a battleground state in 8ish years with the population shifts.
