This May Be Stupid

This may be stupid, but do they determine your location by IP address? or by registered address? couldnt you just rent a canadian PO box, register a new account with that, get 1 of your bills sent to that box, so that you have a statement showing that address?obv. you could forward your mail from that box to a real address. is this impossible????

Impossible, it's IP location. You can get re-directed IP's out of Proxy's but I still think eventually they can catch on to the bounced (out of country) IP's.If you google "Proxy" you'll be able to see how they work.Hackers use this type of proxy IP bounce to deture them from there location. What movie was this used in... I'm trying to think of it... I'm pretty sure they did it in Hackers, and like The Web or something like that.

So the US government subpoenas access records from European companies to determine who's playing there?
No, they can use different types of software to trace where the original IP is coming from.I'm sure they wouldn't even deal with the "Country" Your bouncing Your IP from, they're looking for the original computers IP.It takes a lot of time and money for the Government to "find" these IP's and what's funny is that it's nearly impossible for them to trace all American based IP's.

To rent a PO box in Canada, you need to be a canadian.
The local pakistani guy who runs the Mail boxes Etc in my neighbourhood never checked my residency before renting me a P.O. Box that I needed for a home business I was running. And those P.O boxes have real addresses on them and not P.O Box 3456. When I was moving a lot and didn't want to bother changing my licence every few months I just used my P.O box as my residence address. For almost 2 years I was living in that box as far as the DMV and gov't was concerned. It would be extremely easy for US citizens to get them IMO.

Look to the recording industry to see how they catch people ont he net. Or the child porn busts. It is almost impossible for them to work backwards and find out which American's are playing poker on line. If someone ratted you out then yes they could trace you. But to just canvas...no way. With the recording industry people basically ratted themselves out. They put out there ID with piles of illegal files and a sign saying come and get me. In other instances the recording company put out fake downloads. In the child porn arena the same tactic is used. They need you to go to them and out yourself. If an American chooses to keep playing poker, even if this legislation results in the worst case scenerio, the gov't will not be able to stop them. You will hear of a few high profile arrests at the beginning (just like with downloading) then nothing.

Probably the same guy handing out fake passports to Taliban and putting razor blades in toothpaste tubes. He's in cahoots with Bill Frist I'm pretty sure.

The dumbest thing about this thread is that it is not even applicable at this time. They only passed the law to force out banks and cc companies, we have been dealing with cc companies not doing it for years. This law just makes it harder to get money on and off the sites. In the future we may have bigger problems but for now, just keep playing. At this point it has nothing to do with you playing, your address OR your IP address. It is not illegal for you to play online Poker!!!!Idiots. And when/IF the time comes, they will pass another law to get the ISP's to block all the gambling sites, So AOL, Cox, Time Warner etc. will just block it and it will be over. They will never come after the individual players, just force companies to stop allowing access. So "In the future, after they get the next law passed" go ahead get your Canadian p.o. box, your provider will still not let you get to the site to play.Read the law, before you spew this crap, understand it first, then speak.

That's why if you're bouncing your IP through a proxy you'll be fine no matter what. It would take a lot to trace it.Good analogy using like the "napster" era of piracy. Most people get hit for mass producing and things of that nature. Usually the little library you have on LimeWire isn't going to attract much attention.
Can't they just make the ISP's block gaming access?
It's just to far spread to block. They've been taking horse bets and sports bets forever online. It's just impossible to accomplish without millions of dollars. Or Brazillions.

This is more of a "what if" thread. Understand the concept of a thread before you swep your crap all over it. Then YSSCKYS.
