I'm surprised though that no one mentioned Legends of the Fall. Oh the rage! Or A River Runs Through It, or Kalifornia as Early Grayce, or The Devil's Own and Spy Game, which were bad movies but displayed some decent versatility. Coupled with what I think is his masterpiece, Mickey O'Neill, this guy is most definitly UNDERrated. After all is said and done, I think his resume will be better than Hanks' but I dont expect him to top Forrest Gump for a single performance, which is easily his masterpiece.
