To Deal Or Not To Deal....

Recommended Posts

Well while we are on the topics of dealing, tips, etc, etc, thought I would pop the question to those dealers out there......would you recommend it? Obviously it means you cant play much (if any) poker (or anything) in casinos, but hows the money? Do most places place you on the higher limit tables as you gain experience? I would assume answer is yes, but need to check. Whats involved in becoming a dealer? Is it easy to get jobs places? For me, I would think its a bit of an advantage, because being Canadian the closest Casino for me is Niagara, so I should be able to deal, drive over the border and head to any casino near by........just wondering.....is it worth it?

From what I've heard you have to go to a school most of the time but what I'm wondering is why you wouldn't be allowed to play when you weren't working?
I bartended/dealt at a casino and we were not allowed to play there. But I know rsmbox plays at the casino he works at. (I believe he does anyway) But I have heard and experienced some casinos don't allow you to play where you work. To the OP. From everything I've heard they would like you to have attended a school. Then you usually have to audition. I believe most casinos have certain days for auditions. You just have to call around and ask.

i deal in minnesota and for the most part u cant u play where u work except, canterbury which is are only real card room in the state, morton havent been there and northern lights which is the only indian own casino i know where u can play and work... um are biggest games are either 30-60 or 5-60 in minnesota the most a player can put in a pot in one betting round is three bills. honestly the lower limit games are the most profitable. People who play for recreation are the best tippers.

From my experience with Indian casinos in California, poker dealers are allowed to play poker at the casino in which they deal. However, poker dealers are not allowed to play table games in the same casino in which they deal.

While staying at the Venetian recently, I played with no less than 3 employees of their poker room. One a dealer, one working in the cashier cage, and a tournament director. There was also a young lady who dealt at another Vegas casino who played with us.

just warning you, I don't know about niagara, but I deal in ALberta, and we don't get to keep our own tips. They are pooled and split evenly amongst all dealers, including those on the floor.

I'm in a dealing school in Vegas currently. Inexpensive way to make a nice living. If you enjoy dealing poker then you should definitely look into it. If you have connections at a casino that would be even better for you. Last night I played the Caesar's tourney with a few dealers that had been on shift the last time I played there. So in Vegas I guess you can play where you work if you're off the clock.

Hey. I was dealing at Casino Niagara last summer. I only did it for 4 months, but I liked it. I went and took a course at Winning Touch Casino Gaming School to get training for the job. The courses and the people there are great. Robby's a really funny guy as long as you can take his jokes without getting offended. LOL. I took the blackjack and the hold'em courses there. You won't get hired if you can't pass a table test in at least 2 games. I enjoyed my summer working at Casino Niagara, but you won't be able to deal only hold'em if that's what you wanted. Also, you won't keep your own tips. Tokes will be split up and added to your paycheck. Anyways, if you do end up trying to get a job there, good luck!- By the way, check this out. They're hiring soon.

I played with a dealer at the bellagio who was covering breaks for the other dealers. She would play for a bit then leave her chips at the table and go deal a down, then come back and play for a while. She said it's pretty much what she did every friday.

How long till your replaced by a computerized table? Something you should consider before becoming a dealer. The money sounds pretty good(talking to some off the clock dealers while in vegas they said about $28 hour is there average) but if poker intrest weens and computerize tables get phased in its a job without long term security.

Funniest thing I've heard in a while. This will never actually fly. 2 computerized tables were put in place at Turning Stone a few months back and many people refused to go near the machines. They're slow, hard to use and just an overall pain in the ***. You'd need to hire someone to "watch over" every table anyways which wouldn't really cut down on the manpower needed to run a poker room. Just an overall bad investment.

what about rate of pay? Again Im canadian so would be working in a cndn casino....whats the wages like? If i cant keep my tips, then its fine, IF the wage is decent. however if its like being a waiter, where its min wage, then its not ok. waiters survive off the tips, and thats why the employers pay min wage........anyone got any idea what the salary is like?Plus theres also the age old question, alot of casinos want experience. how do you get experience if no one hires you?
