Interesting Strategy

Recommended Posts

I had an interesting hand the other day playing 9-handed, NLHE, 2-5NL at well known Vegas casino. I was dealt TJh in mid-position and opened the pot to 20 (normally like to play multi-handed in that position with this hand but table was too tight/weak). I get re-raised to 50 from an aggressive and solid player on the button. I make the call since we both had such deep stacks of over $1200 and I felt that I could put him on a hand very easily post-flop. The flop came A,8,9 with two spades. I check and my opponent makes a bet of 100. I figured he wouldn't make a bet like this with AA in the hole, but he would with KK, QQ or AK. I figured that if I call the flop and check on the turn he would check behind me with KK or QQ, and on the turn I could take the pot away, and that he would bet again on turn with with AK. Also if I call the flop and check the turn I know he would consider a spade coming off to be a bad card for him. I decided that I would play the hand as though I were on spades and spill a lot chips on the river if a spade arrived on either turn or river. I also had the legitimate up-and-down draw. I would never try this move on someone unable to lay a hand down, and this player I had seen lay down large hands before more or less with a Hellmuth "I can dodge (insert powerful hand here) baby!" glee. I figure playing with this strategy makes me the favourite over AK as I have (8+7) 15 outs, whats more if I catch a 7 or Q that's not a spade I may be able to get a big call on the river running what looks like a broken-flush draw bluff. Also, all this time thinking on the flop about what to do makes it appear I am drawing. I make the call on the flop and the dealer reveals a beautiflul 3 of spades on the turn. I check and my opponent makes a weak $100 bet and it is clear he did not like the card. I make the call. The rive is a 2 of diamonds. I figured I wanted a bet that was borderline bluff country (ie, suspicious overbet) yet pricy enough that he doesn't want to look foolish calling a bet that size when the flush gets there and he is sitting red-faced with a hand that is 4 hand ranks below the winning hand. I decided on a pot-size bet of $400. He let out a big sigh and showed the player next to him his hand then shook his head again and mucked. I have rarely executed that play but it seems to work well. Ideally the straight hits, but the flush is certainly an easy bluff if played properly.

don't listen to the flamers. your thought process was pretty good on this one, nh.a little note though: your bluff is sometimes better executed on the turn if the ace on board is NOT a spade, since it will seem like you're afraid of him holding the As and want to get the money in good.

I totally agree with your idea to push when the spade hits on the turn, and in hindsight it would have been the better move (btw A on board was not a spade). I suppose it is much safer to push on turn and not allow him to further improve his hand on river to a point where he will make a crying call on river, for example like you said, if a spade hits again on river and he holds a high spade. Next time I will push on turn if the flush or straight hits. I suppose during the hand I wanted confirmation of where I thought he was in the hand by seeing his reaction after I checked to him on turn. I was looking for the weak bet or check before I went for the steal. As you know running -what is for me - a big bluff is challenging since I still have the scars from when I have bluffed into hands that could not possibly fold.I don't quite understand the "buckle-up" type comments. I prefer to read and write about actual strategy - whether right or wrong - then read another blog titled "DN broke?" , or, "A horde of tarantula's have taken over my house! so send money quick so I can enter tournament Sunday, win first place, and pay for a tarantula remover apparatus".
