Protest In Washington Dc November 3-4 For Onling Gambling Rights

Recommended Posts

Without reading the thread, I'll assume that people are already setting up when and where and what type of games are going to happen after the protest. Who's bringing the card tables to Capitol Hill? Who knows how many decks of cards will be required? All this and more...! Inquiring minds need to know.

HI PerryI would be more than happy to extend the protest through the 5th, making it November 3, 4 and 5th. But I need a guarantee of persons that will show for that. I have to get permits from Washington, this all takes an amp amount of time. As I said I would have to go through steps to do this. Anyone that is planning to attend needs to visit the website created just for this, leave the answer as to their plans to attend. The website is http://www.onlinegamblingrights.com It is fairly new, everyone who wants to help with this, please go sign your name to the guest book. I have as you can see from the information on the site, obtained permits for the 3-4. So if you have a number of a mass attendance that could possibly also stay or be there until the 5th, I would be more than glad to seek the permits and get it all taken care of in Washington. You have a great point as to the meaning of that day. But at the same time, without prior knowledge of how many could attend, I can not contact the media for coverage. I need amp time for all of this. Everyone is in dire need to spread the word about this. Some say "what good would this do" the answer to that is this: Stand up for your rights as Americans and your freedom to play on line, bet on line, or whatever you choose to do with your own money within your own homes. If we sit idle to this, then the legislation wins. I can't fight it alone, I need everyone that believes in the rights of America and the constitution to help with the fight we are going to achieve by this protest. It is prior to election day, only three days. And YES it can make a difference.www. = world wide webThank you all for the repliesRegardsD.Richardson
I will do my best to drum up support for extending it. I have been contacting people I know and posting to other forums (like RGP).I wish you success, not just in regards to the new online gaming legislation, but in general regarding the erosion of the very freedoms that make this country great. Suspending Habeus Corpus, warrantless wiretaps, datamining phone calls, torture, etc.Perry

While the current administration has made it clear that they do not listen to protests, it is still important to attend. It will bring media attention to this cause we all believe in. The media can bring pressure on politicians. My question from the original post is - what was Harrah's doing giving a big donation to Sen. Frist? They should be questioned about that. That is another way to change policies - through the corporations who really run this country. Did Harrah's want these problems with on-line poker/gambling to happen? If so (maybe they wanted to stop competition), then they should be boycotted - maybe that would get their attention which would get the attention of policitians to whom they donate.Peace,Opie

shinychicken came up with a good conspiracy theory, here are a few points from the other thread. the links in pt. 5 are dead now :(3. On Monday, a private group makes an offer to buy Harrah's Casino Group. This private group is composed of Texas Pacific and Apollo Management Group, two large equity companies. Harrah's owns 47% of the Las Vegas Strip (Harrah's, Ceaser's, Flamingo, Paris, Bally's and most importanty to us, the Rio ) as well as many casinos around the US. This would be the largest gaming acquisition on the history of the sector. How conveinent is it that this buyout comes as stocks fall and the entire online gambling sector begins to crack. Link to Harrah's Article4. With stock prices falling and the gaming industry going in disarray over the immiment problems with US customers, the sector is prime pickings for mergers and takeovers as owners want to get the bang for their buck. Who better to make some good acquistions to bolster their companies than our own US casino companies like Harrah's for example.... Link to state of the market5. Now with the the buy out on the table of Harrah's, here is the kicker. Sen. Bill Frist is linked to both Texas Pacific and Apollo Management. Frist's family is in the process of selling their company (HCA, a hospital company based in Tennessee {where Frist is a senator} and Texas Pacific was one of the companies thought to be in on the bidding for the buy out (Link.) as well as Apollo (Link).

One thing: I think you have it backward. If you announced you were marching on Washington on Guy Fawkes Day, and made the "V for Vendetta" tie in, you could get some press on CNN before the event, which could mean a turnout 10 times bigger than you can get without national TV coverage in advance of the event. I would recommend contacting media outlets like CNN and telling them about the protest and drumming up attendance via that route. The story is right up their alley. Other outlets like MSNBC (Keith Olbermann), and "The Daily Show" on Comedy Central would love this story too. I think getting press before the event will lead to huge turnout, which will lead to greater coverage and potential results after the event.

:club: Internet Gambling Ban Protestors Headed to Washington D.C. October 27, 2006 - The voices talking so loudly against the Unlawful Internet Gambling Enforcement Act (UIGEA) on forums and blogs across are the internet will be leaving their keyboards on November 3-4 and will be headed to Washington D.C. to protest the latest US prohibition. The purpose of the demonstration will be to gain press coverage from major news organizations such as Fox, MSNBC, and CNN (who have all promised to attend the event) in order to get the message out to the general public before they vote. The message they are trying to get out to voters is that Republicans, led by the soon to be parting Senator Bill Frist, have begun a modern day prohibition by deceitfully attaching the ban to an unrelated piece of legislation on the last day of senate sessions. The fact that they attached the bill to unrelated legislation about Port Security, an issue that was impossible for anyone to vote against, angered other politicians about as much as it angered the 25 million American citizens who participate in online poker. "What could be a greater invasion of privacy than government telling you cannot play Internet poker in your own house?" congresswoman Shelley Berkley said. "This was a breathtaking abuse ... of power." "The ban on Internet gaming was part of the Republican family values agenda. They passed it to pound their chests and talk about how they're protecting America's youth," Berkley said. "You got a bunch of ideologues running Congress. They're not interested in anything that has a modicum of common sense; they're only interested in a very narrow moral position." Berkley insisted that the protest expressing dissent will surely be heard by politicians and other Americans before voting time. Debbie Richardson, the person instrumental in organizing the protest against the ban, has reported to us that over 250 people have confirmed they will be attending and that many singular people said they will be bringing groups along with them. Poker (for chips only) will be played in the streets as part of the protest. There have been rumors that celebrities who support poker may show up, and other speakers are confirmed. "We think we have enough people who confirmed showing up for the event that could fill up the square behind the White House," and that many people, Richardson explained, will get noticed by the press. "The more people show up for the protest the more interest the press will show," Richardson said. She also expects a large number of people to attend who have not confirmed. The demonstators will be meeting at Washington Monument at 9 am on Friday, November 3. They will proceed from there to the White House and will be rallying in the park on Pennsylvania Avenue. Where's the spirit? Where's the guts, huh? "Ooh, we're afraid to go with you Bluto, we might get in trouble." Well just kiss my *** from now on! Not me! I'm not gonna take this. Frist, he's a dead man! DC, dead! Niedermeyer--I wish I could atten this event, it should be a success due to the fact that it is a voice and not a letter, people listen.

23 million people in this country gamble online, and NONE of them should be voting republican. In an electorate of about 100 million, this is rather significant. Protests are a good way to bring attention to government corruption, but voting these a.ssholes out of their cushy little DC offices could actually change something. I'm not a democrat, and to be honest, I think that party is despicable in many ways too. But for f-ck's sake, it's time for a change. Get out and vote democratic this election day. Let's take back our country.
I agree. The dems are just as despicable as the reps. Vote Libertarian. They are against income taxes, against almost all war, and for your liberties. They belive that what you do with your body is your business, unless you hurt someone. 2000 American soldiers and 600,000 Iraqies are dead. And now we are criminals if we decide to send our money somewhere? Enough. It is about time that people realize there is a real party out there that represents all that hope for. Stop voting against the lesser of two evils. Isn't is about time we stop voting for evil anyway? If you want to save yourself and your country, vote Libertarian. To those who say, "they can't win." Well, not if you don't vote for them. Duh. Imagine voting for the dream instead of the nightmare. Oh, and keep your filthy regulations off my poker and my money. Have we become so whipped that we think it automatic that the gov't deserves a piece of everything we have? They fought a tea party over much less.

Bless you and all of your hard work. It's like that old poem goes, if we don't stand up for this right, then there will be no one left to oppose any of our rights. (All right, the poem is a little different, but you get the idea.) Ms. Richardson is right, if we don't start screaming somewhere, then we may as well all lay down and roll over. We didn't scream about an unjust war, we didn't scream that they lied to us, we didn't scream about Abu Graib, or secret prisons, or legalizing torture. We didn't even make a peep about suspending habeas corpus - but then who really needs the right to a lawyer or have actual charges brought against them if they are not guilty right? (we won't discuss the issue of how to tell if they are guilty). But if we don't speak now, then you can kiss all the rest of your rights goodbye. These monsters have been running around unchallenged for too long. Go get em Ms. Richardson.

It's attitudes like this that got us to where we are. For months we were all saying that the bill would never pass and no one should worry. Now the bill has actually passed and we're still saying, "it won't get worse, just sit back and it'll figure itself out."I think if a protest is going to work for anything ever, it's going to work for online poker. This is an issue that I believe many in government don't understand the public support for. The entire point of a protest is to demonstrate that there are many throughout the country who are devoted enough to an issue to travel far and spend their precious time in the cold shouting about it. I think if many in the government took this issue seriously and understood that it meant so much to so many people, then in the future there may actually be a vote on the issue rather than having the government feel comfortable with simply stapling it to the back of some port bill.
We don't see eye to eye on some topics but this is dead on. If nothing else people shoud be angry about how the anti-gambling legislation was put onto the bill. Yes it happens all of the time but it is time for it to go. Regardless of party it just creates issues like this.As far as who voted for it, well you cant blame them because of the bill it was attached to. it would have been political suicide to vote against Port Security. HOWEVER the politicians that chose this route to pass this attchment to the bill may have committed political suicide as well. If you dont make your voice heard then they dont realize the mistake they have made. Your vote is your weapon so use it against those (Frist) who brought this about.
While the current administration has made it clear that they do not listen to protests, it is still important to attend. It will bring media attention to this cause we all believe in. The big problem I have with this planned protest is that Debbie does not seem to be well versed in publicity and media relations. I have seen absolutely no mention of this planned protest in mainstream press. The only mentions I have seen are on gambing websites. Without mainstream press, attendance will be in the dozens, or hundreds at best. This will do little to persuade those in power that there is a grass roots uproar over the actions of the present administration and Congress. In fact, if there ends up being press coverage after the fact of the protest itself, it may be counter productive when politicians see how few people turned out.At this point, less than a week before the protest, there should have already been a media blitz, with daily press releases to the newswires in hopes that local and national papers and TV networks will pick up the story and publicize the protest. Planning a trip to DC from the west coast is not something most people will do on a few days notice, and 99.995% of the American public knows nothing whatsoever about this planned protest.

HI PerryJust for your info, the press is involved with this entire situation. There was a short script of it on CNN, Fox News, and on MSNBC, as well as other media resources. It doesn't matter how many are involved as long as the word is out. If there is someone that is willing to help, take over, or do any more than the hard work I alone have put into this, then my suggestion box is wide open. I started this protest with little help from anyone. However, there will also be another protest later, I will keep the source of this confidential at the present time, but will say I have been ask to help, lead and join that as well. This one was well planned as has been spread, maybe a little more distant than you might think. Regardless, the protest is three days from election, so whatever the impact, I am sure it will be a big one. Maybe if more would stop being so negative, afraid to speak out, and get away from the keyboard and take some action............this would be a much larger success. It takes only one voice to be heard, and I speak very LOUDLY!!!! Thank you for your opinion, but why not spread the word in a positive way........it could lead to something good. :-)

I have been spreading the word in a positive way as well. During my weekly chat on Full Tilt Poker, I closed by mentioning the protest and encouraged people to check out your site. Someone started a thread on TwoPlusTwo after seeing me mention the protest in the chat. However, I am really not sure how effective this "grass roots" method of spreading the word can be.I am totally behind your effort, and will do everything I can to spread the word and encourage people to attend.
