I was playing in a Stars tourney really early on at which point I really had to go to the bathroom (damn that tacobell!), so I sat out a good 5 or 6 hands. But, while I was in the bathroom, I was reading my copy of Harrington on Hold Em, thus increasing my poker knowledge and advantage in this tourney. What ya guys think?

Good question. I'm going to have to go with -ev. In a tournament, every hand is extremely important. Missing up to six hands in a row could mean missing several opportunities to steal blinds and it could mean missing some huge hands which could double you up. In a tournament, any hand could be make or break. Missing a hand could mean missing that one opportunity where everything came together perfectly to win you a big pot. If you're not getting ahead in a tourney then you're falling behind.Though the knowledge gained from reading HOH is indeed valuable, I would imagine that the limited information gained within a period of a few minutes does not compensate for the loss you incurred by not playing hands (both in terms of blinds and antes as well as in chances to win big hands).Any other brilliant questions?

Maybe he missed the hand where he was going to get cold decked or sucked out on for his stack. Then its very +ev.
Aren't you saying it's +ev to pass up on a +ev situation if ultimately you would have lost, which is -ev?I'm confoosed.

No, this makes no sense and goes directly against the definition of an "expectation value." Only if he were going to be cold decked the majority of the time would this be a -ev situation, in which case it couldn't be a cold deck by definition (since it would be the norm). It would only be -ev if he were a worse player than everybody else and on average he lost money in a given hand. If he's a winning player, than it's +ev to see hands.

I'm sure this is the wrong way to do this but I'm playing my first online tournament tonight on Poker Stars. It's a Canadian freeroll, and the top 100 advance to round 2. Grand prize is a seat at the WSOP for 07. Although that may be wishful thinking, advancing to round 2 is the goal. Any fellow FCP'ers have any advice? Thanks in advance.

Tight aggressive! That is the single most basic good advice you can give.

I once came running into the room with a second left when i had KK in a MTT, i missed it and it folded me. 1 of the players pushed all in, another guy called. and they showed A,9 and QQ. the guy spiked an A.and i remember because It actually saved me since the guy with the A was a huge donk call station and would have 100% called my raise

Thanks for the advice guys, I webt broke with 1,000 left, when I had pocket AA. he caught a club on the river for an ace high club flush. What do you do? I got my money in with the best hand but unfortunetly it wasn't good enough. That's poker I guess. thanks for the advice though. Later

judging from all we know about you, I'd say the more you sit out the better.Reading HoH probably meant nothing for you.Stare at shiny objects next time, if like you prefer.

LOL - I was going to post that reading HOH would definitely be - EV if you have luck like me. And then you go and post that your bullets got cracked. I think I am going to christen this phenomena (sp?) as the Action Dan Curse.I busted out in 32 straight tourneys after I read HOH 1 and 2 and became a "better" player. Each time I was at least a 60/40 favorite when the money went in. I have never had the same appetite for the game since that sick run.So again - def -EV!edit - oops confused OP and cracked AA dude. Oh well I still think the curse holds...
