Losing It At The Wpt In Niagara

Recommended Posts

I'd take the over on 3.5 hours. If we could actually document it. All I know is if my friends were staking me to my first live tournament ever, and it was a 10k I'd damn sure be playing scared. Giving me much longer than 3.5 hours time to lose.

Great advice guys.I will be happy to provide live updates. I do not believe I can use my blackberry while at the table. Do you know when there are breaks? Every hour?I will be happy to post.My only dilemma now is that I have been called to court (my day job) for Tuesday - the start of the tournament. I may be as much as one hour late for the start. Do these things start right away?I calculated that I would lose 6 blinds based on a two minute average for each hour I miss - which is not so bad (150 chips from my 20,000 chips to start). Is this right? The blinds start at 25/25 for 90 minutes. We will need to adjust the over/under accordingly.I am prepared to put up $5,000 of my winnings to the reply that provides the best advice to me, on the following basis:a) I make it to the final tableB) Daniel replies to this (but I deem him now to be ineligible for the prize money)c) a minimum of 50 persons repliesd) only those guessing the correct over/under (number yet to be determined) qualifyWish me luck guys.

You might get a 15 minute break after each level - every 1 1/2 hours or so.If Phil Hellmuth plays, he'll probably show up an hour after you. You wouldn't want to play too many hands early anyway. You'll probably start with $20k in chips and the blinds will start at $25/$25 or $25/$50. The best advice that I can offer is to read the info at the below link. Print it and take it with you. It's a step by step direction guide to playing a main event tournament. It helped me get 17th out of 381 in a $10k main event:http://www.doylespokerroom.com/poker/poker_tournament.cfm

Wayne, if you live so close to the casino, why don't you have experience playing live ? After playing 10-12 hours a day for 6 months online, the adrenaline rush of playing live had me shaking like a leaf. Please get to the casino NOW and play. Get as much live experience as you can. I'm no trying to be mean, but winning a few freerolls doesn't count for a lot. People play crazy in the first few levels of freerolls......going in every hand. Half the field of most freerolls I've been in go out quickly doing that; I just don't think that a WPT event will play out the same way. There is no way that you can get out of work that day ? I would think the stress of playing your first live tournament would be enough........you don't need the worrying about getting out of work on time, how many hands you are missing, etc.I wish you luck.....What an opportunity !

More advice, Wayne:Relax. Showing up an hour late is no big deal. Be patient. Don't put pressure on yourself to play too many hands in the first 2 to 3 levels. Live play for practice is a great idea. Online is nothing like live and, like someone else said, don't be afraid to ask the dealer questions and don't be concerned that other players will think you're a fish because you ask questions. When you pick up a couple of big hands, everyone will respect your game.

Since you've never played a big live tournament before, I would reccommend showing up on time, if not early. You're going to want some time to get used to the situation, otherwise it could affect your play. By showing up early, mingling with the players, and getting yourself comfortable with the zoo that will be the poker room, you can avoid getting nervous while playing. If you are unable to get out of your work obligation, I have another solution:Give the money to me, and I'll play, js.

First piece of advice is to forget that it's a 10k entry and not a freeroll.Second is not to be intimidated and just play your game whatever that may be...trying new styles would be something to do any other time.Playing some live poker is a very good idea...3/6 limit, low buyin tourney...just so that you get used to being cramped up to a table.Bring a sweater, casinos are cold.

If you havn't already, you should look into reading Harrington on Hold 'em over the weekend. Go to your local bookstore and pick it up, I've been reading it and it has some great advice - You won't be disappointed and you'll get a lot out of it for this event.Between that and playing at the Casino live over the weekend you'll pick up some valuable experience.

The events are not being held on the casino floor (which is usually cold) but in the Grand Hall....and, if you make it to the Final Table, in the Avalon Ballroom. But, it never hurts to bring anything that is going to make you comfortable (layers, layers, layers). Remember, these are DEEP stack tourneys; Day 1's may be very long.
