Beginner's Luck?

Recommended Posts

I played 1-2 NL at a local casino for the first time this weekend. I played for about 90 minutes and finished up $450. Most of the other players were incredibly easy to read and I could make pot size bets with my monster hands and count on at least 1 caller. Is this just beginner's luck or is this kind of play common at the lower limits in live games?

Yeah, it's very common to find horrible players in a low live game. Some sessions you'll get sucked out on and lose a bunch, but most of the time you should be able to show a nice profit.

Youhad enough good hands in 90 minutes to be "consistently" making pot sized bets, so- yeah- there's a little bit of luck there. These games usually move incredibly slow

Geez. Last time I played 2/5 NL, I don't think I played a hand out of the blinds for 90 minutes.... :club:
LOL, I played a 2/5 session where I didn't see a flop from 6:35 until 9:15. Then the damn busted loose and I walked away $2K+ ahead.

I donk it at those loose tables. People are so easy to read its hardly fair. Also, 90min is a VERY SHORT live session.
Yes I would have loved to play longer, but they opened up a 2-5 table and 6 of the players left. The other 3 that were left had just sat down so I figured it was time to cash out. I played very agressively and saw a lot of flops. I caught a couple good breaks, flopping bottom set against top 2 pair, caught the nut flush when another guy made 2nd nuts and I flopped the nut straight when another guy flopped a set, and those paid off very well. The biggest mistake I made was only buying in for $100. I doubled up on the nut straight but I was still at $140 when that happened. On the other 2 I stacked my opponent but one guy only had $45 and the other had $110.I don't have many chances to play live because of family and work obligations, but my goal for this year is to play live once a month as long as I keep by bankroll healthy. Thanks for the feedback!

I'd say you had some good cards comin your way to only play for 90 mins like that. As far as the play you noticed, expect it almost everytime...however do not expect cards like that. Folding and folding and folding gets annoying when you know you're paying $6 session fee every half hour.

It sounds like u just gave some coolers, but generally I find the play at low level cash games to be horrible and the players unbluffable. I am mainly a tournament player, and usually do well at the SNGs after, but recently I have begun to notice there is alot of money in the side games. My strategy: play super tight. Try to see alot of flops for 2 bucks in middle-late position, but dont be tempted to play you T8s or 22s for a raise (altho sometimes it may be profitable). When you have a good hand pre flop, AK, AQ, JJ+, raise a lot. 14-20 seems to be right. You flop a good hand, value bet the **** out of it. You flop nothing, make one continuation bet in a heads up or 3 way pot, if u take it down, fine, if u dont, ur done with the hand. If theres more than 2 other players in the pot, I just check and fold (or possibly call down, depending on situation). The guys will give you their money, you just have to wait to take it.

Just like everyone stated above, the level of play at 1/2NL cash games is pretty horrible, people calling you down with bottom pair. When I first played it wasn't in a casino, it was at my girlfriends house against friends. I had never played, and didn't even know what a blind was. I walked away that night with quite a bit. I knew it was beginners luck, because I really didn't know what I was doing. But I took the time to learn the game, read books, read helpful forums, and now I'am a consistant NL tourney winner. But good job on the cash, and GL playing monthly.
