Very First Hand Of The Night

Recommended Posts

This is my first hand of the night. I don't recognize either of the two players who are in on the flop so I have no reads. What's my line here?PokerStars Game #8361583982: Hold'em No Limit ($0.10/$0.25) - 2007/02/09 - 20:51:47 (ET)Table 'Bodea' 9-max Seat #5 is the buttonSeat 1: cat923 ($40.30 in chips) Seat 2: Money022 ($25 in chips) Seat 3: shortseller6 ($3.20 in chips) Seat 4: devotee ($16.85 in chips) Seat 5: money path ($4.95 in chips) Seat 6: PairONines ($24.45 in chips) Seat 7: pixels2232 ($32.95 in chips) Seat 8: Lost Metal ($4.75 in chips) Seat 9: Cypher19 ($39.65 in chips) PairONines: posts small blind $0.10pixels2232: posts big blind $0.25Money022: posts big blind $0.25*** HOLE CARDS ***Dealt to Money022 [As Ks]Lost Metal: folds Cypher19: folds cat923: raises $1 to $1.25Money022: calls $1shortseller6: folds devotee: folds money path: folds PairONines: folds pixels2232: calls $1*** FLOP *** [Ad 5h 2s]pixels2232: checks cat923: bets $2.50Money022: ???

I prefer a reraise to ~$3.5 preflop. As played, I think I like smooth calling and raising the turn. You are more likely to get paid by AQ/AJ that way and you stand to make more from KK/QQ.(I played a hand almost exactly the same tonight with aces up on the flop. The turn was a queen and I stacked off against his QQ. /shrug)

Maybe it's weak by me, but I'm not big on reraising in MP with AKs, especially when I'm new to the table and have no read on my opponents. I thought about a smooth call, but I also thought about making a big raise and ending it right away since I wasn't heads up.

Keep in mind this is an EP raise - gotta believe without any reads he has a good hand here. Raise to isolate if you like, but AKs is a good enough hand multiway that I don't mind one or two additional callers. You hit the flop nicely, and he bets $2.50 into a $3.75 pot. Standard continuation bet - pop it by $6 more and finish the hand here.Keep in mind you also have the backdoor nut flush draw if you are called.

In a short handed game i 3bet here 100% of the time with AK however in a full ring game just calling is quite acceptable with position.Flat call flop and raise turn as long as a TJQ doesn't fall. Raising flop is leaving alot of value at the table by tipping villian off about our holding too early. Even calling a turn bet also is fine, you may not need to raise at all in the hand. If villian checks turn i would check behind looking to gain a value bet on the river.

I decided without knowing anything about my opponents, I would play the hand a bit faster and try to end it or get a loose call.PokerStars Game #8361583982: Hold'em No Limit ($0.10/$0.25) - 2007/02/09 - 20:51:47 (ET)Table 'Bodea' 9-max Seat #5 is the buttonSeat 1: cat923 ($40.30 in chips) Seat 2: Money022 ($25 in chips) Seat 3: shortseller6 ($3.20 in chips) Seat 4: devotee ($16.85 in chips) Seat 5: money path ($4.95 in chips) Seat 6: PairONines ($24.45 in chips) Seat 7: pixels2232 ($32.95 in chips) Seat 8: Lost Metal ($4.75 in chips) Seat 9: Cypher19 ($39.65 in chips) PairONines: posts small blind $0.10pixels2232: posts big blind $0.25Money022: posts big blind $0.25*** HOLE CARDS ***Dealt to Money022 [As Ks]Lost Metal: folds Cypher19: folds cat923: raises $1 to $1.25Money022: calls $1shortseller6: folds devotee: folds money path: folds PairONines: folds pixels2232: calls $1*** FLOP *** [Ad 5h 2s]pixels2232: checks cat923: bets $2.50Money022: raises $4.50 to $7pixels2232: folds cat923: folds Money022 collected $8.45 from pot

Oh well. You weren't going to get anything out of him anyway. Before I saw the results I was with Wasp in smooth calling the flop and moving in on the turn if it's 9 or less. Either way you were all done getting money out of this Villain.Nice start to the night. :club:

That's the point Sklansky makes in his NL book. Don't bother slowplaying. Make your bet and hope he has a real good second best hand he's gonna pay you off with.

Havent read replies so: I think there are 2 lines you can take in this: 1. With the line youve used I would probably flat call this flop (FPS) and then look to raise ai any turn that he bets2. The better line imo is to reraise him to 3-4 preflop and if he bets the flop push...if he checks bet at or around the potAFter reading replies yeah u seem to have an understanding of the 2 lines. Waiting to teh turn is much better imo to get aggressive since this board is very draw light

I can see smooth calling or check/raising here. Smooth calling might get you some more in the long run, but a lot of players won't keep putting money in the pot with KK/QQ or a weaker A if you just flat call and check the turn, not knowing anything about you.I think the check raise is the right play, and hope someone overplays an A with a weaker kicker.
