Pokerghost2 0
didnt tj win the big tourn at the bike 3 yrs in a row? and also one other i think amarillo slims super bowl of poker. it was either that or the diamond jim brady tourn he won 3 times in a row. i think chip reeses 30 yrs of being a winner in various games at the highest level is the greatest accomplishment. i expect to be flamed for not having my tj facts right so let me have it! And if someone knows which tourn it was please post it.
Silly String 0
I idolize Norman Chad. He is high-larious!! If he says Dan Harrington, then I am sticking with him. For reals do: Harrington making two final tables is going to take some luck, but it takes far more skill to weather those sizeable fields. IMO, you won't see another WSOP main event champion that always has the best of it when the money goes in. They will suck out once or twice on some competitors. The field is just too big for someone not to run into a situation where they are behind. AA to KK or Nut-flush draw semi-bluff, etc.. Dan Harrington's run is my vote for the most unbelieveable accomplishment in poker.
711Buddha 0
Chris Moneymaker winning the main event of the WSOP in his first ever live tourney off a $40 sat. That folks, is an accomplishement that will never EVER be repeated.
KidKanuck 0
Why in the world would the greatest accomplishment have anything to do with tournaments. The guy who wins the most money in cash games before he dies accomplished the most. Period. It's easy to keep score in poker.I think there would be an arguement that High profile success does determine the greatest accomplishment.I think it equates to what is the greatest accomplishment of all-time in golf. Nicklaus's 17 majors or Woods most money. How 'bout in baseball A-rods contract or XHow 'bout in Hockey Gretzkys 217(I think it was 217) pt season or Yashins 10 year 100 million dollar contract....just like poker, first and foremost it is about the money...but after that what is important is the high profile success.Just a thought.KK
rog 0
Two nights ago, I flopped set of sixes in the $3 buy-in NL tourney on pokerstars. I successfully trapped two opponents into going all-in on the turn, and trippled up. If that's doesn't beat Daniel's POTY, I dont know what does. I mean seriously...think about it. This was the THREE dollar tourney, not that fishy $1 buyin crap shoot. Okay, so I busted barely in the money...it was a bad beat. Besides, after that triple up, who really cares who won the tourney.Where do I get my award?
rog 0
Mr. Smasharoo is right as far as how you'd rank the best poker player. ITS THE ONE WITH THE MOST MONEY MADE PLAYING POKER.I respecfully disagree. Tournaments individually are ranked by what order people bust out in. Payouts vary from tournament to tournament, as do blind structures, field size and field quality. In cash games, it's pretty easy to use cash as the score. For tournaments, I think average final ranking or ITM% or average final percentile rank is probably a better "score". If I win every charity poker tournament in NA for the next year, does that make me the worst poker player in the world since I earned 0 dollars?Big buy-in tourneys are high variance. There aren't enough million dollar events in a year (or a decade even) for skill to dominate variance. The most skilled poker player wont necessarily have the biggest tournament winnings. If best doesn't mean most skilled, I dont know what it means.
lind0 0
How about Gus Hansen lately on the WPT? Not as big an accomplishment as some of the others, but that's the most impressive thing in a while.
SwedishPro 0
Dont forget Marcel Luske.2003 Main 14.2004 Main 10.Very good...
Chiggleslap 0
what about when that dude used the 2 finger check?that shi.t was unbelievable and unarguably the best accomplishmentYES. I was rolling on the floor laughing for ten minutes when I saw that... HAHAHAHAHAahAHaHAhaahahahAHaHAHAHAHAHA!
Chiggleslap 0
It seems that there's so much luck in tournaments that you see so many new faces at every final tableNew faces?? Have you been watching the WPT this year?Do your homework before you make a statement like that...
JaysonWeber 0
I have to forget about tournaments when I look at this. I'm going to say Chip Reese, I think he's going to go down in history as the first all-around Professional Poker Player to have nearly no weak game. His weakest game is 10x better than 90% of the players strongest games. I don't know of any arugments against it, but all are welcome.
TheGame 0
Chris Moneymaker winning the main event of the WSOP in his first ever live tourney off a $40 sat. That folks, is an accomplishement that will never EVER be repeated.Um.. i think the likelihood of the being repeated is greater than that of a pro winning it. Last two years have been internet qualifiers, i wouldn't be surprised if the next one is either.
Chiggleslap 0
Man, I remembered why people hate smasharoo so much.Hey, smash, my favorite blunt-smoking feline:It's hard to agree with you when you express yourself in such a hostile and condescending manner. Yeah, smash, it does a lot of good to berate people for disagreeing with you. It's like you go on the defensive before anyone even replies to you. I don't know if it's some kind of anger management problem or what. Why the **** are you so bitter? It was nice not hearing from you for awhile... were you on vacation or something? Please go back. You detract from the overall integrity of this forum,ChiggleslapP.S."If I saw you on the street, I'd kick the $h!t out of you."- Mr. Escalante in Stand and Deliver
Meatwad 0
Chan's back to back then second. He dominated the major tournaments and smaller tourneys during those years. You talk about the size of the field but he won final tables with Harrington, Lederer, Seidel, and Cloutier being top 10. Also in those tournaments that didn't reach the final table were Ungar and Brunson. The quality of the participants can be argued.
kaisersoze12 0
I think it is amazing that Jen Harman learned how to play 2-7 draw no limit by getting pointers from Jesus, then went out the next day a won the $5000 buy-in WSOP event.A couple years ago, I think.I also like that homeless dude pimping McMannus in the 2004 WSOP . . . hahaha . . . pokerplayer24 0
chan with 1st 1st 2ndA good accomplishment but not the best ever is marcel luske reaching the final 2 tables back to back years. Figure if he got cards late he would be getting the same amount of credit that harrington gets now.
Sushiman 0
I also like that homeless dude pimping McMannus in the 2004 WSOP . . . hahaha . . .Haha, oh man I loved that part of WSOP. I loved it even more after I read McMannus's crappy masbatory book, Positively Fifth Street, about how he lucked it to the final table. Great poker accomplishment is definitely Chan's back to back and then 2nd place. The people he had to compete against were insane. I know the field is bigger nowadays but the WSOP has turned into a all in/ suckout fest, which is also why it's so damn entertaining to watch now.
Rainman312 0
What Stu accomplished by winning 3 WSOP main events in amazing. If the guy had stayed clean all those years who knows what he could have accomplished. If we are talking about the most talented player it would have to be stu. When he died his life or poker career wasnt close to being over. I honestly belive there that his standard of 3 wins will never be touched and considering his life ended way before his time and most of those years he was all coked up. Its a shame what he did and I hope its a lesson for everyone......what could have been
TimmyOne 0
I'm probably going out on a limp here, but I think Hellmuth's main event win at the 1989 WSOP was the greatest poker accomplishment ever. He's still the youngest main event winner and he had to defeat the reigning back-to-back champion (Chan) to do it ... I think you would need a Hellmuth-size ego to be able to handle it and actually believe you could win ...While I think it's possible to see a 24-year-old eventually break Hellmuth's record as the youngest main event winner, it won't carry nearly the same weight in the "Internet Poker Era" ... How Hellmuth gained the experience (by the age of 24, while going to college) to be a world-class player without playing poker online is incredible ...David Williams' finish at the 2004 WSOP was incredible for similar reasons.
