jjgoldy5 0 Posted October 2, 2006 Share Posted October 2, 2006 I don't understand the main reasons for banning internet gambling.I got this response from my congressman (who also happens to be the house majority leader) regarding the ban on online gambling.He says in the letter that he wants to regulate internet gambling, and voted for a bill that would allow the federal government to regulate internet gambling.It sounds like they banned it because they couldn't control it.Maybe it is because Osama could open up a 100 million dollar account on Party and just dump to his terrorist friends in the US undetected? While I support the technological growth of the Internet, and have authored legislation to make sure the Internet remains the last bastion of capitalism, we cannot allow the Internet to become a cesspool for illegal activity. Traditional forms of legal gambling are regulated by law and controlled by gaming commissions. The Internet should not be exempt from the same requirements of regulation. Please be aware that two years ago, I voted for the Unlawful Internet Gambling Funding Prohibition Act - a bill to allow federal regulation of internet gambling. Although it passed the house, it ultimately failed in the Senate. With the internet rapidly evolving, applying federal law to this relatively new medium is an increasingly complex endeavor. Please be assured that I will keep your thoughts in mind should internet gambling related bills come before the House floor in the near future. Balloon guy 158 Posted October 2, 2006 Share Posted October 2, 2006 A good assumption, but I think as long as the government gets their piece of the pie, i.e. taxes, they will allow it.Someone else in another thread said that the state's rights issue is important too. I agree with that. If Nebraska votes that they do not want gambling in thier state, then why should a foriegn business get to superceed that's states laws? Link to post Share on other sites

DB10-2 0 Posted October 2, 2006 Share Posted October 2, 2006 in other news, the real reason the republicans did this is because they were probably getting a lot of lobbying pressure from the B&M casino industry--corporations and indian tribes alike. online gambling directly cuts into the B&M industry's action, so the industry seemingly bought enough republicans to shut it down.this isn't about protecting people from losing their money gambling. it's about making sure that the people who lose their money gambling do it in a place and manner such that the casino industry can profit and those profits can be taxed by the US government.obviously, the move also appeals the the religious right as well, but that's a side benefit in my estimation.end of story. However the First and Foremost reason is as jjgoldy said is to ensure that all the $ being gambed in the states online is being taxed and regulated by the US government. They wanna Cash in too! otherwise its an export that they could have otherwise capitalized on. And they will! As long as they can somehow enforce from gambling on internationaly operated online casinos, it won't take long for them to somehow implement their own gaming control and regulations to ensure taxing with either state run or privatly run online casinos operated from the US. If you gamble on the Internet then who knows where the money goes and no matter where it goes the owners of those sites will make sure that not government will be able to tax it and that they will not declare their profits or losses to any government.===========karry Link to post Share on other sites
