i was just wondering if there are any internet pros, on this website or anybody that relies a considerable amount on their internet poker income to pay the bills...i seem to make a steady rate each month, but i dont totally rely on it...i have a couple of questions....1. What do you do you play? (ring games, limits, tourneys, etc...)2. What do you make each month? (structure of you winnings, and what you make each day)3. What do you have as a backup, if you hit a bad slump?4. What site do you play at?5. What other tips would you give on playing full-time?

1. A mix of both. If I have time I usually play tournaments as I enjoy the challange more. Although these are not consistently as profitable as ring games, they do bring me more excitement and thrill, plus the opportunities for big scores. For tournies I usually play anything from 5-30 buy ins with satallites for bigger tournies. I have yet to have a good breakthrough in a bigger tournament other than 2 wins to go to Aruba past 2 years. For ring games I typically play shorthanded games as I like to be aggrsssive and it gives you the best advantage to fleece the fish. Typically 3/6 but I have played as high as 10/20 with success. 2. Last year was the first full year of playing for me. I averaged $2k a month, the previous year I started playing in June and averaged $1k a month. This year I have been cashing alot in tournies but no real big scores, but still have managed a $3k average. My goal for this year was a $4k a month average, so I am a bit behind but a few tournament runs and that won't be a problem. As I said tourny wins can be quite the fluctuation at times. I don't really think to much about daily winnings as I look it as a big long session. However, if I notice that I am having a bad day, run of cards, bad luck I tend to take a long break. Its important to play less when things arent going your way. Go play a video game go take a long walk, go have dinner, go to a movie with the girlfriend. Do something and get away from the game for awhile. 3. I do substitute teach and coach basketball at a local high school. I do this in part cause it is a consistent amount of small income, but really that is more just personal satisfaction. I am not overly convinced that I want to be a poker pro. Plus I really do enjoy working with kids and helping them. Eventually I will become a full time teacher so being a sub does help with that. 4. I play most of my time at UB. I like the set up there the best and the ability to get hand histories immediatly is a nice feature. Plus the tournament structure is by far the best out there online. I also do play tournies at Stars. While the structure sucks after the 2nd hour, you cant argue the payouts are just awesome so they are hard to pass up. I also have account at pokerroom and party but I rarely play there. Just dont like the set up of the sites, the graphics and so on. While party does have the weakest overall players, I do consistetly win in cash games on UB so I dont feel the need to play much there.5. Other tips. Online is all about reading peoples hands and recognizing betting patterns. Key into how your opponents are playing and what hands they are playing. This will help you immensly. Also, like I said earlier take breaks. Take days off without playing. Keep an outside life. EXERCISE. All this will help you keep a mentally balanced lifestyle. Best of luck.

I make around the same amonut playing poker a week as my other inocomes. Thankfully I live %100 off the other income and never touch my poker winnings. (So some wouldn't call me a "proffessional" I guess)1. Limit ring games only: 5/10 up to 15/30. About 90% of the games I play are shorthanded. Occasional multitable tournament. Probably average 3 $50-100 SNG a week . Tournaments are fun I'm just not a very good tournament player.2. Around 2bigbets/100 hands/table3. I have a rediculously sized bankroll for the limits I play at. If I lose that many bets, it won't be because I was going through a bad streak-- it will be because I'm not a winning player anymore.4. Party/skins and others.5. Another poster said "Exercise". That is great advice. Some that I need to start practicing myself. It's so easy to become a lazy bum and not want to do anything but eat, sleep, and play poker. Along with exercise I would say eat healthy as well. Be honost with yourself about your results and your play. Pay taxes quarterly- it's easier imo.

Professional means you get paid to do something. Therefore, I am a professional.  Someone pays you to lose money at Holdem?Sweet.
By JFarrell's lofty standards, I'm now a professional WPT tournament handicapper. :club:

Yes, if you get paid to do "X" then you are a professional "X".I don't understand why you guys aren't aware of this.  If Party Poker gave you a $20 bonus to play poker there and you ended up positive for the year, then you could say you are a professional poker player.I wouldn't call myself a professional poker player until I made probably $50k a year but as far as the OP is concerned, I'll chip in with my thoughts.Smash did you ever decide if you wanted to play me at Party at a heads-up private table?$25 NL heads up.  We'll post the hand history the next day on here and listen to everyones thoughts.

I tend to agree with Caro's definition but they are all good. I think I'm in the "it's what I've always wanted to be" category too.DDhttp://pokertimes.blogspot.com

Thanks for the link - I just bookmarked that article! It's a great listing of what a number of recognized poker professionals have said about defining their profession.I like the 3 year rule a lot - it's good enough for the IRS. Any time less is really just apprenticeship or being a journeyman. Sure, you see more hands online, but there is no substitute for the slow progress of time to mull things over and mature.

In grade 4 I played a game of marbles for a dollar, at the time I didn't know I was a profession marbler.

Or, I'm a master of trickery and all my posts are random and unsubstantial just to trick people like you into playing me heads up.

Did you win? Then yes.If you lost, then you may have still considered yourself a professional marbler, but really you were just a young entrepreneur with a failing business.

I prefer to say that I play poker full time. I wouldn't call myself a pro unless I averaged over 50K/year for 2 or more years in a row. Since I've only been playing for 11 months, I don't meet that requirement.1. I mostly play 5/10 Limit Hold 'Em. I play 10/20 if I can find a juicy game. I've just started playing tournaments about 2 months ago and I try to play at least 1 per day.2. I make about 1400/month (excluding tournaments). That's about 3.2BB/100 hands and about 1.5 BB/hour.3. I have a huge bankroll for the limits I play at... so, my bankroll, I guess. But, I'm not really forced to make money playing poker because of savings and a nice girlfriend. 4. Pacific Poker5. Read Sklansky's "Hold 'em Poker for Advanced Players" and grind it out baby.
