A Friend Want's Me To Teach Him Poker

Recommended Posts

This guy I met at work somehow found out I liked poker and asked me if I could teach him how to play, of course I accepted as seeing a good opportunity to make friends with this guy.Well today I tried to teach him Texas hold'em and it kinda failed...everytime I was trying to explain something I ran into other problems like explaining blinds and the button which he found hard to understand. This guy is a super beginner and doesnt even know that ace is the best card :club:.Can anyone give me some advice on how to teach him, for example where's a good place to start?

1-Teach about the deck. 52 cards, 4 suits so, 13 of each suit. ace can be low or high, deuce through king.2-hands- high card, pair, two pair, etc.3- make the best five card hand, two cards in your hand and eventually five cards on the board.4- the play of hands- blinds, calling, betting, folding, checkinggo from there

Call me crazy, but after explaning the "hand strengths" I always explain the blinds/button next...

That's a pretty good order, though I might switch 2 and 3, since it would be confusing to hear "a full house, which is XXYYY, beats a flush, which is 5 cards of the same suit" w/o knowing the object of the game or how you get said 5 cards.

The way that I explain betting, raising etc to beginners is to explain that "the round ends, when everyone has put in the same amount of money, or folded."

When I was a youngster I always used to play my Nintendo, and that's actually where I first learned how to play five card draw and blackjack. I obsessed over this game called Casino Kid (click the name for details and screenshots of the game). Some sites claimed the computer cheated and that it's impossible to beat the game, but I very specifically remember beating it on multiple occasions. But, in this day and age, it's probably better to just research some basic resources online and let him loose on the play money tables at FCP, or stars, or w/e site you like to play on. This way you could join him at a table, or setup a private table, and just work on his game. There's really no need to spend money on the basic poker instruction, as it's all readily available online. If he prefers hard copies of what he's reading, just print stuff out.

Tell him the first rule is when you rake in a pot, you jump out of your seat, do a fist pump (sometimes two) and yell, "TOTAL FACIAL!" at the person you beat. Even if it's online.
