Overbet Or Pot Size On Flop?

Was it too agressive to overbet the pot to protect my hand? You flop broadway on a suited board. It is impossible for you to improve your own hand. The only way that your hand gets better is if there are 5 hearts out and you make a flush.You're not drawing to anything and you're super vulnerable. Bet the pot and be thrilled that nobody calls.

I think a pot bet of $3.25 gives you the same information as a $5.00 bet so save the $1.75 next time.

These statements seem to be missing a large point here.Basing our bet size purely for "gaining information", as these posts suggest, implies that we are only focused on finding out if Villains have already made a Flush.But this is pessimistic thinking.And there is much more to think about.It is unlikely that anyone has us beat right now.So my goal is to gain value with my strong hand.I never fear I am behind here until someone gives me reason to think so.

We flopped a Straight.And we are ahead of the vast majority of hands out there.And I usually am eager to win some money when my hand is this strong.So I am hoping someone does call along.But on this dangerous board, we are only going to get action from other strong made hands and draws.Strong hands mostly include 2-pair or better.And 2-pair is always a common possibility on broadway flops.If our opponent has one of these hands, what would be the best play against him?It is reasonable for Villain to think we are holding something like AK or AJ.And an overbet from us would simply look like we were protecting our pair from all the draws.There is no reason for him to think we already have Straight or a Flush.So Mr 2-pair Villain would likely think he was ahead and pay off our large value-overbet.On the other hand, if Villain is on a Draw, there is also no reason to make it cheap.Let him chase against the higher bet.Minimizing your bet (to a standard pot size bet) is only useful if we strongly fear our opponent has a made Flush already.And there is simply no reason to fear this.Overbetting the pot maximizes our value against hands that we beat.And if an opponent does not have a good enough hand to call our large flop bet, then he was not going to call a small one either.I think you played this hand just right.--CM

If I had the ace of hearts I would definitely call, if not raise. You know the other person does not have the nuts. Even if they had Q9 of hearts, they are not coming out with a pot-size or over bet IMHO.

Pot sized yes but less likely with an overbet which is the reason I would bet the pot. I want some hands that I can still beat to stay in. If you suck at post flop play then by all means overbet the pot here.

i agree with Ah, that gives me the nut flush draw, nut straight draw, AND the royal draw...no way im folding to pot size bet

So many people fail to consider pot odds. I'd expect to get called by the naked Ah here. People making that call with the one card flush fail to realize that there is NO implied value to their hand. If another heart falls, they get no action and therefore had made a huge mistake calling large bets without the implied odds to do so.
