Figured with all the Gretzky vs. Mario talk and me being a life long Oilers Fan I'd add my list to the thread.GM- Glenn Sather- made some of the greatest moves when he was in Edmonton and it was a bitter bitter day when he went to the NYRHead Coach- Glenn Sather- his brilliance in the front office pails in his brilliance to coach, yes he had some of the greatest rosters ever assembled in NHL history but he also got the maximum out of them and knew how to motivate a team.G- Grant Fuhr- Edmonton had a lot of great goalies during the 80's and 90's but Fuhr always won the big game honorable mention: Andy Moug, Bill Rantford, Curtis JosephD- Paul Coffey- the all-time leading scorer and assister amongst defencemen played much like Bobby Orr did just a generation later, Orr probably would have had the most points had he stayed healthy but Coffee was a force to.D- Kevin Lowe- the perfect ying to to Coffey's yang a much more stay at home defenseman who knew how to keep the opposing team's forwards down.LW- Mark Messier- The man I believe to be the MOST underated player in NHL history, yes Gretzky was the most skilled player on the Oilers dynasty but Messier was the brute force and the heart of the dynasty years. An easily overlooked fact is that Messier won 2 Stanley Cups without Gretzky while Gretzky won none without Messier. He played physical and tough and with his shot and Gretzky's passing that would be a scary line. RW- Jari Kurri- another insanely talented player he had a big impact on the increasing number of Scandinavian players coming over to play in the NHL. Gretkzy was a great player and passer and Kurri made the most out of all the passes he got from Gretzky. One of the top European born NHL players of all time. He is currently second all time in points by a European behind only JagrC- Wayne Gretzky- I could write a long drawn out explanation as to why Gretzky but that would waste be a waste of time, simply the greatest period. The nice part about this list is that unlike many of the other lists out there I don't have to wonder what would happen if all of these guys played together in their prime because they did and it was fun to watch. The only downside is the likelihood of the Oilers having such an amazing team again isn't so great.Edit: was looking over some stats and found out Paul Coffey had 138 points in the 85-86 season. To put that in perspective consider that would likely win the overall scoring race for forward's this year by about 10 points.

Messier isn't underated by anyone. Well, maybe blind Somalian cricket fans.

LOL... when I first started to read this post, I thought it was going to be a Mike Ditka/Da Bears type post.... GM-Sather, Coach-Sather, Goaltender-Sather, Centre-Sather... "Okay, you got the third armored battalion on ice skates, plus everyone in the Hall of Fame against Sather... who wins?" "No question about it- Sather 13, Army Minus 2"

there, now thats better. :club: One of the best 5man units I ever saw.And I'll throw in Tretiak too, even though at their prime, those 5 never let the other team see the puck, let alone take a shot.

So...G Patrick RoyD Larry RobinsonD Doug HarveyW Maurice RichardC Jean BéliveauW Guy LafleurCoaches Toe Blake & Scotty Bowman (Those two might be the best coaches ever in the history of the NHL : I can't decide between them)GM Sam Pollock (AINEC)And maybe you already know this (true) story : Wayne Gretzky was skating down the ice with the puck. While passing in front of a referee, he yelled "6 PLAYERS!". The referee, in fact, stopped the action and gave the opposite team a 2-minute penalty for having too many players on the ice. When asked how he could have possibly known that, Gretzky said : "I was just deking my second opponent when I saw 4 remaining players in front of me. That's how I knew it..."Gretzky was truly the Great One. But I still choose Mario Lemieux in front of him...

Good story but Gretzky must have been pissed as hell.... he had the puck so the ref should have raised his hand to indicate a delayed penalty and called it when the opposing team gained control of the puck Hell Gretzky was probably planning to deke out all 6 of them and score.

The results:G - Jacques PlanteD - Doug HarveyD - Larry RobinsonLW - Dickie MooreC - Jean BeliveauRW - Maurice RichardCoach - Toe BlakeThe Canadiens franchise is probably the most difficult to narrow down to 5 players.
Only difficult from the standpoint of them having massive years of talented players to choose from, but aside from the goaltender position I can't think of any arguements that can be made for other players at those positions. Mahovlich at LW I guess was better historically but moreso as a Leaf but I could make a good arguement that Dickie Moore was better historically anyway.
