If he is gonna go with 10 grand Id have to say stick to the low limit cash games at the Aladdin and the Excaliber. sooooooo softEasy to get caught up in the Vegas lifestyle but if he sticks to a plan and doesn't play outside his roll he should be ok.IMO 20/40 is WAY over your roll (3/5 maybe but even at 3/5 you can go on some pretty sick swings)The Aladdin has a sweet afternoon tourney $60.00 buy in $40.00 rebuy (4500 starting chips) with usually about 80 players. And the 100 NL game there is ridiculously fishy. The Orleans has a nice tourney on Friday night and The Excaliber (even though the poker room is basically a dump) is probably the softest low limit cash game in Vegas.Factor in your moving expenses and if you aren't looking to get rich quick your 1st week, $10,000 should be plenty
Running off to join the circus isn't a "plan"
i moved here, not really to take a shot but to get out of florida...got caught up with the vegas lifestyle, got caught up in the pit, got distracted from poker, went on some downswings that were much larger than the upswings, went broke a couple of times, borrowed/begged my way out, hit a few depressions, thought my wife was going to leave me and take the baby quite often....and i'd do it all again in a heartbeat.
Nice.Way to live. Who cares about committment and responsibilities for things like spouses and children?Play poker - it is a dream. A lifestyle. A freeroll that can't miss. That and instant lottery tickets.
don't mean to get too deep here but like the OP I am 425 or so years ago, I took a trip down to San Diego to see my best friend and his sister. we took a trip to Mexico...got drunk and had a great time. His sister Carol was 7 years younger than us...a vibrant young woman. She ran 5 miles every morning...she was a vegetarian, into meditation and took excellent care of her body. Overall she was one of the most vibrant, spiritual people I have ever met. I watched her grow up from a 5 year old girl into a 34 year old woman with a lot on the ball.Well 2 months after my trip to San Diego, my best friend Mike calls me and shellshocked me by saying Carol was diagnosed with leukemia. She was in the advanced stages and that was why he invited me to San Diego for our trip.A week later I flew back to san Diego...Carol was in the City of Hope getting chemotherapy... and Mike and I spent 3 days sleeping on her hospital room floor as she slipped away. She died quietly at the ripe old age of 34.The point of this story is that life is short. Pursue your dreams at all costs. You could get hit by a bus crossing the street...or spend your entire life taking good care of your body, mind and spirit only to get robbed by a terminal disease or other unfortunate twist of fate when you least expect it.(edit) Oh and on a side note, what kind of world do you think we are going to be living in 30 years from now anyway ? At 42 years old I am not even remotely concerned about my 'future' at the rate society is falling apart right before our eyes. I'll take my chances doing something I love to do and not even think twice about it.
This is the sort of "logic" that smokers use to try and explain why they smoke. "Hey, my friend's Grandmother smoked a couple of packs a day and lived to 100"Living life to its fullest isn't the same thing as anarchy and ignoring responsibilities, and having no plan for success. How exactly is "society falling apart"?...if anything it is being affected by people who care for nothing but themselves, having no desire to actually work hard and sacrifice for success.

in fact to celebrate the spirit of this thread, I just went across the street to Abduls Liquor and Deli and loaded upjim20beam20whitebc6.jpgLOL and I have to wake up at 6 AM tommorow to do my Sheriffs Work Project raking leaves on the freeway in my little orange vest :icon_dance:Socrates you are missing the whole point. The notion that being religious about personal health is going to 'extend' your life is ludicrous. My grandmother smoked like a chimney for 50 years and she is still going strong at 95 years old sharp as a tack. eating your vegetables and exercising regularly just because you want to tack on a few years of your life so you can make it to your late 80's or 90's is pointless and sad IMO. Id much rather eat what I wanna eat...do what I wanna do and take life as it comes to me than trying to squeeze every minute out of my life span eating soy burgers and brussel sprouts.case in point >>>Jim Fixx...runner guru...dropped dead of a heart attack at age 40 something...fate is fate man...when your number is up...its up
I am cracking my self up here. I didn't get to this post before I posted my reply above.

Why do you have to move to Vegas? You make more money online than you do live so I don't see the point or the attraction. Could someone elaborate please?

Oh and to all you internet players posting "hey why don't you just play online"..there's dozens of reasons, including THIS ONEBottom line... you win a ton, and they just decide to KEEP the money. (Which, by the way, is why I never play slots or "jackpot" games at Indian casinos as well, read up on how often these jackpots are actually paid out!)And other than a couple "big wins", over the last 3 years I've been a consistant BIG loser online... why? I don't know.. maybe it's the MULTIPLE 2-out bad beats that always seem to pop up. And by multiple, I mean for example on Wednesday of this week... FOUR two-outers beat me for several hundred dollars... this playing only ONE table for less than 3 hours.Given, you see more hands online.. but 3 hours online is like 8 hours in a casino, and I've NEVER EVER had FOUR 2-outers go against me in "real life" before, at least not in that short of a time. I think, though, that my reading skills and the ability just to see the players, are my strong points. I win consistantly offline, but lose consistantly online. Hmmm...I'll stick to real casinos. And since the closest one is 2 hours away, then I guess Vegas is the option!
Honestly what you are saying is BS. How big is your sample size when you are refering to these huge loses? I switched from live to online about 6 months ago and its all the same. You play enough hands it will all even out.

man good luck if you go. I think it is very dependent on the person if you make it or not playing everyday for a living is tough but i think someone with a good frame of mind can do it. My roll right now is 20k and i plan on making my first trip to vegas in early december. But i plan on getting an apartment in Tunica (i only live about 2 hours away) and playing in the 2-5 nl game at the Grand, Horeshoe, and goldstrike. My win rate is very good in those games and believe i can beat these games over an exptended period. I also have other money besides my roll but really believe i can do it. Im 24 now single no kids or anything and no car payment or any real responsibilties. I have a good job working in surgery that i really enjoy. But one the anesthesia guys that i work with hes 59 and been working in anesthesia for 33 years just recently got diagnosed with cancer and only has 6-8 months to live and has a ton of money saved but now wishes he would have had a lot more fun his family and traveled more a really eye opening to me that i need to do what i like to do especially while im young. So im going to give it a shot. See if i can keep beating the games in Tunica for 6 months then see what happens. So i giving it a shot after the first of the year.

If you are going to be a doctor, I think that's better then poker.

Keep your job and play part time. You get benefits and it's reliable income. I'm sure poker is going to become boring when you play everyday for a living.Imagine the stress if you don't win and can't pay your bills.

I really appreciate your advice and concern but ive talked it over with my parents (they are supportive and know my abilitly and hourly rate) and with one of my very good friends that plays poker for a living. Hes no DN but he makes enough to live very comfortably and only plays mid stake games and some mid to high no limit. Hes been helping and watching my play for two years now and has really givin me some confidience to think i can do this. Like I said if its not going well and i dont feel like i can beat the game long term then i will go back to work, it well always be there for me. Im very realistic about the game of poker and the swings in it. I have a little over 20k in my roll right now which is enough for the 2-5 nlh games i play. And i also have about that much in my personel money as well and im not starting until the first of the year so ill have a little more. I have already got an apartment and will pay the six months rent in advance as well as my cable and internet bills up to six months inadvance. So if after six months things arent going well ill reevaluate and see if i need to go back to work or what. The 2-5 game at the Grand is full of tourists and is good for over $80 an hour on the weekends so thats were ill play mostly thursday through sunday.I really do appreciate the advice and concern but Im young enough and I want to give it a shot.

Seems like you have it thought out well. Let us know how you do. I for one would like to know. Go for it. It seems like you have a good plan going and a backup.

  • 2 weeks later...

I was just reading this. Isabelle Mercier's starting bankroll was a whole whopping $10K. If she can do it than so can I. The only thing she's got on me is that she's much purdier. :club: Here's a C&P and the link to where I was reading this.PN: How did you get to the point to leave a very comfortable position and devote yourself to poker only? I had a wonderful job as the manager of the poker room in the ACF in Paris, but after five years, it was time to move on to the next step, and this was playing poker professionally. As soon the game exploded on TV and it became possible to be a professional player with sponsorship, poker was a natural for me. I have played all my life and the game has been my passion forever. So, I quit the ACF management and organised an open-door sales weekend, during which I sold everything I owned. Since that day, I have been living out of my suitcase and travelling the world. There is not one person who did not tell me that I was a complete idiot when I made my mind and decided to live my new poker life with my big bankroll of $10,000. LOL! Oh well, I guess I'm a big believer in myself and in my dreams. With reasons. It was not the first time I made that kind of drastic changes in my life. Indeed, in my previous-previous life, I have been a lawyer for the biggest portfolio manager in North America. I had a wonderful career starting and a great office in downtown Montreal. But what the hell, what I really wanted was to travel the world, and the law firm would only give me 2-3 weeks off per year. Again, at the time, I did not own much, so I sold my car, paid my debts, and moved to Paris with about $50 in my pocket. It's when I turn around and look back at myself that I realize what I have become and how much I have learned.Read the whole article HEREI just realized that this post wasn't complete without a pic of her. So here it is.

Good read. I don't know how she was a lawyer and then went to France with only $50? It's also interesting that she lives in hotels. I wonder if Pokerstars pay for all her accomodations?
