David Sklansky Going To Win Borgata

Recommended Posts

I swear that's exactly what I did when I saw the thread title! That would actually benefit David immensely. The more post flop play available the worse off he is. His strengths are in his recognition of pre-flop situations where it's correct to go all in. I think he is a good bet to make the final table, but a poor choice to win it all based on his approach to the game. He won't play to "win," he'll play to make money, often meaning sacrificing opportunites to gain chips while waiting for others to get knocked out so he can move up the ladder.
Thanks for taking the time to add your opinion. I only know David's play from what I've seen on TV, but I also had the mindset that he just plays to cash and not to win. When I said 'luck' I just mean getting good hole cards. I don't usually watch WPT events much anymore because it was getting to be all pre-flop play. I like watching slower paced events with people constantly making moves post-flop.

The play right now is to attack Sklansky like a mad man. He definitely wants to make it into the final table even if that means folding into it.In the final table David will also want his "TV time" and won't make any plays early. I'm sure it won't be that hard to Rob him at the FT. It'd be a contest to see who can put in the first raise and steal his blind. lolI recall reading about Sklanky's approach in these televised tournies. He takes alot into consideration. His book sales, how it'd be bad for business if he gets knocked out early ...........blah blah.....In the NBC Heads up match with Phil Ivey that was his approach. Tight in the first few levels cause he didn't want to get knocked out early.Once the blinds were up he was willing to gambe it up and eventually beat both Ivey and Chan. But the field right now isn't as strong and DS has more experience, interesting to see how it plays out.BTW, his new book is pretty good.

No mentions of Barry Greenstein or John Phan in the Top 27? Strange...
I just got back from the Borgata, I spent some time watchin the tourney and had a great time. I was sweating this one table that had Bigler, Tilly, E-Dog and Alan Colon. I think Tilly is a little too reckless to win it all - she would've been out already if she didn't suck out so many times. I saw her put terrible beats on Bigler and one other guy who's name I don't know. Phil Laak was next to me watching his girl so it was pretty cool. I saw a ton of other players at the casino too - JDags, Cong Do, Shannon Elizabeth (hot), Cyndi Violette (hot), Esfandiari, Paul Darden, Ted Forrest and a few more I can't remember. They're all pretty nice and will usually answer quick questions. Has anyone seen Lindgren or D'Agastino recently? I think they weigh a combined 200 pounds. Lindgren looks like he lost a ton of weight.

Robert Wisiak raises to $50,000 preflop and is called by both Ronnie Ebanks and David Sklansky. The flop comes A97 and Wisiak bets $120,000. Ebanks makes the call and Sklansky moves all in for an additional $146,000. Wisiak calls all in and Ebanks folds. Wisiak turns over AK but Sklansky shows 99 for a set. The 7 on the turn and the J on the river do not improve Wisiak and he is eliminated from the tournament.

Daniel is spot on with the analysis on the chances of Sklansky winning it, because its very good for his name and to sell books if he makes the final table. Although if Sklansky does get a big stack, he'll become dangerous because he would just go into a shell and protect those chips ala Dewy Tomko in the 5 Star Bellagio tournament when he just let Paul Phillips and Gus battle it out until he got heads up and just starting going all-in every hand. Someone like Barry or Tilly will obviously take advantage and steal like a mofo from him unless they get out of line and run into a monster. It is a really good final field and it will be interesting to see who takes it down.

I was up there watching it as well, i would watch out for the young guy, mark newhouse, he seems like he was able to pick aggressive spots very very well. Jennifer Tilly seemed a little bored and out of it yesterday, even though she had a huge chip stack.

Jennifer Tilly Eliminated 15th ($52,380)Jennifer Tilly raises to $60,000 preflop and is called Mark Newhouse. The flop comes KJ7 and Tilly bets $95,000. Newhouse makes the call and the turn is the Q. Tilly fires $300,000 and Newhouse moves all in. After several minutes, Tilly makes the call and shows Q7 for two pair. However, Newhouse flips over A10 for the nut straight. The A on the river does not improve Tilly and she is eliminated from the tournament.

This has nothing to do with Tilly or Sklansky but whilst I was railing during Day 1 that Ariel Schneller guy had just an unbelievable cavalcade of chips at one point prompting Antonio seated next to him to comment "So Ariel how does it feel to win the Borgata Poker Open"...I can't believe he bubbled. These kids today just don't know the difference between aggressive and reckless.

Like I said, i sat and talked to Mark for a little bit, he is someone to watch. He will make you bet thinking you have the best hand, and then all of a sudden he is slamming chips into the pot out of nowhere.
The hand against Tilly he called her down and hit a ghutshot though.

i think his MAJOR hand that i saw, that really helped his chip stack was his pocket tens against the AK suited. he got a set on flop, guy got the ace, turn gave him another diamond for four to flush and river was rag.. i think that was a 800k pot. this was the hand were the lady with the arm sleeve tattos raised first if you were watching it.

Sklansky is the short stack with 10 left, unless he gets some cards and gets called, looks like he wont make it. Bind Structure now forces him to move with anything remotely decent
