daniel: which tournament pro that gets the least...

Recommended Posts

Question: Which tournament pro, that gets the least/no TV/Media coverage, is the best you've seen or is highly underrated? While i love hearing about those that we have come to know from TV, WSOP, and 2+2 for a while now. I'm interested in which "unknowns" you feel are dangerous out there. Anyone else have any ideas on some? Thanks and best of luck (as long as i'm not in the pot).

John Juanda is THE most underrated tournament player on the planet. He gets little to no tv coverage, but man, his results over the last few years are just plain sick. I'm sure DN would agree wholeheartedly.

juanda has made quite a few televised tables. he is regarded as one of the best in the worldgranded there is no segment of "the nuts" on him, but i think he's doing fine.

I heard about this guy from a small town in the Mojave Desert who's been killing the Wed. and Fri. Bellagio tounraments. The former head of a Vegas sports book has called him "the best natural card player since the kid Unger". Doyle Brunson was quoted, "With a little more discipline, he could get 20+ bracelets."

daniel wrote an article titiled asian poker players that explains they are highly underrated and underpublicised but are some of the best poker players in the world. I think this is very true and think that they will continue to go unnoticed since some can't speak english and most just aren't the type to scream and yell for the cameras......just thought they should get a shout out while they continue to quietly do well in the poker world

Chau Giang doesnt play a whole lot of tourneys.....hes more of a cash game killer. Although, I would agree that he is highly underrated.
Chau did all this in one year.Go ahead, take it back.I won't mind. :-) 23-Feb-05 World Poker Tour Invitational - No Limit Hold'em2005 L.A. From DN's profile of Paul Phillips: "Paul is probably the single most underrated player in the game today. It would be difficult to come up with 12 to 15 names that have had more success in tournament poker than Paul despite the fact that he plays a limited schedule. "He also says that Juanda is "arugably" the most underrated player.

Very interesting....where did you hear about this player??  I'd like to find out more....any links??
He plays under many aliases to keep under the radar. He's also known to watch King of the Hill reruns on his laptop when he plays.

I played some 5/10 no-limit on fulltilt with John Juanda last night. Real nice guy and i think he won every big pot he was involved with. His tourney results speak for themselves if you look it up. Plus I loved when he moved allin in the dark again DN, maybe not wise but I loved.

I find Chau really funny when he's on tv. He was very affable(I love using words from curb your enthusiasm) and has a quick wit, not to mention a big ego(but what good player doesn't have one) and he was funny on GSN WPPA. David Pham was the first name that came to my mind when I read the first post. I think Allen Cunningham is very underrated

I first thought david pham as well, but anyone who reads dn's articles knows about how he almost crept up and stole the player of the year award from him, while dn was worried about juanda......but yeah mainstream i think david pham is the one

Scotty Nguyen ia very underrated!! I've been keeping track of some poker pros before it was popular to even keep track. If you go back to when Card Player first started to have the "Player of the Year" rankings, which was about 6-7 years ago, you would find that Scotty is always in the top 20 for every year. And i believe that 5 out of the 7 years he was in the top 10. Back in 2001 at Commerce, i ran into Scotty in my favarite bar and i talked to him for about 30 miniutes. I told him that i started keeping track of alot of the pros, and i knew his record in tourneys for the past few years. I went on to say that i felt he was ranked 5th in the world at the time behind Tony Ma, T J Cloutier, Men The Master and Phil Hellmuth. ( This was before the Poker Boom and the young guns.)He was impressed with all the stats i knew and he bought me a beer and we talked about poker. He was very nice and before he left, he put down another 20 spot for more beers and i told him thanks but i don't want to talk to you for free beer! And he said that when he was starting out, things were very tough and now that he has made it, he wants to give back. I smiled and thanked him and said before he left," Hey Scotty, I respect and admire you, ................ but if i see you at my table, I'll have to take you out." and he laughed and said "Lets do it Baby!"

Based on tournament results over the past couple years, I'd have to say JC Tran would qualify as one who is relatively unknown and has shown great results. Daniel speaks highly of him as well. He'd likely be one of the favorites to win a big tournament when talking of those who "fly under the radar".
