CMOORACES 0
I started reading Daniel’s blog before the FCP became THE FCP. Back then it was a plainer looking site with gold(ish) accents and it had some very basic information on DN. There was a trophy room that didn’t always work and some bio information. No forum. No online poker site. Just a basic web page. And a blog…I started reading it whenever a new post was made. There was no responding to it in forums. I don’t even know how many people even read it. But I did and I thought first and foremost that DN was a pretty darn good writer. I knew he could play some cards, but I was really taken with his ability to express the written word. Fact is, he didn’t even post that often back then. I emailed him to say that my wife and I both enjoyed his writing and encouraged him to post more. It was so long ago that DN even had the time to reply within an hour to my email! He said his web guy was behind and that he was trying to do more with the site. I showed my wife that a big time poker player had emailed me. She joked about not quitting my day job and it's been a running joke ever since. At that time, I was starting my own small business and worked incredibly long hours. Stress was unbearable at times. I found outlets for it. One of them was reading DN’s blog every day when I ate my lunch. It’s a tradition that continues today. I always get excited when there’s something new to read. I’m not living vicariously and I don’t want to run off into the sunset with Daniel Negreanu. I just really enjoyed reading about someone who had a very interesting life. And it was written so well! Maybe I did dream a little about being a professional poker player. And that helped to take a little stress out of my day. Maybe it gave me confidence to go after my dreams which I have. I don't risk tens of thousands on a single poker hand but I've risked a lot to run my own business and some of the inspiration did in fact come from a Canadian poker player's blog. It was at times interesting, intriguing, inspiring and emotional all at the same time. After a while, reading that little blog just became part of my routine. When the whole FCP site exploded, I actually felt like the shop keeper muscled out by Wal-Mart. Suddenly there was an online poker site to play at and this forum to post in. I played a fair share on the site. But I only posted a handful of times in the forum including a big cluster during the people’s choice Cardplayer Mag award. For me, reading the blog was the only thing I did religiously at FCP. There’s all this talk about Daniel not owing anything to anybody. And he certainly doesn’t. I don’t have a signed contract in hand forcing Daniel Negreanu to document his life online for my amusement. And given all of the raging controversy he deals with in these forums, I don’t blame him for wanting to ditch the whole thing. We all get a little glimpse into this guy’s life and anybody who reads this blog regularly has followed DN’s trials and tribulations with his fame, this site and most of all his poker game. It takes a lot of guts to dump out your life, have thousands of people (or more) read it and then have them chew it up and spit back at you.But I won’t address any of that. I’m just a 30 something guy with a wife, a teenager and hectic work life. And for a few minutes out of the day, I really enjoyed my lunches with Daniel’s stories. I continue to work hard in my business. It’s funny. I even emailed DN before his last blog to propose doing an online training gig with him through my company. It was a shot in the dark. I never expected a reply. Now that the FCP site is so big, he probably gets a million emails. And after reading his last post I certainly don’t expect a reply now. And that’s ok. The guy wants to go back to playing the cards. He's wants to get back to basics. He certainly is good at it.I have a feeling that Daniel will still post a blog. I really hope he does. If not, I will miss the stories. And I wish him nothing but luck. Someday I would love to sell my little enterprise and have the money to travel the poker circuit for a year and get a small taste of what I've been reading about all of these years. I’m not that bad, after all. Maybe I’ll even start a blog…
