Hellmuth's Cardplayer Article And Daniel

Recommended Posts

In his most recent cardplayer article, Hellmuth writes:In fact, even as I watched the TOC on television, I picked up things. For example, I took a long look at Negreanu (and rewound the TiVo a time or two) when he made a big bluff, and another long look when he made a big bet with a strong hand. I believe that this will help me in the future when I face him, which I inevitably will.To me, Hellmuth announcing to the world that he has been watching Daniel on Tivo and was supposedly able to pick up some sort of tell and/or pattern is just ridiculous. Is he so arrogant that he thinks that, even if Daniel knows about this, he'll still be able to know when Daniel is bluffing as opposed to when he has strong hand? If you really had a tell on someone, why would you write about it in a cardplayer article?

There's a good chance he's tricked himself into seeing a tell that was really just coincidental in a few cases. If he actually did pick up a generally reliable tell on DN, I agree, he's stupid for announcing it. Daniel can Tivo the same things Phil has, see what Phil sees (or what Phil thinks he is seeing) and use it to confuse him.

The fact that anyone claims they can do that from seeing someone in two different hands, is stupid.
excuse me? i know a 16 year old drop out genius who disagrees.you can't argue with him, he's a genius and he knows more about everything than anyone else ever. you're not invited to the party.

Didn't Negreanu say on HSP2 that people told him he blinked a lot when he was bluffing? I kinda remember that. To be honest, if I was playing against anyone that has a blog or writes an article about how they play, I would always assume they put it out there for a reason.

I wonder what stupid handle he'll use next.

The interesting thing about getting tells from TV poker is that TV poker is edited and you can never be sure that what you're seeing is actually part of the hand represented. At the very least there will be lots removed from what you see and timings (super important in tells) will almost always be off.

My guess is that he's talikng about something that Joe Navarro told him. In his seminar, (and if you pull him aside) Joe reveals tells on almost all the world class players. And yes, Joe did pick up a tell on Daniel. Since then, however, he has met with Daniel and told him about it, so maybe what Phil was watching will not happen anymore.

I spoke to Joe Navarro at length. He basically told me that I was the toughest player out there to get a read on because I have a lot going on all the time and I'm constantly switching back and forth with different things. He said that if people are picking things up on me, it's highly likely that the information is innacurate. He mentioned that my leg shakes a lot when I get excited, but that it doesn't really mean all that much. I watch more tv poker than most of the top players I think, so when it comes to tell reading and such, I don't think anyone is necessarily more prepared than I am.

What would Hellmuth know about poker? He's only won 10 bracelets...Horrible WSOP he had this year too. Total has been.
yeah but did you see his first two hands in the ME? So weak/tight.... ;)Mark

All of this may be true, but you still shouldn't eat Oreos at the table.

Don't forget that Navarro works at the Hellmuth camps. Phil's probably paying him to give you that false sense of security. Would you be surprised if he were?

If he was going that much out of his way to give Daniel a false sense of security, why would he write an article saying he picked up a tell on him?

He wants to appear to have only one tell on Daniel, and disclose it, when he and Navarro have many tells on Daniel. Or not? You took me seriously, huh?

Yeah if nervous ticks and oreo eating are things PH is studying them I doubt he'll be playing against DN anytime soon unless it's very early in the tournament.

Maybe you have RLS.Millions suffer from it. Few know.

most pros go into lock mode when betting large. trying to pick up on tells might get you into more trouble as someone might trick you into calling with a fake tell. I'd rather play my cards, pot odds, and opponents past playing methods over tells.
