Dear Ouch 8-s

Oh beejesus.I found a device manager disc that came with the computor but now my CD-ROM drive won't open. I click it and hear it make an attempt to open, but then nothing. Dear Ouch, am I screwed?
There should be a little hole on the drive. Take a paperclip and poke it and it will open the tray.

turn off the computer. straighten out a paperclip and shove it into the hole in the front of the cd drive. this will manually (begin to) open the tray. remove the disc that is stuck in there and rejoice at having found it again after looking (you thought) everywhere for it.

I call that my beer holder.Heres what you do..Get a screw driver or Ive found a tweezers works well too. Now press the button and when you hear it trying to open, jam the screwdriver or tweezers the gap and pry the sucker open.Youre welcome.

NTFS? Unless you have a good reason to use FAT32, don't.And then don't worry about defragging, except maybe once a year.Defragging even on FAT32 is a waste of time, usually. Which Windows are you using and how much Memory do you have?
I would add to this, Windows Degrag is relatively useless. It seems to not do much. Go to download.com and search on PerfectDisk. It's free to try for 30 days, and some reasonable amount to purchase. It does a full defrag, including system data if necessary, and does free space consolidation. It also packs rarely used files together, so that you are less likely to get so much fragmentation in the future. You can play with the settings to see which ones give you the best results. If Windows Defrag is a Volkswagen Jetta, PerfectDisk is a Ferrari.

Okay couldn't get the drive open but went to Dell and found an audio driver for the computer and it works great! Then I went back and re-read that you guys said to "turn the computer off" before using the paperclip and Lolli's plier method and after a minute of unjamming what I made worse I got it open and found a virus disc from a while back. So, basically, Golly Gee Ouch you're such an awesome amazing genius!here's hoping he'll get caught up in praise and forget about the reach around

I almost bought a Lisa a few hundred years ago, but Apple decided to cut the Lisa in half and make the MAC. I lost all respect for them ever since.

Dear Ouch,I'm not totally sure about this whole comptuer problem because it's with my gf's computer. She's got an HP laptop and some times when she tries to hibernate it, it just sits on the hibernation screen and doesn't do anything. Other times it will hibernate. Thanks.

Ouch/Wang/JJJ/Dog/JesusChrist/Ghandi/Hitler/Whoever else you are:I bought and installed a game from Yahoo Games! the other day and every time I double click on the icon on my desktop my Windows Vista says that the program has stopped running and asks me if I want to search for an online solution.I can get the game to run by going to the file location and reinstalling the entire packet using the installation wizard it came with but I'm tired of having to do this every time. Every time I do this I let it reinstall over the top of the old install in hopes that it will some day overwrite whatever seems to be the problem. It doesn't.So, I have 2 questions.1. What the fuck is up with my game not running without re-running the installation wizard every time?and 2. What the fuck is up with Yahoo Games! using the stupid exclamation mark as a part of their name?

Unfortunately, I was dead serious. If you only knew how computer illiterate I really am, it would just floor you.Ouch asked me a couple weeks ago if I had Winamp downloaded on my laptop and I had to ask him where to look to find out. Im sure if I could have seen his face he would have been shaking his head in disgust at me. He's teaching me geek, though, so pretty soon Im going to rule the internet. Or at least be able to check my email and watch a video simultaeneously. <<<< I dont think I spelled that right.

some computers just don't like to hibernate. it usually is due to a device driver that won't agree with window's hibernation command. if you want to test, you can unplug as many things (esp USB devices) or disable them via the device manager, and see if that makes a difference.it may not.

vista....1) my first guess is that it is a User Control issue, where yahoo is trying to install the game and/or write to somewhere that vista doesn't think it should be allowed to. so it can't save your installation in some way. you could try and fix this by logging into an admin account and installing from there, or (if vista is like xp) using Run As to install it as an admin. you may also need to PLAY it as an admin, so Run As may be the better fix. UAC is supposed to fix this in vista i think but people hate it...2) it should be outlawed, along with all the other cute caPItalS in wEIrd SpoTs and numbers as letters in names. I h8 that. and it's Yahoo! Games. Yahoo is indeed very exciting.

Ouch, you know the text that pops up when you put your mouse over an xkcd comic, or a dinosaur comic? Well when I put my mouse over the image, if the popup is too long it gets cut off, and I have to right click and choose properties to read the whole thing. What about:config option in firefox do I change to stop this "cutting off" behavior so I can view the whole text in the the little pop up box?Edit: Never mind, theres no option for it, but there is an add on. Hopefully they'll fix it soon.Edit 2: Just read they've fixed it in an alpha so it should be fixed soon. Don't mind my musings I'm just delirious with tiredness.Edit 3: look a pretty screen shot showing it fixed. Appreciate at it, because it took me 10 minutes to work out how to do a screen shot with the image title showing.LongTitle.png

online is bad idea IMO, i don't trust other people to keep my stuff safe if i can do it myself.external HD is a fine solution, if it will not be plugged in all the time. if it is, it will wear out, but if you only plug it in when you need it, no problem. remember that just because it's an external drive doesn't make it durable (esp if it uses a 3.5 inch drive), so don't bang it around, etc. also, lets keep those reacharounds coming, people.
So, if I take all of my ITunage and put it on an external HD, I should be ok, as long as, I don't plug it in all the time?
No, but I currently have a moral objection to Western Digital.

Yes. Beware of the intention to back up regularly.
Made in China?
No, they recently released an external drive that has some Digital Rights Management (DRM) built in and will not share any music, videos, etc over a network. It can be easily circumvented, but I refuse to buy a HD that won't let me share as I want to.

Okay, so I am going to try to learn how to program. What language should I start in? I have heard that C++ is good because it gives you the basics to start to write in any language. Is there any truth to this statement? I downloaded X-Code for Mac and I guess you can write in any language or it supports quite a few of the languages.Thanks.
