The Social Repurcussions Of Online Poker (very Long)

Recommended Posts

Online poker is a activity that people, for the most part, do entirely on there own. For some people it is a bit of fun, but for others like me, it can take up a huge amount of your time and also be your sole source of income. The majority of people get jobs, where they work with colleagues and very possibly in teams. To get along at work, they must interact successfully within these teams. And if they want to excell in there jobs they will usually have to excell in these social interactions within the work place. When it comes to online poker, you need none of these skills to be a success. For the most part, you will be a one man team. And it is not necessary to have contact with the outside world whatsoever to be a successful online player. The more you stay in your house and play poker all day, the more you can withdraw from society. The more this happens, I have found, the less skillful you can become in interactions with people. Even everyday interactions. I have found that I am getting increasingly worse at talking to everyday people. And my friends who I played cards with for the last three years, well some of them hardly even leave the house. They play cards all night, and sleep for the majority of the day. This furthers there distance form the 'real world', as they are on a completely different time schedule to the vast majority of people.I used to be a very social person, and I still am to some extent. I go out and party a lot. But I can't help but feel slightly seperated from society. Nearly all my friends work a 9 to 5, and the ones who don't never have any money. I am increasingly realising that online poker can be quite isolated. When it comes to social interactions, because I haven't bothered with them for such a long time, I know find myself being crap at them. And the excuse I often find myself using is "whats the point?" I mean, what does it matter. You have little in common with these people, and for the most part, you are more intelligent than them. But these excuses aren't exactly helping the situation.Another problem is with my parents, I've now moved out my house because of the arguments I've had with my parents, who will not accept poker as an occupation. And neither will women, it seems. I have yet to have a positive reaction from a female when telling them that I play online poker for a living. So i tend to just lie, which always ends up in a web of lies. lol. What are other people's opinion's on this?I have lots of friends, but it just so happens that the ones that play poker just want to play poker the whole time and don't want to go out and party and talk to girls. And the ones that want to party all have jobs and will never talk about poker and have no interest in it. So I end up being somewhere inbetween, which im not too crazy about right now.Does anyone else experience any of this stuff? Anyone care to offer some input and/or advice?

find a social hobby, like join a sports team or a pool (snooker) leauge.I am just starting on my little journey into the online world. I would also recommend keeping a work schedule so you know when you can plan to go out with friends.Just my .02 cents

i used to play a lot more online but got sick of it and stopped for the very reasons you descibed. it's solitary and depressing, yet also very stressful. you get no help with big wins or big losses if there's nobody around to share them with (though i believe if you're married or dating it's better to keep your work, such as it is, to yourself if you get upset easily, etc.).that said, if you want to make a living at it, assuming you can find good games, the profitability is much higher than it would be playing live for the very reason that you see more hands on more tables per hour. a good limit technician should therefore be able to make more over shorter periods of time.nowadays i only do it for fun when i'm bored.

:club: In the real world or part of a work force you are a ONE man team. You have responsability, after all, for one person. if you can make a good nice chunk of change playing online-do it. being around and interacting with smart people is like riding a bike and you'll remember how to do it ieven if you stay in your house for weeks at a time. In most business situations, when it is all said and done, you are left with what you brought into it to begin with.

How about you change up your schedule and play online during the day and go out and party at night. That way you can be free when your friends that are 9 to 5 workers do. I'm sure there are plenty of people like you dude. You just gotta find a buddy that likes poker and plays as much as you do. That was you can experience the ups and downs together. PS I can't help you with the part about meeting chicks. I'm not too good at that myself :club:
