The Wealthiest Poker Player-lyle Berman

Recommended Posts

This post is for the new generation! Do you know who Lyle Berman is?For those of you believing TV and the internet about who is the "best" poker player, check out Lyle Berman. Lyle is the SMARTEST and THE BEST MONEY MANAGER IN POKER!Lyle "backs" one famous Godfather of poker (when needed) and one famous "old timer" (who has been known to sell 200% of himself so he can play craps) who claims to have won more major tournaments than anyone, among others.Lyle Berman - Official World Poker Tour ProfileA lifetime of achievements and awards fill the profile of Lyle Berman, and there are many more years ahead in which he will inevitably add to that list. It's in his nature to work, prosper, and strive for greater accomplishments in business, poker, and life.Born and raised in Minnesota, Lyle exhibited competitive and ambitious qualities throughout his early years, even as a toddler. When he was two years old, he followed his older sister to school in an effort to learn. A few years later, he was involved in organizing marble games with a financial edge, running a lemonade stand with his sisters, and performing yard work around the neighborhood. Finally, at the ripe old age of ten, he began working in his father’s fur company, an employment opportunity that would develop over the years. A strong work ethic was instilled in Lyle by his parents, and his own competitive spirit propelled him to give 110% to every endeavor.Through years of making money as a youth, Lyle also learned to save and invest money. He learned about business through working with his father and finally took the initiative to ask for a piece of the fur company. As an executive, he grew the business and engineered its sale for millions of dollars, enough to enable his father to retire. While staying involved in the company in an executive capacity through several sales and repurchases, he saw Berman’s Buckskins turn into Berman’s stores, then become Wilson’s, one of the best known leather retail stores in America. Success in the business world seemed to come naturally to Lyle.As Lyle was taking the business world by storm, he had another passion that was finding its way into his life. Playing card games interested him as a young boy, and he hosted poker games in college, but gaming took an appropriate backseat to business. While the art of the gamble intrigued him more and more as he matured, he was acutely aware of the importance of taking care of life’s necessities before risking any hard-earned money.Nevertheless, Lyle took some time to read Doyle Brunson’s Super System in the 1980’s and decided to try his skills at a poker tournament in Las Vegas. Though he didn’t win the event, he discovered that the thrill of the game and the fierce but subtle competition was something that he craved. By mastering the finer points of the game, he went on to win three World Series of Poker bracelets in the 1980’s and 1990’s.Lyle’s desire to play high-stakes cash poker games instead of tournaments led him to the Big Game, where a select few players gathered in various cities on a regular basis to play poker for hundreds of thousands of dollars. The stakes were high to play an assortment of poker games with some of the top players in the world, and Lyle had found a home for his passion. Twenty years later, he continues to play in the Big Game.As always with Lyle, though, it was back to business. In 1990, he was approached to invest in an Indian casino in his home state of Minnesota, and it seemed like the perfect combination of business and gaming for his taste. He became Chairman and CEO of Grand Casinos, Inc., which soon expanded and opened casinos in several states. Subsequently, it was identified by Fortune magazine as the fastest growing company in America. And in culmination, 1998 brought the substantial merger of Hilton Casinos and Grand Casinos, with the formation of Lakes Gaming Corporation as a spin-off company.Lyle might have been happy with the immense growth of his casino operations and innumerable business successes under his belt, but it can’t be said that he will pass up a promising new business opportunity. In 2001, Lyle agreed to meet with Steve Lipscomb to discuss a proposition of televised poker tournaments. It had the ingredients of a successful venture, including Lyle’s gut feeling to invest in the idea. With the blessings of Lakes’ Board of Directors, the finances were in place, and the first tournament was held, taped, edited, and offered for sale. The Travel Channel entered into an agreement with Lakes to air the first season of the World Poker Tour.Today, the WPT is in its fourth season of production. WPT Enterprises broke from Lakes in order to become a public company in 2004, but Lyle, who had the confidence to back the project from the beginning, remains deeply committed and sits on the Board of Directors of WPTE. He plays an integral role in the company’s decisions to license its products, broadcast its shows internationally, and find new ways to market the ever-growing WPT brand.Lyle Berman has made a living out of an open mind, sound investments, and wise business decisions. Through these endeavors and a tremendous amount of life experience for one person, he has gained the respect of the business world and the poker community. He now has a book, aptly named I’m All In, that gives considerable insight into his upbringing, work ethic, family and friends, and life thus far.Montana :club:

Where in the WPT article did it mention how successful he has been in cash games? The only impressive poker achievement mentioned in the article were his 3 bracelets. I don't get what makes him so great.
How Lyle uses his money is what makes him great. The "action junkies" could take a lesson from Lyle. Lyle is not trying to see who can make the most hoops or shoot the best round of golf for hundreds of thousands or millions of dollars. Lyle owns casino's. (like Daniel is trying to do with this site)Invest rather than gambleMontana :club:

Now...don't take this the wrong way...but to end each post with your name and a clapping smiley face...it almost seems like a first grader who is so happy that he put his pants on the right way. Matt Damon also comes to mind...Crazykid13 :club:

Lyle Berman is alot like Bobby Baldwin. Both are world class players that have played at the big game. They are multiple bracelet winners but have been more involved in the business side and have been very successful with that.

Daniel is a "action junkie" who is attempting to "right his ship," one way for Daniel to do that, is thru this site. (capitalizing on his image and diversifing his income sources other than poker)In 30 years, I have seen soooo many so called, "professional poker players" have a rush of cards, win BIG BUCKS, but five years later, or less, have nothing. You guys all know Archie the Greeks story don't ya? Archie had one of the biggest "rushes" ever, yet blew off 20 million (or in that neighborhood).
