Zach6668 513
though the Pens are going into their predictable "we don't need no stinkin defense now that Sid is back" mode.

serge 904
That was the first loss with Crosby in the last 15 games. Also the first time in 11 games they have given up more than 2 with him in lineup
Zach6668 513
ya they played poorly.... Pens in 5 was my pick though, wasn't it?

serge 904
I come in peace.... I havent seen ALL the games, but from what I saw last night, there is something off with Fleury..His numbers just fall off a cliff in the playoffs the last 2 years..I know he is a much better goalie than that.. Is it all on him? Is it the defence?

digitalmonkey 929
Zach will know better than me, but it seems like the Pens like to play more of a run-and-gun style than in years past...especially when Crosby is in the lineup. Not that Crosby is to blame, just that he seems to elevate his teammates confidence in being able to come back from any deficit which leads to less than 100% effort on the d-side of the puck. Dubey 1,035
It's not a recent trend. Since 2009-2010, Fleury has been a good, but not great goalie in the regular season, and a bad goalie in the playoffs.

mrdannyg 274
Looks like he thought it was a player. Doesn't really look like that to me. He has a good second or two with the stripes in view and still follows through. Unless he's gone insane, or the ref said something, I can't imagine it was anything else, but that wasn't clear in the video.

Unless he's gone insane, or the ref said something, I can't imagine it was anything else, but that wasn't clear in the video. There's no way he had a second or two. My guess is he's trying to look in four different directions at once, sees movement and quickly reacts.
mrdannyg 274
There's no way he had a second or two. My guess is he's trying to look in four different directions at once, sees movement and quickly reacts. I'll allow that if it was the end of a tough game, and given his location, he was almost certainly expecting a scrum. And it looks WAY worse in slow-mo, since it makes us overestimate how much reaction time they had. The only reasonable explanation is he thought it was an Islander (or the ref said something, which is almost 0%). Just saying that, looking at the video, seems like he has enough reaction time to not follow through, or, once he did, he didn't seem to react with surprise/regret. Just weird. Most likely explanation is he didn't really touch the ref, just looks like it, so didn't feel the need to apologize or whatever.
Fenxis 99
Greg Wyshynski @wyshynski 16m When asked his reaction to Vokoun starting, Marc-Andre Fleury's voice was drowned out by a loud horn and a flashing red siren. Looks like the Pens are going to switch it up for game 5. I'm a little stunned the series has played out like this.
Zach6668 513
It's not ALL Fleury. I started off referencing a few unlucky plays, but now I'm just going to break down each goal against this year: Game 1 (0 GA): Shutout Game 2 (4 GA): Goal 1: PPG against, Tavares up high, to Moulson down low, cross crease off to Boyes, but off the Pens D-man and in. Not sure what Fleury could have done. Goal 2: Dump in behind the net, defense can't play it, takes a weird bounce, Colin McDonald whacks it through a tiny hole from a weird angle. Not a good goal for Fleury or the defense. Goal 3: 3-on-2 for the Isles, player takes a hard shot from the slot, wide of the net, puck bounces as fast as possible off the end boards right to Martin in front who puts it in. Out of position? Don't now, he did the right thing coming out to take away the angle on the shooter, and it ricocheted off the end boards impossibly fast. I'll call that unlucky. Goal 4: Okposo turnaround shot wide, off the end boards, Fleury pushes off into position to cover the post, goes off the inside of his blocker, off the inside of his leg, trickles in. As bad as this looks, IMO, this is bad luck, not bad play. It's scary if it becomes a trend, as it did last playoffs, though. Game 3 (4 GA): Goal 1: Cross crease pass, Fleury makes the initial save and several rebounds before Matt Moulson comes in (3rd player) and finally scores. What else can Fleury do? Not his fault on this one. Goal 2: Defenseman gives it away, Grabner goes wide, behind the net, then passes back out against the grain and Cizikas snipes it from the left slot. Not a terrible goal against. Prime shooting area for the Isles. Two d-men did nothing at all. Goal 3: Shorthanded breakaway for Okposo, who makes a nice shot. Breakaway goals are not on the goalie. Goal 4: MVP candidate Tavares snipes a shot from the top of the circle off the post and in. No issues with Fleury there. Game 4 (6 GA): Goal 1: Long shot from the point, through about 8 players, definitely deflects off something in front. Bad goal, but hard to fault Fleury on the screen/deflection. Goal 2: Streit shot from the point on a rebound off a rush. Looks like Fleury's skate clipped Orpik, who was down in the crease and sent him off balance. Also could have been deflected as they changed it to Tavares the next period, but switched back after the game. Could have hit a Penguin, but hard to say. Bad goal all around, nonetheless. Goal 3: Okposo banks it in from behind the net. Fleury got spot around by Crosby right before the goal, but appeared to have enough time to get back into position, but didn't. This goal is entirely on Fleury, IMO. Goal 4: Streit with a rip from the high slot, going wide, hits Murray's skate and goes in. Fleury had the net covered. Not his fault. Unlucky here. Goal 5: Brutal giveaway trying to clear the zone by Malkin, Boyes to Tavares, dangles 2 guys, Fleury makes a fantastic first save, then gets run over by Malkin as Tavares pots the rebound. That goal is definitely not on Fleury. Goal 6: Fleury was halfway to the bench to get the extra attacker on. Rushes back when the Pens turn it over at the far blue line. You can see he tries to swipe his hand to the post to get positioning. He misses originally, but finds it. Cizikas blows by Martin on the outside, throws a weak shot in front, Fleury, because of being out of position due to running back from the bench, has it go in off the shaft of his stick. This one is like 1 part unlucky bounce, 1 part semi-justifiably being out of position, and 1 part awful goal on Fleury. That one just can't happen, though. Summary: So I'm saying about 4 of the 14 GA are mostly on Fleury. That's bad, but not as bad as most people are saying. The team has, once again, totally left him out to dry. And it's not like he's not making some big saves. He's definitely made his share while the games have been close. In conclusion, Fleury hasn't been great. He hasn't been as terrible as everyone is saying. Having said that, I go to Vokoun tomorrow (and it's already been announced by Bylsma that this is the plan) because for whatever reason, there's just no confidence anywhere right now. Something needs to be changed to hopefully wake this team up. The series is 2-2. It's not 3-0 like last year. The Pens can play out of this, fix their issues by the end of the series, and hopefully move on. This sounds weird, given that the Isles are the 8 seed, but I wouldn't be surprised if the Pens ran into a team, should they get to the 2nd round, where they have an easier time winning. Something about the Isles really messing with the Pens. Their speed, their relentless pressure, etc. Most teams don't open it up like this against the Pens. Maybe more should. serge 904
Thats pretty ridicolous if you pulled all that from memory.. Better than advanced stats, analyzing of every goal...Zach guide to deep goaltending analysis..pretty cool..Patent it. Thats a ballsy move by Disco Dan...Pulling your number one guy, a cup winner with 79 games of playoff experience , for a guy that has played 11 games in the playoffs in 16 years.. If Zach's analysis is correct, which I believe is, its a bold move...Its one thing to shake up your team mid game , but to announce your goalie day before a game..Interesting. mrdannyg 274
Vokoun 'seems' like a good match for the Pens run-and-gun style, since he played so many years on bad teams. Only difference is that now if he gives up 3 on 40 shots, they'll win 5-3, instead of lose 3-1. Smart move I think by Blysma to announce it today - almost reiterates that it is not really Fleury's fault, but the defensive effort. A move like that announces to the team that changes are needed. Bet we see a more confident and better (defensively) group next game.
