Possible New Antigaming Bill In Ontario, Canada

Recommended Posts

Dunno if this has been posted, but just on Primetime sports (fan590), McCowan was talking (and bitching at) that a new bill might be introduced next week about Online poker. From what I gathered from it, it would make it illegal for poker shows on tv to be shown if they are sponsored by any play or for real money site (this is 100% of poker shows I would think?). ALso illegal to have poker ads in sports arenas and on clothing.I was confused about the online playing part, dont know if it affects that. But, man, Bob Mccowan is one pissed dude. I guess he loves his online poker!

Wish I had a link to post, but I cant find any. Maybe it'll be in the papers tomorrow.I was really confused on how Bob was talking about it. Im not really sure if it impacts actual online poker playing. But it does impact the showing of poker shows on TV, that I know.

The proposed Bill is a private members bill and those don't usually pass unless the governing party supports them.It only deals with the advertising of online gaming so it won't change how you play but it might take away the average person's ability to watch things like poker on TV.http://www.ontla.on.ca/documents/Bills/38_...ion2/b060_e.htm

I spent an evening at his house last time out and we talked at length about lots of stuff. He actually has a very interesting betting system that he used to use when he lived out in Vegas to play Baccarat. I know, I know, what the??? but, it was an interesting theory

Yeah, in Canada private member bills are our way of letting our politicians have a few minutes of attention granted to their pet causes. We don't let them actually make new law on their personal crusades though.

sometimes these bastards go on massive vote trading campaigns, and sell their support to anyone else's pet project, for a vote for their pet project.good luck Ontario, they will never tame the west.

my guess is that its the same law prohibiting the advertising of tobacco in any form of medium (tv, radio, etc). i don't believe its a proposed ban on online gaming.

2. The Act is amended by adding the following section:Restrictions on advertising of certain Internet websites17.1 No person shall print, publish, distribute, broadcast or telecast an advertisement or representation that includes an Internet gaming business website address unless the person believes in good faith that the Internet gaming business has been licensed or otherwise granted permission to operate in Ontario or Canada by the appropriate authority and is operated in accordance with the applicable laws of Ontario and Canada.Does this mean that online gaming companies can advertise in Ontario provided they are in good business standing with the laws of Ontario?

I dont trust people who have a "system" to beat -EV games simply by using a different playing strategy.Good for him though, I'm glad that worked out for him......O wait...

It is not the most common way for new legislation to be introduced but private members bills do get passed a lot. Don't right this one off to quick.

This is somewhat related...Who else in the US laughed when they showed the Party Poker comercials durring last nights WSOP broadcast....Spend money on advertising a play money site with absolutely no hope of converting these players to real money....I love IRONY!

I heard the show last night too. The reason Bob McCown brought up the proposed bill is because many TV stations / Radio stations/ Magazines (all forms of media nowadays) get a good chunk of change from online gaming sites for advertising. :club: If this bill is made law (not too sure I'm using the proper jargon) then their advertising revenues decrease and they are poised to make less $$$.I'm not sure that Bob personally cares or if his boss asked him to bring it up but that's the gist of it.He had numbers and e-mails of some members of parliament on the show for people to contact and I e-mailed one of them stating I was opposed to the bill.It would be good if someone can find these contacts. (anyone?)
