Death Of The Donkey?

Recommended Posts

This thought isn't very fleshed out in my mind, but it did occur to me;If the U.S. constitutes around 70 - 80 percent of the online player base, a lot of the poorest players must come from that particular base, right? When the bill is signed into law, "casual" (nicest term for bad players) players may just give up playing online due to their lack of effort of finding loopholes. Would that in turn lead to strengthening the overall play of the remaining player base because of less donkeys?Feel free to flame, discuss, and such on my weird and somewhat optimistic tangent I've presented.P.S. Any American poker refugees (is there such a concept?) are welcome to come to Canada. We have lots of room! :club:

I'm not saying that ALL donkeys will disappear, but with better players to play against and more of them, your own skills improve in time due to the environment being more talented as a whole. Raking pots against donkeys are nice and will always be a happy time; but improving your play and being able to elevate your own game also allows you to win more money and makes you less dependent on the donkeys.I'm not saying dead money isn't a good thing, because that's how many bankrolls are started. But, the harder you try to play against fields that are more skill intensive with serious players, the better you get, which should result in the long term, more pots.

So eventually we'll all be about the same skill and playing equally well, in which case we'll just pass money back and forth dependent on the fall of the cards. The only one's who will make any money are the dealers and the house.I don't think you understand how poker works as a whole.

so while i play against better players and therefore, get more experience and better on my own, what is stopping these better players from getting better? how does this improvement make me money in the long run? eventually this just leads to a vast improvement of the skill of those who are long term losers in the poker world

Exactly. You will lose all your money, but at least you're a better poker player than before!!

FYPWith our massively improved poker skills, us online super pros be able to horribly crush the live game players who've been left hopelessly behind.

Addicted, degenerate gamblers will do anything to fulfill their obsession with losing money. Id say though, that there will most likely be less donks... but the addicted ones with gambling problems are probably not going anywhere. But thats just IMHO, which is meaningless, since nobody can accurately say what's going to happen!

+1OP.........What people are trying to say, very meanly, is:Your assumption about what will happen with the loss of the US donkey contingent is what everyone else thinks will happen too. Your conclusion that eliminating many donkeys will help the game is incorrect. Yes, you will be drawn out on less. What you didn't consider is that you will no longer be able to win big pots that were formed by donkeys calling down when they shouldn't and don't hit their lucky river card. We all need that dead money in there. Yes, you will receive some bad beats from bad players, but you will also make a ton of money off them when they don't get lucky.Although those of us from the US who play exclusively on line will be the first to be affected, eventually the trickle down will reach all players. Online players from sensible countries will have less fish to play with. Casinos will have less fish because players can not play a few hands online, decide they are champs, and plan their big trip to Vegas. You need to move beyond the bad beat you just suffered, or the donkey who did not respect your bluff raise, to thinking about the long term prospect of playing with people who are all better than you. That's not a pretty picture for any of us.My (limited) success at poker is not because I'm great and will win a major tourney. I am successful because I recognize what my skills are. I don't play above that level. Currently, I can usually find people worse than me. That could change soon. Playing on fulltilt the last few days, I've seen a lot of people chatting that they have taken all their money off, just playing with their last few bucks. Some have said "Yep, we are all breaking the law." They don't even realize that the legislation targets the financial transactions, not the playing itself, and that it does not take effect for some time yet. Our fishies could start dropping off even before they have to because they don't understand exactly what is happening.

Where is BigD when you need him?
Playing poker live, strangly enough. I've i'm so tired of flaming " you can't beat the bad players" type posts, that I don't think I have the heart for it any more.. I pass the torch.
