I was hoping that link would have some explanations or discussion about the meaning of the movie. I saw only one post about it, but it was pretty good (despite the annoying overuse of the ellipse), so I'll copy it here.

As for the ending... guess you got to have circled the sun a few years to get it.. or have come to a realization about life. People are always preachin karma.. if'n you're a baddin.. karma will be givin you your just deserts. Karma is like an obsession. Bullshit. I've seen the kindest finest human beings have the worst luck at every turn in their life.. while the evilest monsters struttin on two legs can walk thru fire with out singin a hair. And it's getting to be a lot more common than when I was younger.... just like the sheriff was talkin about in the beginning of this film. Somethin this movie speaks on from beginning to end. Shit just happens... but it's seems to be happening more and more.. and the best a person can do... is like what the old sheriff in the wheelchair said about the man that shot him... you just got to keep movin on. Evil ain't never going away.. and you can obsess about it (like wanting that big ol slam bang blow em up hollywood ending) having it take over your life.. or you can tend to living your life. But it ain't just an either/or flip of the coin decision... it's your choice among many choices. "You don't have to do this". Yep.. good movie about being corralled by obsessions.Best I can explain it at the moment.

Questions about the film. Maybe you can make me understand why I 'missed' it.

How does the main character return with the water for a guy most definately dead, after being about as cold as cold can be on his first meeting. Other than it needs to happen to put Suger on his trail. Is this lazy writing or are we supposed to like the guy with the morals of an opportunist?Okay so the world has become tough, and the old ways don't work. Why is Tommy Lee Jones needed in this movie since this narration can easily be done through any of a number of casual comments. Take out Tommy Lee and the movie is the same? yes or no ( I love Tommy Lee Jones )Sugar was sent to retrieve the money by the guy in the office, then goes rouge and kills his contacts. So his character is willing to change his 'code' when the oportunity of $2million presents itself. But then we are suppose to believe that he follows his 'code' all the way to the point of finding and 'flipping' a coin for the wife's life for no other reason than he made a 'promise'. So Mr. ultimate evil with a driving force that cannot be swerved, starts the movie changing his motive/character.Getting a random car crash at the end is suppose to show that life happens? Even to bad people? Or is the universe not willing to allow unstoppable evil to go unpunished?

Word for word I have the same questions. I stepped out of the theater and said to my fiance,

wtf was tommy lee jones needed for?

Also, towards the end of the movie I saw 3 different couples walk out and two girls next to me in my row were passed out sleeping. I know for a fact I'm in the minority but I think I was expecting something different and really didn't care for it. I know I probably would have to watch it a second time but it's just too slow of a movie to do so.

Hm, I haven't heard many complaints of it being slow. I know by the previews it may have looked like a fast-paced thriller, but if you were at all familiar with the Coen brothers work you wouldn't have thought this. Fargo is often cited as their best work and is considered a thriller, but is by no means fast-paced.

BG and Gov... you guys are completely missing the point. This movie is about life... not everything being wrapped up nicely with Tommy Lee Jones standing on top of a hill at the end with a girl in each arm and everyone else dead. In real life, Tommy Lee Jones is not only there, but he is VITAL!

Ok, so I just got back from watching it and I'll admit that it was a good ending but there are a few parts which I don't understand. Is this the style of the directors and/or writers?Spoiler warning!

Why was "Sugar" even caught in the first place when he went to jail? You'd think that he would have just killed the cop on the side of the road. Also, I hate not knowing if the wife was killed. I think he killed her because he checked his boots on his way out, but I might be wrong here. Also, why not explain what happened to the money? Also, I think it would have been great if "Sugar" just gets in the accident and dies. Because everything in his life is precise and deliberate I think his death should have been some random act. Oh yeah, how f*ucking stupid of Llewelyn to go back and take water to the guy... Who cares take the money and get out of the country... Immediately

You're right, he checked his boots for blood.

Anyways, that was one of the best movies ive ever seen.

so i finally just saw this. it was really good.im surprised people dont know why tommy lee jones was in the movie considering the movie was about his character.the scene with chigurh in the gas station and the one near the end when he is in the wifes room are both some of the best scenes in movie history

I thought it was pretty mediocre. Some scenes were great, but I found alot of the movie boring and I didnt really care one way or another about any of the characters.

Well, at least we know what to do with your future reviews.

I just saw this yesterday. I thought it was pretty good. A lot of the scenes were awesome, but the movie was kind of slow at times. Can someone tell me what Tommy Lee Jones was saying at the end of the movie?I did not expect the movie to end then, so i lost focus some. I was also distracted because this old couple walked in the theater as he was talking and I was thinking "how the hell could you be 2 hours late to a movie?" It was also a really small theater, like 75 seats, so you couldn't miss them.

it related to the title of the movie, which brought it together nicely. someone can probably explain it better than me but the first dream he mentions relates to the money being lost by moss. the second mentions how he is older than his father ever was and how it was hard country for old men or something. eh, someone else should answer this.

Possible spoiler so..

The dream he described involved meeting is father on a path - I believe they are both on horses. His father goes up ahead to prepare a camp, start a fire the sheriff we be able to see in the distance. Clearly its a dream about his fear death, coming in the too-near future.

This post is basically incomprehensible.

I have to admit that I'm surprised that it beat There Will Be Blood, not because it didn't deserve too, but because it seems that once momentum for a movie starts, as is the case for Blood, then it benefits from a huge windfall of awards. Nice job Coens! Well deserved. I would love to see this win the Oscar over Blood, but that's not going to happen, I'm afraid.

Okay so I just saw this movie over the weekend. I am going to assume that most people reading this have already seen the movie but in the event that someone hasn't i will say:***Spoiler Warning***I loved the movie all the way until the part where we find lewellen (sp) dead in the El Paso hotel. Was I the only one who was waiting for a final scene between him and chugah (again sp)? It seems like they were building the movie up to the point where there was going to be some dramatic type showdown ala "Way of the Gun" only to just have him killed by the mexican gang. Other than that I agree with others in the fact that he should have never even gone to bring the guy any water. There still would have been a way to get chugah on his trail by the fact that there was the homing device in the money. As far as favorite scenes, there were just so many but the one with the old guy in the gas station was super classic as well as all the Tommy Jones scenes. The ending scene with the wife is golden and yes she is dead to all those who couldn't figure out that he was checking for blood on the bottom of his shoes. I just love the line when chugah says that everyone says the same thing and she asks what they say and he says so non chalantly they say I don't have to do this. Just great.I need to see it again but will probably wait for the DVD as it comes out in the middle of March.

I think this is what a lot of people had a problem with. People went in expecting a thriller, with a typical ending. When they didn't get that they freaked. I recommend watching it again and paying attention to pretty much everything Tommy Lee Jones says, the movie will make a lot more sense.

Well I didn't really have a problem with the ending, I just thought that they were building the entire movie up to the point where there was going to be a major confrontation between the two. I mean if you go back to the telephone convo they have and lewellen tells chugah that he is "going to make him a special project" and with all the talk of lewellen being a vietnam vet it seems they were leading you to a major confrontation. and then it's like he talks to the girl by the pool and then He's dead with nothing more to talk about. I like the ending with the wife and chugah walking away but I was thinking that the movie was setting you up for something and then doesn't deliver on that set up.JMO on the film. Like I said I loved the film and I loved Tommy Lee Jones in it, but it does leave you feeling like you should have at least saw the conflict between lewellen and the mexicans at the very least.

You guys are all missing the point of the movie. The Coens always make movies about fate/karma/good vs. evil/ whatever.... The movie is supposed to show you that things just happen, and more often than not, they don't happen like you want them to. Sometimes... evil wins.
