just a quick question...

Ok, I was reading a post just now and I saw that a guy was waiting until he had $600 (300 x bb) before he moved up to 1/2 limit. I've only been to one casino before and when I sat down at the 1/2 no-limit table the max buy-in was $100. Do I really need that much money to play at this limit because I did just fine with only $100 :D

he's talking about his entire bankroll not what he would sit down with for 1 session..if you are thinking for the long haul the landmark figure is 300x the bb...that means you need that much in your bankroll to play that particular limit...not many ppl buy into a table with their full bankroll...

Your bankroll is different than the amount you bring to the table. 300bb is in reference to your BR, not how much you bring to a table. The idea is that with the variance inherent in poker, you want to have enough money stashed so that your downswings don't make you go broke. If you play higher limits, with a smaller (in comparison to the limit) bankroll, one bad downswing (which happens to everyone), you can go broke. Not good.

After going to the casino recently for my first time to play some limit hold'em I found myself in the same boat as vyrusguy. I sat in a $4-$8 game with only $100 (it was the smallest table available) and found that I did well. The question that popped in my head is, are the tables on-line more challenging then the B&M tables? I read about guys stressing over $1 tables and 'tough' competition but my casino table was a breeze. Easy to read and loved to call. I just had to wait for a premium hand, bet like a madman and beat out 4 callers on the river and drag in some monster pots (for the limit - I can picture some of you laughing at me saying monster pot and $4-$8 table in the same post). Didn't take much skill to win. I thought it would be more difficult. Please feel free to share any of your experiences.
