Where Would You Be Without Poker?

Recommended Posts

Say that you had never discovered poker in your life, would anything be different for you? Has poker had such a great impact that you can comfotably say that you would not be where you are today without poker, or has poker just been that little something to keep you busy when you have little else to do? In general, how much has poker affected your life?

I would have been bored out of my mind for 4 months at the end of the summer/fall lying in bed with a wrenched knee and broken ankle. Now, I'd have less money, as I'd be back intown drinking a little more often like before.

I'd actually be worse off, since I used to battle my boredom on the extremely negative EV games of chance in the Casino.Online, I suck, but live I average about 60% winning sessions.Socially, it has become an avenue for my wife and a bunch of other couples to get together in the winters, let our kids play in the basement, and have a lot of fun and laughs in small buying tourneys or cash games (we buy in for 10 to 1 on our money). So I would say the poker boom, on the whole, has improved my quality of life.

1. My condo would be much less of a pig sty.2. I would probably have published an article or two in an academic journal that would have helped my career3. I might be in better physical shape ... no ... I take that back ... I still would not have exercised4. I would have missed many important life lessons about taking calculated risks, intimidation, bluffing, losing, winning, etc.On the whole, I think I am better off as a person because of poker -- even if I do live in a pig sty.

I'd be better at pool. Other than that I have a great job, great family, and poker gives us the extra cash to have fun. You have to find a balance with it. If you do, and you're a winning player, then poker can be a great addition to your life. It has been in mine.
